Counter-Strike 2’s March 18, 2026 update changed the reload rule: the used magazine is dropped, and any ammunition left in it is discarded. Reloading takes a full magazine from the player’s reserve instead. Valve said the change was meant to make the decision to reload carry greater stakes. The “25 years” in the original headline is framing, not a duration established by the available sources.
What happens when you reload in CS2 now?
Under the rule described in Valve’s March 18, 2026 update notes, reloading discards the remaining ammunition in the magazine currently in the weapon. The weapon then receives a fresh, full magazine drawn from reserve ammunition.

Reserve ammunition is represented differently depending on the weapon: it may be counted as magazines, shells, or individual bullets. The important practical distinction is that leftover rounds in the magazine are no longer returned to an effectively endless reserve when you reload.

Valve said the previous system returned leftover magazine ammunition to an “essentially endless reserve,” so reloading carried little meaningful cost. Its stated goal was to make the choice to reload have “higher stakes.”

With the new rule, reloading early spends reserve ammunition that would previously have been preserved. Players therefore have to weigh the convenience of starting the next engagement with a full magazine against the ammunition lost from the one they leave behind.
Did weapon ammunition counts also change?
Contemporaneous PC Gamer coverage reported that Valve adjusted ammunition counts for individual weapons alongside the reload redesign. The available official update information confirms the general reload change, but does not establish a complete, verified weapon-by-weapon list of those count adjustments or their net gameplay effect. No specific count changes or balance outcomes can be stated here.

Does this really end “25 years” of magic ammo?
The sources establish the reload change and Valve’s explanation, but they do not verify an exact 25-year duration for the old system. Treat that phrase as headline framing rather than a confirmed historical statistic. The precise mechanics described here are those in Valve’s March 18, 2026 notes; later revisions or current live behavior are not established by those sources.
