The release was Crash Bandicoot: On the Run!, a free-to-play mobile runner from King that launched worldwide on Android and iOS on March 25, 2021. King ended the game’s service on February 16, 2023, so it is no longer playable as an active game.
What launched on Android?
Crash Bandicoot: On the Run! was a new mobile game developed by King in collaboration with Activision. Activision announced its worldwide Android and iOS release for March 25, 2021, describing it as a new Crash adventure with familiar locations, enemies, bosses, teams and competitive features. It was free to download and play, with in-app purchases. Activision’s launch announcement sets out the game’s original pitch; Droid Life reported the Android release live on Google Play on March 24, the day before the announced worldwide launch.

The title matters: this was not an Android version of the original Crash trilogy. It was a purpose-built mobile game using the series’ characters, settings and visual style.
How did On the Run! play?
Crash ran forward automatically while players swiped to change lanes, jump, duck, avoid obstacles, break crates and attack enemies. Runs took place in settings drawn from the series, including Temple Ruins, Turtle Woods, The Lost City and The Lab. Players faced familiar characters and bosses such as Scorporilla, Nitrus Brio, Fake Crash and Neo Cortex, and progressed by collecting resources, upgrading equipment, unlocking cosmetics and developing areas of the Wumpa Archipelago.

The game also added teams, survival runs and asynchronous competition through leaderboards. These systems gave the runner a longer-term progression loop beyond completing individual runs. PocketGamer’s contemporary coverage describes the controls, level design and progression, while Activision’s announcement details the social features.
How was it different from classic Crash?

That trade-off made the controls easy to pick up on a touchscreen, but the simplified runner format was less demanding than the platforming many fans associate with Crash. Contemporary coverage also praised the recognizable franchise material while criticizing aspects of difficulty, boss variety and monetization. Droid Life compared its format to a Temple Run-style experience; PocketGamer discussed its gameplay and free-to-play friction.

How did its free-to-play model work?
Free to download did not mean free of monetization. The game offered premium currency, cosmetics and ways to speed up crafting or progression. A PocketGamer review-era account listed in-app purchase prices from approximately $1.99 to $99.99; those were historical prices in the version it covered, not current prices or an indication that purchases remain possible. PocketGamer’s coverage also discusses the tension between accessible free entry and waiting or spending to progress.
When did the game shut down?

Game Developer reported the purchase cutoff and shutdown date; TouchArcade explained that the server shutdown made the online-dependent game unplayable. Reports noted that major update activity had paused later in 2021, but that is not the same as proving the game received no maintenance or support thereafter.

Can you download or play it on Android now?
No—not as a working official game. The app is no longer available as an active Google Play release, and its servers are offline. An old installation or an archived APK cannot restore the service the game depended on. Third-party listings may retain package records or old version details, but those records do not establish that the game can authenticate, retrieve required data or run. AppBrain’s historical listing records the app as unavailable on Google Play; it is not an official download source.
King’s announcement of the shutdown is established, but the sources cited here do not provide a detailed official postmortem explaining the decision. Game World Observer connected the closure to declining revenue; that is a reported explanation, not a confirmed sole cause.
