Those are figures from her personal account, relayed by Attack of the Fanboy in 2026—not independently verified pay rates or a promise of what Costco workers generally earn.
What Joce says she earned
The reported figures show a substantial change over seven years, but they describe one worker’s account rather than a typical Costco wage progression.
| When or circumstance | Reported hourly pay | What the figure represents |
|---|---|---|
| 2018 | $14.00 | Joce’s reported starting wage, as relayed by Attack of the Fanboy in 2026; not independently verified. |
| 2019 | $15.00 | Her reported wage for that year, as relayed by Attack of the Fanboy in 2026; not independently verified. |
| 2025, ordinary rate | $37.90 | Her reported rate after moving into optical work; the article describes it as including a premium above a $31.90 base. The figures are not independently verified. |
| Sundays | $56.85 | The Sunday rate reported in the article, which characterizes it as time-and-a-half on $37.90. It is not the same as her reported ordinary hourly rate, and the account does not establish a general Costco policy. |
In practical terms, the headline Sunday amount should not be read as her everyday rate. Nor does an hourly figure establish annual earnings: scheduled hours, Sunday shifts, premiums, bonuses, and benefits all affect total compensation. The article says bonuses and benefits are separate from the hourly wage, but does not establish Joce’s actual annual income.
How she moved into optical work
According to the account summarized by Attack of the Fanboy, Joce moved into Costco’s optical department and became a licensed optician. She said she entered without prior experience or training and learned on the job, with time to study for exams. The article quotes her describing the process as “it’s all on the job training and they give you time to study while working.” That describes her reported experience; it should not be taken as a guarantee that every location or role offers the same training arrangement.

The article says she reported paying $225 for the ABO exam and taking the NCLE as a second exam in her licensing path. Those details come from her account as relayed in the article. They do not establish that the fees, licensing requirements, or sequence are universal or current for every state or applicant.
How the story compares with broader Costco pay claims
Attack of the Fanboy also summarizes Reuters reporting based on an internal Costco memo: a $20 starting wage, a $30.20 top-of-scale hourly rate, and planned $1 increases in each of the next two years. That is a secondhand account of Reuters’ reporting, and the memo and figures were not independently checked for this article. It is a separate company-pay claim, not confirmation of Joce’s individual rate or of a current wage at every Costco location.
