Mohamed Diawara has a plausible path to a larger role with the New York Knicks in 2026-27, but a Year 2 breakout is a possibility—not an established outcome. NBA.com identified him as a breakout candidate in its 2026-27 season preview, pointing to his rookie three-point shooting and potential opportunity for regular rotation minutes. The real test is whether he can turn that opportunity into dependable value beyond one skill.
What did Diawara show as a rookie?
Diawara’s 2025-26 regular-season numbers establish a modest starting point, not proof of a settled NBA rotation role. NBA.com lists him as a 6-foot-9, 225-pound Knicks forward and No. 51 pick in the 2025 draft.

| 2025-26 regular season | NBA.com figure | What it shows |
|---|---|---|
| Appearances and starts | 69 games; seven starts | He appeared regularly, but starts were limited. |
| Minutes | 9.2 per game | A small role by playing time. |
| Points, rebounds and assists | 3.6 points, 1.4 rebounds and 0.8 assists per game | Low-volume production in that role. |
| Three-point shooting | 36.9% for the 2025-26 season, as reported in NBA.com’s 2026-27 preview | A promising spacing signal; it does not establish that the percentage will hold at greater volume. |
Why could Year 2 be a turning point?
In its 2026-27 Knicks season preview, NBA.com calls Diawara a breakout candidate and says he may be the only player under 25 on the veteran roster with a good chance of regular rotation minutes. That is a preseason assessment of his opportunity, not a confirmed depth-chart position or a promise of playing time.

But a good rookie percentage alone does not show how he will fare with more attempts, nor does it establish that the coaching staff will trust him in varied game situations. The breakout question is therefore two-part: can he earn more minutes, and can he make those minutes useful?

What would count as a breakout?
Use observable benchmarks rather than a single hot stretch. The comparison point for playing time is his 9.2 minutes per game as a rookie; the shooting question is whether he remains a credible threat from three as his role and shot volume change. Neither benchmark, by itself, answers whether he is dependable enough to stay on the floor.
- More responsibility: Does his playing time rise beyond his rookie baseline, and does he appear consistently in the rotation?
- Sustainable shooting: Does he continue to make threes when defenses and a larger workload put more pressure on that skill?
- Reliable possessions: Can he defend his assignment, rebound, and make sound decisions well enough to contribute even when shots are not falling?
The available NBA.com material supports the first two as useful things to watch, but does not establish detailed strengths or weaknesses in his defense, rebounding or decision-making. Those are questions for the season, not conclusions to assume in advance.

Could the G League be part of his development?
The NBA G League profile identifies Diawara as a Knicks forward assigned to the Westchester Knicks. That confirms a development connection, but it does not establish that he will be assigned to Westchester during 2026-27. A G League stint, if one occurs, would be a route for development—not proof that his NBA opportunity has ended or that a call-up is guaranteed.

It is a credible preseason possibility, mainly because NBA.com sees a potential opening for regular minutes and cites his rookie three-point shooting. The evidence does not yet establish a breakout: his rookie role was limited, and whether he can sustain his shooting while contributing in other parts of the game remains to be seen. The clearest sign of progress will be a larger, lasting rotation role supported by more than perimeter shooting.
