It is an easy recommendation for newcomers who want the Definitive Edition; for anyone who already owns the Switch release, the upgrade case is much weaker: the story and game content are the same, and Switch save data cannot transfer.
What kind of RPG is DRAGON QUEST XI S?
You play as the Luminary, a young hero drawn into a globe-spanning quest to save the world. The game builds on classic turn-based RPG foundations: assemble a party, choose actions in battles, and travel through a large fantasy adventure. Battle speed can be adjusted, making routine encounters less of a drag when you want to move along. Nintendo presents the adventure as one that can occupy more than 100 hours; that is publisher language, not a measured completion-time guarantee. Nintendo UK’s original Switch listing
The S edition is the expanded Definitive Edition, not simply the base game with a new frame-rate option. It includes additional character-focused story chapters, Japanese voices and additional English voice content, an orchestral score, and a choice between the full 3D presentation and a retro-inspired 2D mode. Side quests also let you visit settings from earlier Dragon Quest games. Square Enix lists these features as part of the Switch 2 release. How does the Switch 2 version perform?
Square Enix lists two graphics modes for Switch 2. They offer a straightforward choice: prioritize image resolution or prioritize frame rate. These are the publisher’s stated targets, not independent measurements of how consistently the game hits them in play.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Mode | Official target | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|
| Quality Priority | 1440p at 30 fps | Players who prefer the higher-resolution presentation. |
| Performance Priority | 1080p at 60 fps | Players who prefer the higher-frame-rate target. |
Both modes are disclosed in Square Enix’s DRAGON QUEST XI S FAQ. Nintendo Life’s reviewer called this the best handheld way to play the game, a qualitative assessment rather than a technical benchmark. Its earlier review of the Switch edition noted performance issues on that version; those observations concern the earlier hardware and should not be taken as evidence about the Switch 2 release. Does the adventure still hold up?
The appeal is in the combination of a familiar, readable battle system and the scale to let its cast and world unfold over a long journey. The Definitive Edition’s added character stories give the companions more room beyond the main quest, while the orchestral score, alternate 2D presentation and past-world excursions add variety around the central adventure. These are meaningful parts of the edition’s identity, not Switch 2-exclusive additions.

Nintendo Life’s September 24, 2026 review praises the game as one of the strongest modern examples of classic JRPG design. The earlier Switch review likewise praised its story, characters, overworld, music and breadth of content. That earlier critique described the game as relatively forgiving for players who pursue content beyond the main story, while pointing to Draconian Quest settings for those seeking a harder run; those difficulty observations refer to the Switch edition’s review, not a separate Switch 2 test. What is the difference between the Nintendo Switch version and the Nintendo Switch 2 version?
Square Enix says both releases contain the same story and game content. The Switch 2 edition’s listed difference is its hardware-specific graphics options. Crucially for returning players, Switch save data cannot be transferred to the Switch 2 retail version. Square Enix’s FAQ does not establish an upgrade entitlement or owner discount, so existing owners should treat this as a separate purchase rather than assume a free or discounted upgrade. Is DRAGON QUEST XI S worth buying on Switch 2?
If you are new to the game
Yes, if you want a large, traditional RPG and have a Switch 2. Square Enix says prior experience with this game or the Dragon Quest series is not required. You get the Definitive Edition’s extra stories and presentation options alongside the choice of graphics mode, without needing to know the earlier releases. Square Enix FAQ
If you already own the Switch edition
Be more cautious. You are not buying additional story content, and you cannot bring your Switch save into the Switch 2 retail version. The case rests on whether the listed graphics options and playing on Switch 2 are worth buying the game again for you. Nintendo Life’s review reaches a similar split: it praises the game and handheld experience but questions the value for existing owners. Nintendo Life, September 24, 2026

Verdict
DRAGON QUEST XI S is still a compelling classic-style RPG, and the Switch 2 edition packages its defining extras with a useful resolution-versus-frame-rate choice. New players can buy in confidently if they want this kind of long-form adventure. For Switch owners, the lack of new game content and save transfer makes this a quality-of-play decision, not a content upgrade.
