Short answer: the 2005 parallel-port cable project is now a historical electronics experiment. For an original PlayStation or PlayStation 2 controller, use an active PS1/PS2-to-USB adapter. For a DualShock 4 or DualSense, use the controller’s native USB or Bluetooth connection. A passive plug or USB-to-parallel cable cannot turn a proprietary PlayStation controller into a USB gamepad.
First identify the controller
“Sony PlayStation joystick” can mean several electrically different products. The old parallel-port design was made for the original PlayStation-style connector, not for later USB or Bluetooth controllers.

Do not apply an original-controller pinout or the 2005 circuit to a DualShock 3, DualShock 4 or DualSense.
The best current solution for an original PS1 or PS2 controller
Choose an active adapter
Buy a product that explicitly says it converts PS1/PS2 controllers to USB. It should identify support for the controller generation you own and state whether it provides analog mode, DualShock rumble, one or two controller ports, and XInput or DirectInput operation. A molded socket and documented mode switch are preferable to an unbranded cable with no specifications.

A passive extension lead only rearranges wires. USB requires an active controller interface that identifies itself to Windows as a USB Human Interface Device. Do not substitute a USB-to-parallel adapter; those devices normally do not reproduce the low-level port behavior expected by the old drivers.
Connect and test it
- Confirm that the controller has the original PlayStation plug, not USB, Mini-USB, Micro-USB or USB-C.
- Plug the controller into the PS1/PS2-to-USB adapter, then connect the adapter directly to the PC.
- Let Windows install the generic game-controller device. The displayed name varies by adapter.
- Open Windows’ game-controller configuration panel and test the D-pad, face buttons, shoulders, Start, Select, sticks, L3/R3 and the Analog button.
- If the adapter has Digital, DirectInput or XInput modes, select the mode required by the game. XInput generally gives the broadest compatibility with current Windows games; DirectInput is often preferable for emulators and older software.
- Map controls in the game. Steam Input can translate a DirectInput or PlayStation device when a game does not recognize it directly.
Expect variation between adapters. A digital original controller cannot acquire analog sticks through an adapter. Analog sticks may work only after pressing the controller’s Analog button. Rumble requires a rumble-capable adapter, adequate USB power and game support.
DirectInput and XInput: why detection is not enough
DirectInput
- Older Windows gamepad interface used by many generic adapters and legacy controllers.
- Buttons may appear as numbered inputs and require manual mapping.
- Often exposes the controller’s basic axes and buttons more directly.
XInput
- Xbox-style interface expected by many modern PC games.
- Usually improves automatic detection and standardized prompts.
- Can translate PlayStation controls into Xbox labels and omit special PlayStation features.
Choose XInput when modern-game compatibility is the priority and Xbox prompts are acceptable. Choose DirectInput for software that specifically supports generic gamepads or for emulators. Steam Input is a useful translation layer, not proof that every feature of the original controller is preserved.

Troubleshooting an original controller
Windows does not detect it
- Make sure the product is an active PS-to-USB adapter, not a passive cable.
- Reconnect it to another USB port and avoid an unpowered hub.
- Try the adapter’s alternate mode and inspect Device Manager for an unknown USB device.
- Test the controller with another adapter or console. A damaged plug or cable can look like an adapter failure.
- Replace the adapter before attempting custom wiring.
Buttons work but sticks do not
- Press the controller’s Analog button.
- Verify stick movement in Windows before launching the game.
- Check whether the adapter supports Dual Analog/DualShock controls and whether the game is reading axes rather than only the D-pad.
- Remap the axes in the game or Steam Input.
Rumble is missing
Input compatibility and force feedback are separate. The adapter may have no rumble circuitry, the selected mode may not expose it, the game may lack support, or the controller may not receive enough power. Confirm support for both the adapter and the particular game rather than assuming that a working D-pad guarantees vibration.
The game shows Xbox buttons
This is normal when the adapter or Steam Input presents an XInput device. The game is displaying the logical API’s A/B/X/Y layout, not reading the symbols printed on the physical controller. Use a native PlayStation mode, a game’s PlayStation-prompt option or a Steam layout when available.
It works in Steam but not another launcher
Steam Input may be active only for Steam-launched games. Add the game as a non-Steam game, enable its native controller support, use a separate reputable remapper, or switch the adapter to the mode expected by that launcher.

