Corpse Keeper is a single-player action RPG with roguelite and strategy elements, built around a three-corpse squad that must fight through a grim medieval world before its bodies decay. Its defining trade-off is that every exploration increases a warrior’s decay, so building a team and deciding when to replace its members matter as much as winning individual battles.
What is Corpse Keeper?
Developed by Melancholia Studio and published by Thermite Games, Corpse Keeper launched out of Early Access on May 28, 2024. It first entered Early Access on February 14, 2023, according to the Steam store listing and the game’s official Steam news archive.
You explore a dark medieval setting with three corpses, collecting resources and equipment while fighting toward a demon in a cathedral. The store describes dozens of playable characters and seven distinct areas. Combat involves sword attacks and active skills, with parrying, dodging, and rolling available to answer enemy attacks.
How does the corpse decay system work?
Decay makes the roster a limited resource, not a permanent party. Each exploration increases a corpse’s decay, and the increase is irreversible; a warrior collapses at 100%. Preservatives can reduce the amount of decay added, but the store does not describe them as restoring a corpse’s previous condition.

As warriors are lost, you can create replacement corpses from flesh and bones gathered from defeated enemies. That means a run involves adapting the squad rather than simply protecting one fixed set of characters. Resource collection, equipment, and the choice of who goes on an exploration all feed into the same plan: make progress while managing how much useful life remains in each body.
What should you expect from combat and difficulty?
The game combines action timing with run-level preparation. In a fight, parrying, dodging, and rolling are specifically identified as ways to respond to attacks; between fights, resources and equipment support the squad’s continued progress. The store calls Corpse Keeper “very challenging,” so it is aimed at players comfortable with demanding combat and setbacks rather than a low-pressure action adventure.

The central tension is cumulative: even a successful expedition advances decay. Replacing a fallen warrior is possible, but it requires materials and changes the makeup of the team. Players who enjoy balancing immediate combat decisions against longer-term roster and resource management are likely to find that pressure central to the appeal.
Is Corpse Keeper on Steam Deck?
Yes. The official version 1.0 announcement says Corpse Keeper became playable on Steam Deck. The documented listing is for Steam; the available official sources do not establish a release on other consoles.

The developers’ Steam content notice warns of “Frequent Violence or Gore, General Mature Content.” The grim setting and violence are worth considering when deciding whether the game is suitable for you or for someone else.

Who is Corpse Keeper for?

- Think twice if: you dislike persistent character loss, decay-based time pressure, very challenging games, or frequent gore and violence.
