coreaudiotoolbox.dll errors usually mean an Apple audio component is missing, damaged, blocked, or in a location that the calling application no longer searches. The message may say:
The program can’t start because coreaudiotoolbox.dll is missing from your computer.

You may also see “The specified module could not be found,” “The code execution cannot proceed,” or an OBS log stating that the CoreAudio AAC encoder could not be loaded.
Which fix applies to you
Use this list before changing anything:
- iTunes, Apple media software, or an Apple-related utility fails: repair or reinstall the Apple application first.
- OBS Studio, qaac, MeGUI, foobar2000 tools, or another encoder reports the error: update or reinstall that application, then install the matching Apple dependency it documents.
- The failure began after removing or updating iTunes: check whether Apple Application Support was also removed or replaced.
- The DLL exists but still will not load: investigate 32-bit versus 64-bit compatibility and missing dependencies.
- Windows Security quarantined the file: verify its source and publisher before restoring anything.
- The error affects several unrelated programs: check Windows components with DISM and SFC.
- A game or launcher reports the file: use its Verify or Repair files feature before attempting system repairs.
- You are considering a DLL download site or
System32copy: do not do that. A random replacement can be malicious, incompatible, or unable to fix the missing dependency that caused the error.
What coreaudiotoolbox.dll is

It is an application file, not a Windows system component. It does not normally belong in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.
Older desktop iTunes installations commonly supplied the file through Apple Application Support, often in one of these locations:
C:Program FilesCommon FilesAppleApple Application Support
C:Program Files (x86)Common FilesAppleApple Application Support
Other iTunes releases placed Apple libraries beside iTunes.exe. Microsoft Store installations use a protected WindowsApps location. Therefore, the correct location depends on the Apple package and the program that is trying to load it.
The file may be requested by iTunes-related software, OBS Studio’s optional CoreAudio encoder, qaac, MeGUI, foobar2000 encoder tools, or another media application. That does not mean every copy of iTunes installs the same file or that every version supports the same external program.
Fix 1: Repair the application that reports the error
The safest first repair is a complete repair or reinstall of the program that displays the message.
If iTunes or Apple software is failing
- Save your work and restart Windows.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps and then Installed apps.
- Search for iTunes or the Apple application named in the error.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
If Repair is unavailable or does not help:
- Return to Installed apps.
- Select the Apple application.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Install iTunes again using the supported Microsoft Store package or Apple’s official Windows installer.
- Restart once more before testing the dependent program.
Apple’s current Windows guidance directs users to update Apple applications through the Microsoft Store. Older desktop Apple installations may provide Apple Software Update in the Start menu. Open it, install the available Apple updates, restart Windows, and test again.
If iTunes reports that Apple Application Support was not found, reinstall the complete supported iTunes package rather than downloading coreaudiotoolbox.dll separately.

- PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
- WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
- TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
- SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
If OBS, qaac, MeGUI, or another encoder is failing
Repair the application that is making the request:
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select the media application.
- Choose Advanced options > Repair, when available.
- If repair is unavailable, uninstall the application.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the current version from the application’s official source.
- Read that application’s dependency instructions before installing Apple software.
OBS may continue to work while logging that its optional CoreAudio AAC encoder is unavailable. That is different from OBS itself failing to start. If only the encoder is missing, reinstalling OBS and restoring the Apple dependency may be sufficient; there is no reason to replace Windows system files.
Older tools may expect Apple Application Support, while newer packages may look beside iTunes or use a Store-managed location. Updating the tool is important because an outdated hard-coded search path can cause a missing-DLL message even when Apple software is installed correctly.
If a game or launcher reports it
Do not copy an Apple DLL into the game directory unless the game’s publisher specifically instructs you to do so.
- Open the game launcher.
- Find the game in your library.
- Open its settings or three-dot menu.
- Select Verify, Repair, or Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the process to finish.
- Restart the launcher and test the game.
A launcher verification process restores files from the game’s own package and avoids mixing an Apple library with an unrelated application.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFix 2: Check whether the file is present but cannot load
A message saying “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean coreaudiotoolbox.dll itself is absent. Windows may be unable to find a dependency that the DLL needs.
First, search only the folders belonging to the application and Apple installation:
- Open File Explorer.
- Check the folder containing the failing program.
- Check the historical Apple Application Support folders:
C:Program FilesCommon FilesAppleApple Application Support
C:Program Files (x86)Common FilesAppleApple Application Support
- Do not move or rename any copy you find.
- Right-click the file, choose Properties, and inspect the Digital Signatures tab.
- Treat an Apple Inc. signature as useful provenance evidence, not as proof that the file is compatible with every application.
If the file is present, reinstall the complete owning application anyway. A missing dependency, damaged installation, or incompatible search path requires more than replacing one file.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix 3: Match 32-bit and 64-bit components
Architecture mismatch is a frequent cause when a media tool and iTunes came from different installation generations.
- A 32-bit application needs compatible 32-bit libraries.
- A 64-bit application needs compatible 64-bit libraries.
- Installing 64-bit iTunes does not automatically satisfy every 32-bit encoder.
- Installing a 32-bit DLL into a 64-bit application directory will not make it compatible.
To identify the failing application’s architecture, check its documentation or installation package. Some programs show the architecture in Help > About. You can also inspect the program’s installation folder and its release information, but do not infer compatibility solely from the name of the DLL.
Apple provides separate 32-bit and 64-bit iTunes choices for supported Windows systems. Use the package that matches both Windows and the application requesting CoreAudio. If the program is old and only supports 32-bit libraries, replacing it with a 64-bit Apple package may not solve the problem.
If you previously installed both Microsoft Store and desktop Apple software, multiple package locations may remain. Remove or repair the Apple installation that the failing application actually uses, then install one supported channel rather than copying files between installations.

