craxddrt20.dll is a legacy Crystal Reports ActiveX/COM component, not a Windows system file. The safest fix is to identify the application that needs it, then repair or reinstall that application or its matching Crystal Reports component instead of copying a loose DLL into System32.

What this file actually does

craxddrt20.dll is associated with Crystal Reports ActiveX Designer Design and Run Time Support, also described as part of Crystal Reports .Net ActiveX Designer. Crystal Decisions originally developed the component.

It belongs to an older Crystal Reports integration used with certain editions of:

  • Visual Studio .NET 2002
  • Visual Studio .NET 2003
  • Visual Studio 2005
  • Older business applications that embedded the Crystal Reports ActiveX or RDC interface

Microsoft documented the file in the historical location:

The Microsoft bulletin lists one affected Visual Studio .NET 2002 SP1 build as version 9.1.2.1871, with a size of 8,926,800 bytes. That is documented evidence for that installation, not a guarantee that every legitimate Crystal Reports installation uses the same version.

This is an old, 32-bit-era component. It is not normally supposed to be in either of these Windows folders:

C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64

A 64-bit version of Windows can run a 32-bit application, so seeing Windows 11 or Windows 10 does not automatically mean that you need a 64-bit Crystal Reports runtime.

Cause-by-symptom guide

What you see Most likely cause Best next step
The error appears when one old business program starts That program’s private Crystal Reports files are missing Repair or reinstall the business application
The problem began after changing Visual Studio The Crystal Reports feature was removed or damaged Modify or repair the old Visual Studio installation
The file exists, but the application says it cannot create an object COM registration is damaged Re-register the existing file
The error began after antivirus activity The DLL was quarantined Check Protection history and verify the file before restoring it
A 64-bit runtime was installed but the error remains The application expects a legacy 32-bit ActiveX component Use the application vendor’s matching installer
Several Crystal Reports applications stopped working Shared COM registration or a shared component changed Repair the affected products and avoid random DLL replacement
SFC or DISM reports Windows corruption Windows has a separate integrity problem Run the Windows repair commands, but do not expect them to recreate this DLL

Fix 1: Identify the program that owns the file

Do this before downloading or reinstalling anything. The error dialog usually names the application that failed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Write down the complete application name shown in the error.
  2. Note whether the error appears during startup, when opening a report, or when exporting or printing.
  3. Open Event Viewer:
  4. Press Win + X.
  5. Select Event Viewer.
  6. Expand Windows Logs.
  7. Select Application.
  8. Look for an error at the same time the program failed.
  9. Check the Faulting application name and Faulting module name fields.
  10. Search the application’s installation folder for craxddrt20.dll.

If only one program fails, repair that program first. Do not begin by repairing Windows or installing unrelated Visual C++, DirectX, or printer packages.

If the application was supplied by an employer, accountant, manufacturer, or software vendor, its installer may contain a private Crystal Reports component. In that situation, the application vendor’s installer is more appropriate than a generic Crystal Reports package.

Fix 2: Repair the parent application

This is the most likely solution when the file was removed, damaged, or deleted during cleanup.

Windows 11 and Windows 10 repair steps

  1. Press Win + R.
  2. Type:

text
appwiz.cpl

  1. Press Enter.
  2. Find the application that displays the error.
  3. Right-click it and select Change, Repair, or Modify, depending on what the installer provides.
  4. Follow the repair wizard.
  5. Restart Windows.
  6. Start the original application and open the report or task that previously failed.

If the program has no repair option:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps in Windows 11, or Apps & features in Windows 10.
  4. Select the affected application.
  5. Choose Advanced options if available.
  6. Select Repair.
  7. Test the program after the repair completes.

The Settings repair option is not available for every traditional desktop application. If it is missing, use the original installer or Control Panel.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the application was removed

Find its original setup media, deployment package, or official vendor installer. Install the same product family and edition that originally worked with the report files.

Do not assume that installing a current Crystal Reports runtime will replace this old component. Modern Crystal Reports for Visual Studio applications commonly use packages named like:

CRRuntime_32bit_13_x.msi
CRRuntime_64bit_13_x.msi

Those are newer .NET reporting runtimes. They should not automatically be treated as replacements for the legacy ActiveX component represented by craxddrt20.dll.

After reinstalling:

  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Start the affected application.
  3. Check whether the error is gone.
  4. If it remains, confirm that the installer actually includes the old Crystal Reports component and that the application is using the expected architecture.

Fix 3: Repair the old Visual Studio Crystal Reports feature

If the error began after repairing, modifying, or uninstalling an old Visual Studio installation, the Crystal Reports feature may no longer be installed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft’s historical repair path is:

  1. Open Control Panel.
  2. Select Programs and Features.
  3. Select the relevant Visual Studio installation.
  4. Choose Change.
  5. Select the option to modify or update installed features.
  6. Add or repair the Crystal Reports for Visual Studio feature.
  7. Complete the installer.
  8. Restart Windows.
  9. Test the application that uses the report.

The wording varies between Visual Studio releases. Look for Change, Modify, Update, or a feature-selection screen. If the original installation media is requested, use the same media or an official installer for that Visual Studio edition.

This approach is relevant to the old Visual Studio integration documented by Microsoft. It is not a reason to install a random newer Visual Studio component.

Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine

Antivirus software can remove or quarantine an old DLL because legacy components may have unusual age, packaging, or behavior. That does not prove the file is malware, and the file’s age alone is not a reason to trust it.

