Coolify’s stated minimum is 2 CPU cores, 2 GB of RAM and 10 GB of free disk. That will install and run the platform, but it leaves little room for Docker images, persistent volumes, backups or image builds. For a VPS that will host a real application, start at roughly 2 vCPU, 2 GB RAM and 30–40 GB SSD; choose 4 vCPU, 4 GB RAM and at least 60 GB when the same machine will build several images or run multiple services. Database-backed production workloads generally need 6–8 GB RAM and 80 GB or more of SSD, with additional CPU headroom.

What the official Coolify minimum covers
The official baseline is a resource floor for running Coolify itself, not a promise that every workload will be comfortable. Coolify documents the following minimums:

The documentation also notes that Coolify can start on a very small machine—for example, 1 CPU core, 512 MB RAM and 4 GB disk—but does not recommend that configuration. Where cost is the overriding concern, it suggests beginning with 1 CPU core and 1 GB RAM. Treat those figures as an emergency experiment, not as a dependable server for hosted applications.
Why the practical disk requirement is higher than 10 GB
The 10 GB figure describes free space needed to run Coolify. It does not reserve space for the artifacts that Docker and your applications create. An older Coolify v3 requirements page calls for “30+ GB of storage for the images,” and the macOS Colima setup uses a 30 GB virtual-machine disk. Those figures explain why a 30 GB disk is a sensible practical minimum even for a single small app.

What consumes the disk
- Container images: Every build can leave several layers locally. Different application versions and base images accumulate until old layers are removed.
- Persistent volumes: Databases, uploads, game assets and caches survive container replacement and can grow continuously.
- Backups: Local backup copies use the same disk unless you send them to external storage.
- Logs and temporary build data: A failed build or verbose service can fill a small volume without warning.
Use 30 GB as a floor for a real deployment, not as a target that must be filled. A 40 GB disk gives a small application some operating room. Multiple applications or databases justify 60–80 GB or more, preferably on SSD storage.
How CPU and RAM behave under Coolify
Coolify’s own control plane is usually not the largest consumer of resources. The applications you deploy, their databases and the build process generally determine peak usage.
Builds create temporary spikes
Image builds can briefly use substantially more CPU and memory than the finished container. Compiling source code, installing dependencies and compressing layers can satur a one-core host; Coolify’s v3 documentation specifically describes one CPU as a bottleneck for builds. If builds run on the same VPS as production services, leave headroom rather than sizing only for the idle application.
Running services determine sustained RAM use
A small static site may use little memory after deployment, while a database, search service, queue and several web processes remain resident. Memory pressure can trigger Linux’s out-of-memory killer, interrupting containers even when CPU utilization looks low. Two gigabytes is therefore a reasonable floor, not a universal capacity figure.

Swap is a safety net, not extra RAM
A third-party test reported that Coolify on 1 vCPU and 1 GB RAM worked only with swap enabled. That makes 1 GB an edge case rather than a target. Swap can absorb a short-lived build spike, but it is much slower than RAM and cannot compensate for a server that is permanently undersized. Keep adequate physical memory for normal operation and use swap to reduce the chance of an abrupt crash.
Recommended VPS sizes by workload
The following tiers combine the official floor with practical sizing guidance from deployment guides. Values in the “recommended starting point” column are not official Coolify requirements.

“Dedicated cores” matters for production: a provider’s shared vCPU can be throttled by neighboring tenants during a build. Check whether the plan guarantees CPU time, and measure actual steal time and load after deployment.
Choosing a VPS before you install Coolify
Confirm the architecture
Coolify supports amd64 and arm64. Select arm64 when your operating system is Raspberry Pi OS; otherwise, match the VPS image and your application’s container images. An ARM server is suitable only when every required image and binary supports ARM64 or has a compatible multi-architecture build.

