Sony’s latest statement says it will not absorb every component-cost increase and does not intend to sell hardware at significant losses. It does not say that all hardware subsidies are ending, disclose the next console’s manufacturing cost, or set a retail price.
What Sony’s latest statement says about hardware pricing
In its July 2026 Game & Network Services investor-relations Q&A, Sony said: “As for pricing, it is not realistic for us to absorb all component cost increases, and we have already implemented some price increases outside Japan.” The same answer says: “As a principle, we do not intend to sell hardware at significant losses.” Sony added that it is monitoring the market and evaluating its approach.
Those are statements about Sony’s general hardware-pricing approach. The Q&A refers to a “next-generation platform” and says Sony is investing in it, but it does not itself identify a retail product called PlayStation 6 or announce a price for one.
Why that does not confirm an end to subsidies
Not absorbing every component-cost increase is not the same as passing on every cost, and avoiding significant losses is not a promise that every console will sell at break-even or at its full manufacturing cost. Sony’s wording leaves room for different pricing decisions; it does not quantify a subsidy or say all hardware subsidies are ending.

- Model Number CFI-2000
- Includes DualSense Wireless Controller, 1TB SSD, 2 Horizontal Stand Feet, HDMI Cable, AC power cord, USB cable, printed materials, ASTRO’s PLAYROOM (Pre-installed game)
- Vertical Stand sold seperately
The sources do not provide a bill of materials, a per-unit manufacturing cost, or a planned retail price for the next console. Without those figures, there is no supported calculation that leads to $1,200.
What the $1,200 figure means—and does not mean
The number in the headline should be treated as speculation, not a Sony estimate, confirmed price ceiling, or sourced manufacturing-cost calculation. Retail price and manufacturing cost are different measures, and the available statements do not establish either one for the next-generation platform.

Sony’s platform scale does not resolve the price question: the company reported more than 93 million PS5 units and 125 million monthly active user accounts as of March 2026. Those figures describe the existing platform, not expected PS6 demand, production costs, or pricing.

In a May 8, 2026 report, GameSpot quoted Sony president and CEO Hiroki Totoki saying the company had not decided the next console’s launch timing or price. That was a dated account of the company’s position at the time. Sony’s later July Q&A still did not announce a price.

What to watch for in a confirmed price
- A direct Sony announcement: The cited July Q&A discusses pricing principles, not a product price or configuration.
- A clearly identified estimate: Any $1,200 figure should be labeled as an analyst or leaker estimate if one is later published, rather than presented as Sony’s position.
- Like-for-like cost claims: A manufacturing-cost estimate, a retail price, and the amount of any subsidy are distinct claims; the sources cited here quantify none of them.