Fix 4: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can remove or quarantine a file after an update or application change. Do not assume that every detection is a false positive.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review entries mentioning the Apple application or
coreaudiotoolbox.dll. - Check the detected file’s path and publisher.
- Restore it only if it came from a verified official Apple installation and you understand why Windows Security removed it.
- If the source is uncertain, leave it quarantined.
- Reinstall the complete Apple or media application from its official source instead.
Microsoft warns that restoring a quarantined item can expose the device. If reinstalling the application restores the file without another detection, run a full Windows Security scan before using the program.

Fix 5: Repair Windows components only when Windows itself is damaged
coreaudiotoolbox.dll is a third-party Apple file, so Windows repair commands do not normally restore it. Use DISM and SFC when Windows has broader corruption, built-in applications are failing, or several unrelated system files report errors.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the original application again.
Do not close the Command Prompt while either scan is running. If SFC reports that it repaired files, restart and retest. If it reports that it could not repair some files, repeat the Apple or application reinstall rather than searching for a replacement DLL.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →When manually repeating SFC and DISM becomes difficult to interpret, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what it found; its repair functions require the full version, and reinstalling the Apple application remains the definitive fix for this specific DLL.
Fix 6: Update drivers only when the symptoms point to a driver
A graphics, sound, or chipset driver does not normally supply coreaudiotoolbox.dll. Driver work is appropriate when the same incident includes audio-device failures, crashes, or a recent driver installation.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the affected audio device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
For a recent driver change:
- Open the device’s Properties.
- Select the Driver tab.
- Choose Roll Back Driver, if available.
- Restart and test the application.
Do not uninstall a functioning audio driver merely because an Apple DLL is missing. If several devices need attention, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers; the free scan identifies issues, while driver installation through the full version is optional.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 7: Use System Restore after a recent system change
If the error began immediately after uninstalling software, installing an update, or changing system components, System Restore may reverse that change.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the failure began.
- Select Scan for affected programs to review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore affects system settings and installed programs but does not normally remove personal files. It may not restore a third-party Apple DLL, so reinstall the affected application afterward if the error remains.
Why regsvr32 does not fix this file
regsvr32 is a registration utility for DLLs that expose the DllRegisterServer entry point. It is not a general-purpose missing-DLL repair command.
Running a command such as this is therefore usually irrelevant:

regsvr32 coreaudiotoolbox.dll
If Windows reports that DllRegisterServer was not found, that confirms the file is not intended to be repaired through COM registration. CoreAudio libraries are normally loaded by an application using a filename, not registered as ActiveX or COM components.
Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
Do not download coreaudiotoolbox.dll from a DLL archive, forum attachment, file-sharing page, or search result.
A downloaded replacement may:
- contain malware or unwanted software;
- have the wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture;
- belong to a different Apple release;
- lack required dependent files;
- create version conflicts;
- conceal the fact that iTunes or the calling application is damaged.
Putting it in System32, SysWOW64, or an application folder can also create DLL hijacking and maintenance problems. The safe sources are the official Apple or Microsoft Store installer for the affected Apple application, and the official installer or repair function for the media program that requests the file.
Prevention
- Keep iTunes, Apple software, OBS, and encoder tools updated through their supported channels.
- Avoid mixing desktop and Microsoft Store Apple installations without a specific reason.
- Keep 32-bit applications paired with compatible dependencies.
- Do not delete Apple Application Support folders manually.
- Check Windows Security Protection history before restoring quarantined files.
- Use an application’s Verify or Repair feature before copying files.
- Keep a restore point before major application changes.
- If an older encoder continues searching an obsolete location after a clean reinstall, replace or update that encoder rather than altering Windows system directories.
FAQ
Is coreaudiotoolbox.dll part of Windows?
No. It is an Apple CoreAudio application component, not a normal Windows system DLL.
Does every iTunes installation include it?
No. Packaging changed between desktop and Microsoft Store releases. Some versions used Apple Application Support, while others placed related libraries beside iTunes.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Is it supplied by Apple Music?
It is associated with Apple’s media technology, but the exact installed files depend on the Apple package and application involved. Repair the program that reports the error instead of assuming a standalone Apple Music installation will provide it.
Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Not unless the error separately names one of those runtimes. Those packages do not normally restore an Apple CoreAudio DLL.
Why does OBS mention the file when OBS still opens?
OBS can log that its optional Apple CoreAudio encoder is unavailable while the rest of OBS continues working. Reinstall or update OBS and its documented Apple dependency.
Can I copy the file from another computer?
It is not recommended. The other computer may use a different Apple release, architecture, dependency set, or installation channel. Reinstall the complete official package instead.
