Core Keeper Server Requirements: RAM, CPU and Hosting Explained

Steam’s 8 GB figure is for the Core Keeper Windows client, not its dedicated server. Learn how to plan RAM and CPU, interpret conflicting player defaults, and choose between self-hosting, containers and managed hosting.

There is no developer-published RAM or CPU minimum for a Core Keeper dedicated server. The often-quoted 8 GB figure belongs to the Windows game client on Steam, not to a headless server. For planning, a recent third-party estimate puts a small vanilla server at about 2 GB of RAM, with roughly 3–4 GB for larger or heavily explored worlds and around 6 GB for a busy modded setup. Those figures are estimates, not official requirements or independently verified benchmarks.

Start with the number of players, world activity, mods and whether the machine is also running the game. Leave headroom, then watch real CPU and memory use. Self-hosting gives the most control; rented hosting is easier to keep online. The right choice depends as much on uptime, latency, backups and maintenance as on raw hardware.

What the official requirements actually tell you

Core Keeper’s public Steam listing describes the requirements for running the game client on Windows. Its 2023 listing names 8 GB of RAM as the client minimum. That number should not be copied into a dedicated-server specification: a server process has a different workload, normally runs without rendering, and can be affected by world simulation, player activity and server-side modifications in different ways.

The available dedicated-server references explain installation and configuration but do not publish a developer-tested minimum for server RAM, CPU model or clock speed. Consequently, any hardware number presented as a hard “minimum” is overstating the evidence. Treat the figures below as capacity-planning guidance and validate them on the world and player count you intend to run.

Cable Matters 10Gbps Snagless Cat 6 Ethernet Cable, 25ft, Black
  • High-Performance Connectivity: This Cat 6 ethernet cable is designed for superior performance, with a 24 AWG copper wire core. It provides universal connectivity as an ethernet cord for LAN network components such as PCs, servers, printers, routers, and more, ensuring reliable and fast network connections
  • Advanced Cat6 Technology: Experience Cat6 performance with higher bandwidth at a Cat5e price. This network cable is future-proof, ready for 10-Gigabit Ethernet and backwards compatible with any existing Cat 5 cable network. It meets or exceeds Category 6 performance according to the TIA/EIA 568-C.2 standard
  • Reliable Wired Network Solution: Known variously as a Cat6 network cable, ethernet cable Cat 6, or Cat 6 data/LAN cable, this RJ45 cable offers a more secure and reliable connection than wireless networks. It's ideal for internet connections that demand consistency and security
  • Durable and Secure Design: The connectors of this ethernet cable feature gold-plated contacts and strain-relief boots for enhanced durability. Bare copper conductors not only improve cable performance but also comply with communication cable specifications
  • High-Speed Data Transfer: With up to 550 MHz bandwidth, this ethernet cord is ideal for server applications, cloud computing, video surveillance, and streaming high-definition video. It also supports Power over Ethernet (PoE, PoE+, PoE++) for powering devices like IP cameras, VoIP phones, and wireless access points, ensuring fast and reliable network performance.

A useful distinction is:

  • Client requirement: hardware needed to display and play Core Keeper locally, including graphics resources.
  • Dedicated-server capacity: resources needed to simulate the world, accept connections, save data and run server-side logic for the connected players.
  • Host-machine capacity: total resources after accounting for the operating system, backups, monitoring, other services and, if applicable, the game client running on the same computer.

Only the first category has the widely cited 8 GB figure. The other two need workload-based planning.

Third-party RAM and CPU estimates

ServerScout’s undated planning guide provides a practical starting point. It recommends roughly the following levels, but does not identify an official measurement method. World size, how much of the map players have explored, concurrent activity, mods and contention from other applications can move actual usage above or below these values.

Workload ServerScout RAM estimate CPU guidance from the same guide How to use the figure
1–4 players, small vanilla group About 2 GB Two fast cores Reasonable starting allocation for a lightly populated world; keep additional headroom for the operating system and bursts.
Five to six players, or a more developed world About 3 GB Fast per-core performance remains important Useful when construction, storage and exploration have increased the world’s activity.
Seven to ten players About 4 GB Three to four faster cores are suggested for heavier scenarios Plan for simultaneous activity rather than an empty server at startup.
Busy modded setup About 6 GB Three to four fast cores as a planning point Mods can change memory and CPU behavior; measure the actual pack you run.

