For a cozy game on Steam, start with the activity you want: take an unhurried hike through a small world in A Short Hike, or build a landscape one tile at a time in Dorfromantik. “Cozy” describes a mood and style of play, not one specific genre, and these two games show how different that experience can be.
Choose the kind of cozy play you want
The key difference is what you do repeatedly. A Short Hike is about moving through a place and discovering what is there. Dorfromantik is about placing tiles and shaping a landscape. Neither is a definitive answer to what belongs on a list of cozy games; they are two distinct starting points drawn from a small selection of Steam listings.
| Game | Core activity | Structure and pace | Best fit if you want… |
|---|---|---|---|
| A Short Hike | Hike, climb, and soar through a park | Follow marked trails or explore at your own pace; the Steam listing says there is no need to rush to the summit | Exploration and discovery |
| Dorfromantik | Place tiles to grow a village landscape | Peaceful building strategy and puzzle play | Thoughtful placement and landscape-building |
If you want to wander: A Short Hike
Steam describes A Short Hike as a single-player adventure set in Hawk Peak Provincial Park. You can follow marked trails or head into the backcountry, hiking at your own pace rather than hurrying to the summit. That makes it the more direct fit of these two if you want a gentle trip through a world, with exploration as the main activity. The Steam store page lists the user-defined Cozy tag; that tag is a useful signal, not a formal genre definition.
The game was released July 30, 2019, by developer and publisher adamgryu. Its Steam listing says it has full controller support and that “The developers recommend playing this game with a controller.” That recommendation applies to this game, not to cozy games on Steam as a whole.

If you want to build: Dorfromantik
Dorfromantik turns landscape-making into a tile-placement puzzle. Steam describes it as a peaceful building strategy and puzzle game in which players place tiles to create an expanding village landscape, and characterizes the gameplay as relaxing and calming. Pick it over an exploration game if you would rather consider where each tile goes than travel through a character-led world.
It was released March 17, 2022, by Toukana Interactive, which is both developer and publisher. PC Gamer’s September 2026 roundup draws a distinction between strategic tile placement and a mode for freely creating a map. That distinction can help if you are deciding whether you want the puzzle side of landscape-building or a more open-ended way to make a map; the Steam listing is the source for the game’s core description.

How to decide between them
- Choose A Short Hike if you want to explore, follow trails, or set your own pace on a small adventure.
- Choose Dorfromantik if you want to place tiles and assemble a landscape through building and puzzle play.
- Think about input. The Steam listing specifically recommends a controller for A Short Hike. That is a game-specific note, not a requirement for this category.
- Check platform details for the individual game. A community post asking for cozy or relaxing games on Steam Deck mentions Dorfromantik, Stardew Valley, Minami Lane, and Tiny Glade, but a player’s suggestion does not establish Steam Deck compatibility for those titles.
These examples are a starting point, not a ranking or a complete catalogue of cozy Steam games. Before buying, check each game’s current Steam page for price, supported input, and Steam Deck status; those details can change and are not established here for every title.