Check disk type and expansion options
Prefer SSD-backed storage for image extraction, database I/O and concurrent builds. Ask whether the provider lets you enlarge the volume without rebuilding the server. A plan that starts at 30 GB but can be expanded is safer than a cheaper, fixed disk that forces a migration when images or backups grow.
Separate application data from disposable layers when possible
Persistent volumes should be included in your capacity calculation. If the provider offers an additional volume, placing database data or user uploads there keeps the operating-system disk from filling with application content. Keep at least several gigabytes unallocated for updates and emergency cleanup.
Budget for backups outside the VPS
Local snapshots are convenient, but they consume the same storage and disappear with the server or disk. Plan an external backup destination for databases and uploaded files. The VPS disk requirement should cover temporary local retention, not your entire backup history.
Installing on a small server: a cautious path
- Start with a supported 64-bit operating system. Verify that the image is amd64 or arm64 as required by your hardware and application images.
- Reserve storage before installation. Allocate at least 30 GB for a practical small deployment, even though the documented free-space minimum is 10 GB.
- Enable monitoring immediately. Record RAM usage, load average, disk consumption and swap activity during an ordinary day and during a build.
- Run one representative build. Build the largest image you expect to deploy. Observe peak memory and CPU rather than relying on idle readings.
- Deploy the database before adding services. A database reveals sustained memory and disk needs earlier than a static application.
- Set a disk alert. Alert well before 100% usage; Docker and databases can fail when only a small amount of free space remains.
- Increase the VPS before symptoms become outages. Resize RAM or CPU during a maintenance window, then repeat the representative build and workload test.
How to tell which resource is limiting you
CPU bottleneck
- Builds take progressively longer or queue behind one another.
- Load average remains above the available vCPU count during builds.
- Interactive services become slow only while an image is compiling.
Add vCPU, preferably guaranteed or dedicated cores, and limit concurrent builds if your platform supports that control.

RAM bottleneck
- The system reports little available memory and swap usage rises during normal service operation.
- Containers restart unexpectedly or the kernel logs out-of-memory events.
- Database cache size leaves no headroom for the operating system and build processes.
Add physical RAM first. Reducing worker counts, build parallelism or database cache can postpone an upgrade, but those are capacity compromises rather than substitutes for memory.

- Docker cannot pull or unpack an image because the filesystem is full.
- Database writes fail, logs stop rotating or deployments fail near completion.
- Disk usage rises after each build instead of returning to a stable level.
Inspect image, volume and log usage, remove only unneeded artifacts, and expand the volume before deleting persistent data. Never prune a volume that contains the only copy of application or database files.

Buying exactly the official minimum
The 2-core, 2 GB, 10 GB baseline is easy to quote but leaves little room for real workloads. A build, database migration or backup can consume the margin immediately. Use it for a learning installation or a service with unusually low demands, not as a default production plan.
Counting only the finished container
Runtime usage is not build usage. Compile-time dependency installation and layer creation can be the largest short-term demand on the host. Test the build that matters, then size for its peak plus the memory your running services require.

Ignoring growth of persistent data
Uploads, database tables and retained backups grow even when application code does not. Set a retention policy, monitor trends and keep an expansion path before the disk reaches capacity.

Assuming ARM compatibility
Supported architecture does not guarantee that every third-party image supports both architectures. Confirm image manifests and native dependencies before choosing an ARM64 VPS, especially for specialized game servers or tools with precompiled binaries.
When should you upgrade?
Upgrade when a measured limit affects user-facing latency, deployment reliability or data safety—not merely because a dashboard shows a brief spike. Sustained swap activity, repeated out-of-memory kills, failed image extraction and build contention are clear signals. Move from the light-use tier to 4 vCPU and 4 GB RAM when you add several services or build on the production host. Move to 6–8 GB RAM and 80 GB or more of SSD when a production database, workers and regular builds share the machine.
Coolify’s published minimums may change. No change to those minimums was identified in the material available for this article as of October 14, 2026, and the live documentation should be checked before ordering a server.
A practical decision rule
- Only testing Coolify: The official minimum can work, provided you accept limited headroom and monitor it.
- One small application: Choose about 2 vCPU, 2 GB RAM and 30–40 GB SSD.
- Several applications or builds: Start around 4 vCPU, 4 GB RAM and 60 GB SSD.
- Production databases and background services: Use about 4 dedicated cores, 6–8 GB RAM and at least 80 GB SSD, then scale from measured usage.
This approach separates the documented installation floor from the capacity needed to operate applications reliably. It also leaves a clear upgrade path when builds, databases, traffic or stored data grow.