These are third-party planning estimates, not official Core Keeper specifications and not independent benchmark results. They should help you choose an initial allocation, not guarantee a player count. A machine with more RAM can still perform poorly if its CPU is busy, while a fast CPU with too little free memory can force swapping and create pauses.

Why CPU speed can matter more than core count

ServerScout’s guidance favors a few fast cores instead of treating total core count as the deciding specification. Simulation work often depends on per-core performance, especially as several players explore, build and trigger world activity at once. Two modern, responsive cores may be a better starting point for a small group than many slower cores. For larger or busier scenarios, three or four faster cores provide more room for concurrent work.

Do not turn that advice into a clock-speed minimum. No official frequency threshold is established. CPU generation, sustained power limits, background tasks and virtualization can all affect results. A server that feels fine with four players may show delays when ten players enter different areas simultaneously.

Why RAM usage changes over time

Memory demand is not fixed at the moment the process starts. A newly created world may use less than a long-running save containing extensive exploration and construction. Multiple players loading different areas, server-side mods and other services on the same machine can increase the working set. Leave spare memory rather than assigning every available gigabyte to the server; the operating system and backup or monitoring tools still need room.

How to size a server for your group

Use a workload-first process instead of selecting a number from a generic hosting advert.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Count concurrent players. Size for the number online at the same time, not the total number of people who own the world. If your group normally has four players but occasionally reaches eight, plan for the larger session or accept that you may need to resize.
  2. Describe the world’s activity. A fresh vanilla save is a lighter starting point than a heavily explored, highly built world. Note whether players routinely split up and load separate areas.
  3. List mods and server-side tools. Treat a modded setup as a separate workload. The approximately 6 GB estimate is for a busy modded scenario, not a promise that every mod pack fits comfortably within that amount.
  4. Add host overhead. Reserve memory and CPU for the operating system, updates, backups and any other services. If the host also runs the game client, include that client’s requirements separately.
  5. Observe the live server. Check memory consumption, CPU utilization, swap activity, tick or simulation responsiveness and connection symptoms during the busiest normal session. Increase resources when usage approaches the machine’s practical limit or players notice delays.
  6. Record changes. Keep a note of player count, mods and world milestones when performance changes. This makes it easier to identify whether a problem followed a new mod, a larger explored area or a host-machine task.

This approach is safer than assuming that a single RAM number applies to every world. It also lets you avoid paying for capacity your group never uses.

Player limits and connection settings

Player capacity is controlled by software settings as well as hardware. The Core Keeper Codex reference for package version 1.2.1.5, verified on September 7, 2026, lists a default maximum of eight players and warns that raising the limit may require more resources or destabilize a session.

A separate community Docker configuration lists a default MAX_PLAYERS value of 10. That difference demonstrates why there is no universal number to copy between installations. Check the configuration files shipped with your installed package or container image, confirm the current default, and test any higher limit with your own world.

Changing the cap does not create additional CPU or RAM. If you raise it, allow for more simultaneous movement, world loading, saves and mod activity. A limit that works on an empty test world may not be stable after extensive exploration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Relay connections versus direct IP

The Codex reference says that configuring a server port enables direct IP connections and that the port must be open for those connections. Without that setting, the server uses Steam relay and does not accept direct IP connections. The same reference describes the port setting as effectively enabling cross-play, but platform support can change between releases; verify current release notes if cross-platform access is a deciding factor.

  • The unique flat cable shape allows for a cleaner and safer installation. You can easily and seamlessly make the cable run along walls, follow edges & corners or even make it completely invisible by sliding it under a carpet.

Port forwarding also increases the importance of router and firewall configuration. Expose only the required port, use a strong server access code, and avoid publishing connection details more broadly than necessary. Back up the world before sharing a game code publicly, as recommended by the community setup guide.

