For better-looking Counter-Strike: Source, start with the game’s video options and test one change at a time. The most relevant documented command is mat_hdr_level, which controls HDR; whether HDR looks better depends on your display, the installed game build, and your preference. Commands from Counter-Strike 2 or other Source-engine games are not automatically compatible.
Start with the in-game video options
Use Counter-Strike: Source’s video settings first. They are the straightforward way to change display and graphics options, and they are easier to reverse than a startup override. Change one option, check the result in-game, and note its original value before experimenting.
To try console commands, enable the developer console in the game’s controls settings, then open it using the key assigned there. Enter a command and value, press Enter, and check the result. Labels and menu organization can vary by game build.
HDR: the main graphics command worth testing
mat_hdr_level controls HDR rendering. Steam’s launch-options help describes +mat_hdr_level 0 as HDR off and +mat_hdr_level 2 as full HDR. The game-specific Counter-Strike: Source reference also identifies HDR as an in-game video feature and rendering option. See Steam Support’s launch-options guide and the Counter-Strike: Source reference at PCGamingWiki.

2requests full HDR according to Steam’s guide. Compare it with the off setting in the game rather than assuming it is universally better.
These documented values are not a guarantee that every installed build, display, or configuration will respond identically. The available sources do not establish a universal best value or a specific performance cost. Change the value in-game where possible, then keep the setting that looks right to you.
In-game setting or startup override?
A menu setting is generally the simplest first choice. A launch option can apply a setting when the game starts, but only if that command supports startup use. Steam Support cautions: “Many Console Commands can function as a launch option by adding a ‘+’ in front of the console command, but some cannot be used in this fashion.”

| Method | How it works | Best use | Restore or troubleshoot |
|---|---|---|---|
| In-game video options or console | Change a setting while using the game; test its visible effect immediately. | First-line experiments and changes you may want to adjust often. | Reopen the option or enter the prior value you recorded. |
| Supported launch override | Pass a console command with a leading +, for example +mat_hdr_level 2. Steam notes that not every console command accepts this form. |
A setting you have verified works in your installed game and want applied at startup. | Remove the override from launch options, then restart the game. |
| Engine parameter | Uses a leading -; Valve’s command-line reference lists options such as -mat_antialias. |
Only when the parameter is documented and confirmed for your game version. | Remove the parameter if it causes problems. Do not assume a parameter listed for another engine version remains effective. |
To add or remove a startup override, open Steam, right-click Counter-Strike: Source in your Library, choose Properties, and edit the Launch Options field. Steam’s launch-options instructions explain the syntax. Use one tested setting at a time; avoid pasting a long command string copied from another game or an old guide.
Why broad command lists can mislead
Valve’s command-line options reference includes graphics-related entries such as -mat_antialias and +mat_hdr_level, while also warning through its entries that some legacy parameters are deprecated or ineffective on modern hardware or newer engine versions. A command appearing in a reference does not prove it is supported by your installed Counter-Strike: Source build, nor that it improves the image.

For that reason, there is no reliable all-purpose “best graphics” launch string to recommend here. Avoid transferring commands from Counter-Strike 2 or unrelated Source games without specific compatibility evidence. Likewise, do not expect an undocumented value to improve anti-aliasing, lighting, or performance simply because its name sounds relevant.

If a display or video change leaves the game unusable, Steam Support recommends -autoconfig as a way to configure a Valve/Source game using settings detected for the machine. It is a recovery option, not a graphics enhancement.
- In Steam Library, right-click Counter-Strike: Source and choose Properties.
- In Launch Options, enter
-autoconfig, then start the game. Steam documents this option in its video and display troubleshooting guide. - After the game starts with detected settings, close it and remove
-autoconfigfrom Launch Options unless you deliberately want it to run again. - Relaunch and adjust the in-game video settings gradually.
Valve’s historical Counter-Strike: Source update notes say settings including mat_hdr_level, r_rootlod, and r_waterforceexpensive are saved in the user’s configuration file. Because those notes are old, treat them as historical context rather than proof that every current build persists each setting the same way.
