There is no universal cost winner. A used ThinkPad may cost less if you already own it, its measured power draw is low, and electricity is inexpensive; a cloud VM may be cheaper or more practical under a different workload and provider quote. Compare the same 12-month period using your laptop’s measured watts, local electricity rate, full VM bill, and the time you will spend monitoring and recovering the stream.
What a fair comparison includes
For a 24/7 broadcast, compare the same period and the same streaming workload. The 12-month period below is an editorial example, not a sourced cost benchmark. No independently published statistic establishes a typical monthly cost for running this stream on a used ThinkPad versus a VM.
| Option | Include in the cost |
|---|---|
| Used ThinkPad | Purchase price allocated across the ownership period; measured average running power converted to kWh and multiplied by your electricity rate; any incremental internet or cooling cost; and any repair or replacement allowance you choose to include. |
| Cloud VM | Instance charges for the full running time, storage, network egress or data transfer, public IP charges, and any other selected services or fees. |
| Either option | Setup and maintenance time, monitoring, and the effort required to recover from a failed stream. |
There is no verified model-specific ThinkPad power measurement or universal electricity tariff in the available evidence. Likewise, a VM quote depends on its provider, region, operating system, instance type, sustained compute needs, storage, and transfer billing. Treat reliability as a factor to assess for your own setup: no comparative reliability test establishes that one option fails less often.
Calculate the ThinkPad’s running cost
Measure the laptop during the actual workload
Measure average wall-power draw while the ThinkPad runs the software, encoder settings, audio, and video you intend to use. Do not substitute a model’s advertised power adapter rating for measured consumption: the adapter rating is not a measurement of the laptop’s average draw. A plug-in power meter can give you a workload-specific reading. If the stream uses different workloads over time, measure a representative period rather than relying on an idle reading.

Convert watts into electricity cost
Use this calculation:
Monthly electricity cost = average watts ÷ 1,000 × 24 × 30 × local price per kWh
The 30-day month is a convenient estimate; use the actual number of days for a more exact billing period. For a full year, replace 30 with 365. Keep the tariff in your local currency and use the rate that applies to your household, including relevant per-kWh charges if you want the estimate to reflect your bill.
Then allocate the laptop’s purchase price across the period you expect to own it:

This is an accounting assumption, not a claim about how long a used ThinkPad will last. Add incremental internet, cooling, or repairs only if they apply to your setup and you can estimate them; no universal allowance or hardware lifetime is established here.
Build the VM’s full monthly estimate
Do not compare a laptop’s complete cost with a VM’s headline compute price alone. A general-purpose VM runs software you configure, and its provider may bill separately for compute, storage, data transfer, IP allocation, and other selected services.

- Choose the provider and region. Prices and applicable charges depend on the region. Use the region where you would actually run the workload.
- Select the operating system and instance type. Choose an instance you expect to sustain the intended encoder workload; do not assume an unspecified VM can encode a particular resolution or frame rate.
- Set utilization to continuous operation. A 24/7 stream means estimating the instance running for the full comparison period, not occasional use.
- Add storage and transfer. Enter the space needed for software and media, plus expected outbound data. Include any public IP or other options you select.
- Review the total and its assumptions. Record the provider, region, instance, operating system, storage, transfer, and options so you can compare it with another quote or revise it later.
AWS says On-Demand instances are billed for instance time and documents other potential cost areas, including data transfer and EBS. Its calculator documentation identifies region, operating system, instance type, utilization, storage, transfer, and Elastic IP options as estimate inputs. See AWS EC2 On-Demand pricing and AWS estimate inputs. These are cost-model references, not a quote for your specific stream.
Define a YouTube workload before comparing hardware
Costs are meaningful only if both options are expected to run the same stream. YouTube’s encoder settings recommend H.264 ingestion bitrates of 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 3 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps. YouTube also recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate encoding, and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds.
These are YouTube’s recommended stream-input settings, not proof that a particular used ThinkPad or VM can encode them. Test the intended resolution, frame rate, audio, and representative motion on the actual hardware. YouTube advises testing representative content and monitoring stream health.

YouTube’s encoder setup guide describes streaming with software encoders on computers and with hardware encoders. It says first-time live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours, and streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That guidance does not establish whether an individual channel can or should keep one stream open indefinitely. Plan the broadcast around your channel’s needs rather than assuming a single stream can remain open forever.

Once you have a full VM monthly estimate and a ThinkPad purchase price, measured draw, and tariff, you can solve for the electricity rate at which the two scenarios cost the same.
Break-even electricity rate per kWh = (VM monthly bill − monthly ThinkPad purchase allocation − other included ThinkPad costs) ÷ (ThinkPad average watts ÷ 1,000 × hours in the month)

Use the same period in every term. For a 30-day month, hours are 720; for an actual calendar month, use its actual hours. If the numerator is negative, the ThinkPad’s allocated purchase and other included costs already exceed the VM bill before electricity is counted. You can also solve for the break-even VM bill by adding the ThinkPad’s allocated purchase cost, electricity, and other included costs.
This comparison does not account for a different value of your time or quantify the chance of an outage. Add monitoring and recovery effort as a separate operational cost if it matters to your decision, and state how you value that time rather than treating it as free by default.
Choose based on cost and operating responsibility
- A used ThinkPad is more attractive if you already have suitable hardware, its measured power draw and electricity tariff produce a low running cost, and you are comfortable keeping it powered, connected, monitored, and ready to recover from interruptions.
- A VM is more attractive if its complete provider quote is competitive for your region and workload and you are comfortable configuring and maintaining the software. Compute price alone is not enough to make that case.
- Neither estimate settles stream quality or reliability. Validate encoding capacity, upload stability, and your recovery process in the setup you actually plan to use.
Keep managed cloud streaming separate from VM pricing
A managed streaming service is a different option from renting a general-purpose VM. For example, Google Cloud’s Live Stream API pricing describes a managed encoding service billed by active channel duration and input/output resolution. Its pricing model should not be treated as if it were a VM compute quote. Specialist cloud playout services may also package more than raw compute.
StreamNeo is a separate managed option for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos; it is not a general-purpose VM, and its product claims are not an independent comparison of ThinkPad and VM costs. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; the cloud loops the videos without requiring your computer or home connection to stay on. Each slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB of storage per slot pooled across active slots, playlists and 24/7 looping, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and StreamNeo team support. Uploaded video is streamed as provided, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot with no re-encode or quality tiers.