Three ways to host the dedicated server

Self-host on a PC or home server

Self-hosting is appropriate when someone in the group can maintain the machine and network. The community setup guide documents installing the dedicated server through Steam or SteamCMD, leaving the server process running, and locating its world and configuration files. The worlds folder may not appear until the server has created its first save.

Before inviting players:

  • Install the dedicated-server package separately from the graphical game client.
  • Start it once so the initial configuration and save directories are created.
  • Set the player limit and connection options in the installed configuration.
  • Confirm where the world files are stored and make a restorable backup.
  • Decide whether players will connect through Steam relay or through a configured, open port.
  • Keep the host powered and connected for the sessions you promise to support.

The advantages are direct access to files, logs and hardware and no recurring rental bill. The trade-offs are electricity, home-network availability, updates, backups, firewall work and downtime whenever the host computer is off or being repaired.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use community container tooling

Container deployment can make repeatable installation and updates easier for operators who already use Docker. The escapingnetwork community project documents deployment variables and lists image variants for ARM devices including Raspberry Pi 3, Raspberry Pi 4, Raspberry Pi 5 and M-series Mac systems.

Image support is not a performance guarantee. It shows that the software can be packaged for those architectures; it does not establish that every listed device can serve every player count, mod set or world smoothly. Treat a small ARM board as an experiment: measure CPU, memory, storage and network behavior with your actual save before inviting a full group.

Rent managed game hosting

A managed server can keep the world online when the usual host’s PC is off and shifts much of the operating-system maintenance to the provider. It is useful for groups spread across time zones or for operators who do not want to manage port forwarding and updates.

Latency, networking and uptime

Hardware is only part of the experience. The specialist hosting guide recommends a central location with low latency to the group and a wired network connection. That is general hosting advice, not a measured Core Keeper comparison, but it is a sensible baseline: choose a machine geographically close to most players and avoid relying on an unstable wireless link when a wired connection is available.

For self-hosting, ask who needs the world to be available and when. A host that runs only during one player’s evening may be adequate for a casual group but unsuitable for asynchronous play. Managed hosting usually improves availability because the world is independent of a player’s personal computer, while self-hosting can be perfectly reliable if the machine, power and network are already dependable.

  • The world disappears after a crash: stop making changes, preserve the current files and restore the most recent known-good backup.

Backups, updates and recovery

World data is the irreplaceable part of a server. The community setup guide emphasizes backing up world files, and that advice applies whether the process runs directly on a PC, inside a container or with a host provider.

  1. Stop the server cleanly before copying a live world whenever possible.
  2. Keep multiple dated backup generations rather than overwriting one copy.
  3. Store at least one copy outside the server’s main disk or container volume.
  4. Test that a backup can actually be restored before you need it.
  5. Back up before changing mods, raising the player limit or applying a server update.

Version changes can alter defaults and compatibility. Record the installed package version and recheck the configuration after updates, especially for player limits, port behavior and mod support.

Common questions about Core Keeper server hardware

Can I use 8 GB of RAM?

Eight gigabytes may be enough for many small installations, but it is not an official dedicated-server requirement or guarantee. Steam’s 8 GB figure is the Windows client minimum. Whether an 8 GB host is comfortable depends on the server workload and what else runs on the machine.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need a gaming CPU?

No specific gaming CPU model is established as a requirement. Third-party guidance favors fast per-core performance, beginning around two cores for a small group and three to four for heavier scenarios. Use monitoring and player experience to validate the hardware.

Can a Raspberry Pi run the server?

A community Docker project provides ARM image variants for Raspberry Pi 3, 4 and 5, but that documents software packaging rather than performance. Test the exact board, storage, world and player count you intend to use; do not assume that image availability means a smooth ten-player or modded server.

How many players can a server hold?

The Codex reference for version 1.2.1.5 lists eight as the default maximum and warns that higher values can need more resources or destabilize play. A community Docker configuration uses a default of 10. Your installed package and configuration determine the effective value.

Is renting always better than self-hosting?

No. Renting buys convenience and independent uptime, while self-hosting offers control and may cost less when suitable hardware and a reliable connection already exist. Compare actual resource allocation, region, backups, maintenance and recovery controls rather than choosing on price alone.
