crashhandler.dll Errors: Repair the Steam Game Behind Them

By VGSources Team 10 min read

crashhandler.dll is a Valve Steam Crash Handler Library file, not a Windows system file. If crashhandler.dll is missing or cannot load, repair the affected Steam game first; reinstalling the correct Steam files is safer than downloading a replacement DLL.

What this file actually does

crashhandler.dll is used by Steam and some Steam-distributed games to support crash handling. Public file metadata identifies it as a Valve component and a 32-bit library. Steam installations can also contain crashhandler64.dll, which is used by 64-bit processes.

The file normally belongs in the Steam installation folder or inside a game’s local installation directory. It should not normally be placed in:

  • C:WindowsSystem32
  • C:WindowsSysWOW64

The filename can appear inside a game folder because Steam games may carry local copies of shared or game-specific components. A game may load its local Steam-related files from its own directory instead of loading the copy in the main Steam folder.

The exact error wording depends on Windows, the game, the executable, and the point at which loading fails. Common messages include:

  • “The program can’t start because crashhandler.dll is missing from your computer.”
  • “The code execution cannot proceed because crashhandler.dll was not found.”
  • “Failed to load crashhandler.dll.”
  • “Error loading crashhandler.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
  • “crashhandler.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
  • “The file crashhandler.dll is missing or corrupt.”

The named DLL is not always the true cause. Windows may report the module that failed during loading even when a dependency used by that module is the part that is actually missing.

Fix 1: Restart Steam and verify the affected game

This is the correct first repair when one game is affected.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Close the game.
  2. Exit Steam completely. Open the notification area near the clock, right-click the Steam icon, and choose Exit if it remains there.
  3. Restart Windows.
  4. Open Steam.
  5. Select Library.
  6. Right-click the affected game, or select its gear icon.
  7. Choose Properties.
  8. Select Installed Files.
  9. Choose Verify integrity of game files.
  10. Wait for the process to finish.

Steam may take several minutes and can redownload missing or damaged files. Start the game from Steam after verification completes.

A few files may be reported as failing verification even when nothing is wrong. Local configuration files and files changed during normal use do not always match the copies Steam expects. The important result is whether Steam restores the missing component and the game starts afterward.

If verification repeatedly redownloads crashhandler.dll, do not keep copying a replacement into the folder. Check whether antivirus software removes it again, whether the drive has errors, whether the game folder is writable, and whether a mod or third-party launcher changes the files when the game starts.

Fix 2: Repair the Steam client without deleting your games

Use this path when Steam itself reports the missing file, cannot start, or several Steam games are affected.

First, restart Windows and launch Steam again so it has a chance to complete a pending update. If the client still fails, download the current installer from Steam’s official download page and install it to the existing Steam location.

Do not uninstall Steam casually before doing this. Installing the client over the same location can repair Steam client and service files while preserving installed games. Removing Steam by other methods can also remove game and userdata content.

After reinstalling:

  1. Open Steam.
  2. Sign in if prompted.
  3. Allow Steam to update fully.
  4. Test Steam itself.
  5. If one game still fails, use Library → game → Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files.

If Steam is installed in a custom location, confirm that the installer targets that existing folder rather than creating a second Steam installation elsewhere. A second installation can leave the game library and the repaired client looking at different files.

Fix 3: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file

Security software can remove a legitimate application file after an update or after a change in detection rules. Treat a quarantine alert seriously rather than automatically allowing the DLL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In Windows Security:

  1. Open the Start menu and search for Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Choose Protection history.
  4. Inspect recent detections.
  5. Open the relevant entry and check the original path, publisher information, and threat name.

If the file came from the expected Steam or game installation and the detection has been investigated as a false positive, follow Windows Security’s restore or allow instructions cautiously. Then verify the game files or reinstall Steam so the file comes from the application’s own distribution channel.

If Defender removed the file rather than quarantining it, do not search for a standalone copy. Run Steam’s verification process or reinstall the Steam client over the existing installation. If another antivirus product is installed, review its quarantine and exclusion controls as well.

If the detection identifies credible malware, leave the file quarantined, run a full security scan, and repair the Steam or game installation afterward. Restoring an unsafe file can put the computer at risk.

Fix 4: Confirm the 32-bit and 64-bit files are not being mixed

A 32-bit program needs the 32-bit crashhandler.dll. A 64-bit process may need crashhandler64.dll. Windows 11 and Windows 10 can run 32-bit programs on 64-bit systems, so a 64-bit version of Windows does not mean every application needs the 64-bit DLL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not:

  • Rename crashhandler64.dll to crashhandler.dll.
  • Rename crashhandler.dll to crashhandler64.dll.
  • Copy a file from another game or Steam installation.
  • Mix files from different Steam or game versions.
  • Move either file into a Windows system directory.

The safe repair is to let Steam restore the file for the specific executable. If an old game, mod, custom launcher, or non-Steam executable is involved, check whether it expects a particular local installation and whether the launcher has been modified. Verification may not repair files outside the location managed by Steam.

A message saying the file is “not designed to run on Windows” points more toward corruption, an architecture mismatch, or a blocked or modified binary than a need to register the DLL.

Fix 5: Identify the dependency that is really missing

Read the complete error instead of stopping at the first filename. If it names VCRUNTIME140.dll, MSVCP140.dll, a DirectX component, or another runtime file, repair that dependency rather than installing crashhandler.dll again.

