Valve offers developers three ways to calculate regional price recommendations; each developer chooses whether to use them, change a price, or leave it as it is. The Steamworks explorer says its conversion data is based on public data as of January 2026.
What changed in Steam’s regional pricing guide?
Steamworks now presents three methods developers can use to think about prices across currencies and regions. The explorer is a tool for comparing approaches, not a mechanism that changes a game’s store price. Valve says the methods are intended to help developers make informed pricing decisions.

The explorer states that the methods use public data as of January 2026. Valve’s documentation says Steam’s pricing tools cover 37 currencies and four region groups. The reference date does not establish when the data will next be updated.
| Method | What it considers | What that means for a recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| Exchange-rate conversion | Currency exchange rates | Converts a price using exchange rates alone. |
| Purchasing-power conversion | Public data about purchasing power in a country or region | Reflects local purchasing power rather than relying only on currency exchange. |
| Multi-variable conversion | Local purchasing power, expected prices of comparable entertainment goods, and exchange rates | Combines several factors to suggest a regional price. |
These are alternative recommendations, not three mandatory steps or a single formula that dictates what customers pay. Developers can choose a method, mix approaches, conduct their own market research, set different prices, or retain existing prices. See Steam’s regional pricing explorer and pricing documentation.

Are Steam games getting more expensive outside the US?
Some developers may raise prices in some markets after considering the updated recommendations; others may leave prices unchanged or lower them. Valve’s material does not establish that prices will rise across all games, or that any country will experience a uniform increase. A recommendation is not a forecast of a game’s final price.
The outcome depends on the developer’s decisions for each game and the currencies or region groups in which it is sold. Without comparing a specific game’s current and former prices and its developer’s published changes, there is no supported percentage increase to report.

Will Steam raise regional prices automatically?
No. Steam says the prices a developer enters for each currency and region group are up to that developer. The guide does not automatically apply a new price to every game or customer store page.
Price changes are reviewed before publication, rather than scheduled to happen automatically. After review, a developer can publish a change at a chosen time or have Valve publish it immediately. A price increase in any currency triggers a 30-day cooldown on submitting discounts. Steam’s documentation also says price changes should wait until 30 days after a game’s release, subject to exceptions for correcting major errors; developers should check the live policy for current details.

How is this different from Steam’s earlier regional pricing change?
In 2023, Valve announced that Argentina and Turkey would move to USD-denominated regional prices, alongside LATAM-USD and MENA-USD price regions. Valve said prices could rise in some countries and fall in others, depending on the prices developers had set before the change. That episode shows how a pricing-system change can affect markets differently; it does not establish what the 2026 conversion methods will mean for any particular game. Valve’s announcement about the Argentina and Turkey change describes that earlier transition.

Changing your store country to evade regional prices or content restrictions is not a legitimate workaround. Steam Support says attempts to bypass regional pricing or content restrictions by using another region are forbidden. See Steam’s Steam Store Country guidance for the applicable rules.