Connecting newer PlayStation controllers
DualSense over USB
- Connect the controller with a USB-C data cable.
- Wait for Windows to detect it.
- Use Sony’s PlayStation Accessories application when a firmware update is required.
- Launch a controller-enabled game and use Steam Input or another mapper if it expects XInput.
Sony documents DualSense support over USB and Bluetooth on Windows 10 64-bit and Windows 11. Haptic feedback on PC requires USB when supported by the game; adaptive triggers also depend on game support. The headset jack requires a wired PC connection. DualSense over Bluetooth
- Turn the controller off.
- Hold Create and PS until the light bar flashes.
- Open Windows Bluetooth settings and select the controller.
- Test it in Steam or the game’s controller menu.
Sony notes that a DualSense pairs with one device at a time; changing devices requires pairing again. A desktop without Bluetooth can use a USB Bluetooth adapter. Microsoft’s Windows guidance describes that as the normal remedy: Microsoft’s controller-connection guide.

A DualShock 4 works over USB or Bluetooth, but it does not natively present as an Xbox XInput controller. Steam Input or compatible emulation software may therefore be necessary. See the PCGamingWiki DualShock 4 compatibility notes.

DualShock 3
Treat DualShock 3 separately from both the original plug-in controllers and newer pads. Its PC setup can involve specialist drivers, Bluetooth pairing and third-party software, with compatibility varying by Windows version and hardware. See the PCGamingWiki DualShock 3 notes.

The Hardware Secrets design translates signals from an original PlayStation controller to a PC’s parallel-port joystick interface. It is not a USB conversion. The June 2005 article targets Windows 9x/ME, Windows 2000 and Windows XP, with an ECP-configured parallel port and legacy DirectPad or NTpad drivers: the original Hardware Secrets project.
Historical bill of materials
- Five 1N4148 diodes
- One male DB-25 connector and shell
- Approximately 2 metres (6 feet 11 inches) of eight-wire cable
- Soldering equipment and suitable electronics skills
- A PlayStation controller plug, often salvaged
- A PC with a genuine parallel port configured for ECP
The article describes DirectPad for Windows 9x/ME and NTpad for Windows 2000/XP, with “Playstation” selected in the driver configuration. Those are archival software references, not recommended current Windows downloads.

Why it is obsolete for ordinary PC gaming
- Most current consumer PCs have no parallel port.
- Modern Windows does not use the old 9x/ME/2000/XP driver path.
- PCI or PCIe parallel-port cards may not reproduce the behavior expected by the original drivers.
- USB-to-parallel adapters generally do not provide the required low-level port access.
- The circuit exposes a narrow legacy joystick interface rather than a modern USB HID device.
That does not make every reproduction impossible. It makes it a restoration or experimentation project requiring period-correct hardware, controlled legacy software and substantial troubleshooting.
Safety and wiring limitations
Do not copy a pinout from memory or assume that a connector diagram is shown from the mating face rather than the solder side. Incorrect diode direction, DB-25 numbering or connector orientation can damage a controller or parallel port. Verify any archival schematic, use a meter and follow the original diagram’s viewing orientation. Do not replace the circuit with a random DB-25 cable, salvaged plug or USB-to-parallel lead.

For the 8BitDo option, consult the official shop listing; it is a wireless-controller adapter, not a replacement for a PS1-to-USB cable. If you no longer need to preserve legacy hardware, Sony’s DualSense product page is the modern alternative, with regional availability and pricing subject to change.
Bottom line for a safe, working setup
Use an active PS1/PS2-to-USB adapter for an original PlayStation controller, verify its mode and features in Windows before starting a game, and expect to map controls or accept Xbox prompts when XInput is used. Connect a DualShock 4 or DualSense directly by USB or Bluetooth. Reserve the parallel-port circuit for a historically accurate electronics project, not as the normal way to play on a current PC.