For Visual C++ errors, use Microsoft’s current supported Visual C++ Redistributable packages. Older games may require legacy DirectX components, including files associated with D3DX, XAudio 2.7, XInput 1.3, or XACT. Use the game’s official requirements or bundled prerequisite installer to determine what it needs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Steam games can use common redistributables, and both 32-bit and 64-bit packages may be needed on 64-bit Windows. Install only the runtime named by the error or required by the game. Installing Visual C++ or DirectX merely because crashhandler.dll appears in the message usually does not solve this particular problem.

If the game’s prerequisite installer fails, restart Windows, run the installer from the game’s own files as administrator, and verify the game again afterward.

Fix 6: Repair broader Windows corruption only when symptoms justify it

crashhandler.dll is not normally a protected Windows component. SFC and DISM will not normally recreate this Steam-local file. Use them when Windows itself has broader problems, such as damaged built-in applications, failing system components, repeated system errors, or other Windows files reported as corrupt.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Search for Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click it and choose Run as administrator.
  4. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
  1. Wait for it to finish.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Wait until the scan reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart Windows and test Steam again.

Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. If either command reports an error, note the exact message instead of repeatedly running the same command. Repair the Steam or game installation separately because these commands are not designed to restore an app-private Steam DLL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When manually hunting through Windows components and repeating SFC or DISM leaves you unsure what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues and show what it finds; its repair action requires the full version. Reinstalling the affected Steam game remains the definitive fix when the missing file belongs to that game.

Fix 7: Check drivers only when the failure is broader than Steam

A graphics or chipset driver does not normally restore crashhandler.dll, so do not begin with Device Manager for a single missing-file message. Consider driver repair when multiple games crash, Windows displays graphics errors, or the problem began after a hardware or driver change.

To inspect drivers:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand Display adapters.
  4. Right-click the graphics device and choose Properties.
  5. Open the Driver tab.
  6. Check the driver status and recent driver details.
  7. Use Update Driver only with a driver from Windows Update or the hardware manufacturer.
  8. Restart Windows and test the affected game.

Do not replace crashhandler.dll with a driver file or use a driver installer from an unknown source. If the game has a known graphics requirement, compare it with the manufacturer’s official driver support.

When checking every device manually means guessing which of dozens of drivers is stale, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver issues; installing drivers through its full version is optional and not required for this DLL repair. Steam verification or reinstalling the affected program remains the definitive fix when the game file itself is missing.

Why regsvr32 is not the fix

Do not run:

regsvr32 crashhandler.dll

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. An ordinary application-private runtime library does not become usable because it was registered in Windows.

Running the command can produce an error that distracts from the real problem. It can also encourage you to place the file in the wrong directory. Restore crashhandler.dll through Steam’s verification or installation process instead.

Why random DLL downloads are unsafe

A DLL download site cannot reliably match the file to your game, Steam build, executable architecture, or dependencies. A downloaded file may be the wrong version, altered, malicious, or intended for a different application. Even a clean but mismatched DLL may leave the original update, quarantine, permissions, or dependency problem untouched.

Never copy crashhandler.dll into System32 or SysWOW64 as a workaround. Use Steam’s client installer, Steam’s game verification feature, the game’s official installer, and Microsoft’s official runtime pages when the full error specifically names a Windows dependency.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the error remains after repair

Collect these details before trying more changes:

  • The complete error text
  • Whether Steam itself or only one game fails
  • The executable and DLL paths shown in the message
  • Whether crashhandler.dll or crashhandler64.dll is named
  • The result of Steam file verification
  • Any antivirus detection and original file path
  • Whether the game was moved, modded, or launched outside Steam
  • Any relevant Event Viewer application error
  • Whether other Steam games work

If verification completes but the game still crashes, remove unsupported mods and custom launchers, test the unmodified game, and reinstall it if necessary. If every Steam title fails, focus on the Steam client, antivirus interference, storage errors, and broader Windows symptoms rather than replacing the DLL manually.

FAQ

Is crashhandler.dll a Windows file?

No. It is associated with Valve’s Steam Crash Handler Library and normally belongs to Steam or a Steam game. It should not normally be in System32 or SysWOW64.

Why is the file in my game folder?

Steam games can contain app-local copies of Steam-related components. The game may load that local copy when its executable starts.

What is the difference between crashhandler.dll and crashhandler64.dll?

crashhandler.dll is the 32-bit file. crashhandler64.dll is the related 64-bit file. Do not rename or substitute one for the other.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will Steam verification always restore it?

It should restore a missing or damaged file that belongs to the verified game. If antivirus software immediately removes it, or if the file belongs to the Steam client instead, address that separate cause.

Should I download a specific historical version?

No. Steam updates its files, and different games may carry different local copies. Historical version and size lists are not universal download targets.

Can SFC repair crashhandler.dll?

Normally no. SFC repairs protected Windows components, while this is normally a Steam or game file. Use SFC and DISM only for wider Windows corruption.

What if the file exists but the game still crashes?

The file may be corrupt, mismatched, blocked, or only the module named during a dependency failure. Verify the game, inspect the complete error for another missing DLL, and check antivirus activity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When should I reinstall Windows?

Not for an isolated crashhandler.dll error. Repair Steam or the affected game first. Consider broader Windows recovery only when multiple unrelated Windows components fail and normal repair commands do not resolve those symptoms.