Check Windows Security

  1. Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Look for an event involving craxddrt20.dll.
  5. Expand the event and inspect:
  6. The detected file path
  7. The detection name
  8. The parent application
  9. The action already taken
  10. Do not restore the file immediately.
  11. Verify that the path belongs to the known application and that the application came from a trusted installer.
  12. If your organization manages antivirus policy, ask an administrator or security team to review it.

Restore a quarantined file only when you have confirmed that it is the correct file from a trusted application and that the detection is a false positive. Otherwise, reinstall the parent application from its official installer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After restoring a legitimate file, launch the original application. If Windows Security quarantines it again, stop restoring it and investigate the detection instead.

Fix 5: Re-register the existing DLL with regsvr32

regsvr32 genuinely applies to this file because craxddrt20.dll is an ActiveX/COM component. Registration is useful only when the correct DLL already exists. It cannot download, recreate, or repair a missing file.

First, confirm that the file exists. Use File Explorer to check the historical location:

C:Program FilesCommon FilesCrystal Decisions1.0Bincraxddrt20.dll

The actual path may differ for a vendor application.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Unregister the existing file

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Run the command using the actual path:
regsvr32.exe -u "C:Program FilesCommon FilesCrystal Decisions1.0Bincraxddrt20.dll"
  1. Read the result. A successful operation should report that the unregister operation succeeded.
  2. Register the file again:
regsvr32.exe "C:Program FilesCommon FilesCrystal Decisions1.0Bincraxddrt20.dll"
  1. Restart the affected application.

Use quotation marks because the path contains spaces. If the file is under a different directory, replace the path rather than copying it elsewhere.

On 64-bit Windows, an old 32-bit COM component may need the 32-bit regsvr32.exe located at:

C:WindowsSysWOW64regsvr32.exe

For example:

C:WindowsSysWOW64regsvr32.exe "C:Program FilesCommon FilesCrystal Decisions1.0Bincraxddrt20.dll"

Only use this when the application is 32-bit and the normal command reports an architecture-related error. Do not register every DLL in the Crystal Reports installation directory.

If registration fails with a message about a missing entry point or dependent module, the file may be the wrong build, a dependency may be absent, or the application may expect a different architecture. Repair the parent product instead of repeatedly running registration commands.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not individually register DLLs from modern CRRuntime_32bit_13_x.msi or CRRuntime_64bit_13_x.msi packages as a substitute for this legacy file.

Fix 6: Confirm the file’s path, publisher, and architecture

If you find a copy of the file, inspect it before using it.

  1. Right-click the file.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open the Details tab.
  4. Check the description and product information.
  5. Open the Digital Signatures tab if present.
  6. Use View Certificate to inspect the signer.
  7. Confirm that the path belongs to the expected Crystal Reports installation or the trusted application.

The expected historical directory is more meaningful than the filename alone. A file named craxddrt20.dll sitting in a temporary download folder, an unfamiliar game directory, or a Windows system folder deserves investigation.

To check the application architecture:

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
  2. Open Task Manager.
  3. Select the Details tab.
  4. Right-click a column heading.
  5. Select Select columns.
  6. Add Platform if your Windows version provides it.
  7. Check whether the failing application is 32-bit or 64-bit.

A 32-bit application generally needs its 32-bit dependencies. Installing a 64-bit runtime because Windows itself is 64-bit does not satisfy that requirement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 7: Do not copy the DLL into Windows folders

Avoid instructions that tell you to copy this file into System32, SysWOW64, or every application directory you can find.

That approach can:

  • Load the wrong version
  • Create a 32-bit and 64-bit mismatch
  • Break COM registration
  • Cause one application to use another product’s file
  • Hide the real installation problem
  • Create conflicts when several Crystal Reports generations coexist

The correct location is controlled by the installing product and its COM registration. Restore the component through the parent application’s installer whenever possible.

Random DLL download websites are also unsafe sources. A loose download may contain malware, the wrong version, the wrong architecture, or an incomplete set of dependent files. Even a genuine-looking copy often does not repair the COM registration or the application’s installation state.

Use the original application vendor’s installer, official Crystal Reports or SAP distribution provided for that application, or the original Visual Studio installation media. If the vendor no longer supplies the installer, contact its support team and provide the application name, exact error, Windows version, and the old installation path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 8: Run DISM and SFC only for broader Windows corruption

craxddrt20.dll is a third-party application file. Windows integrity tools do not normally recreate it.

Use these commands when you are also seeing broader Windows problems, such as damaged built-in applications, repeated component-store errors, or other Windows-protected files failing.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click it.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for it to finish.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Test the Crystal Reports application again.

Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC when repairing Windows components. If both commands complete successfully but the application still reports craxddrt20.dll missing, return to the parent application repair. SFC and DISM are not replacements for the Crystal Reports installer.

If manually repeating SFC and DISM leaves you unsure what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported system issues and show what needs attention; repairs are performed by the full version, but reinstalling the affected Crystal Reports application remains the definitive fix for this file.

Fix 9: Check drivers only when the application’s failure is broader

A graphics, printer, or database driver is not normally the cause of a missing craxddrt20.dll file. Consider drivers only if the application also crashes during printing, rendering, database access, or display initialization.

Check Device Manager

  1. Press Win + X.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the relevant category, such as:
  4. Display adapters
  5. Printers
  6. Network adapters
  7. Sound, video and game controllers
  8. Right-click the device.
  9. Select Properties.
  10. Open the Driver tab.
  11. Check the provider and date.
  12. Use Update Driver only with a driver from Windows Update or the hardware manufacturer.
  13. Restart Windows and test the application.

Do not expect driver installation to restore the missing Crystal Reports component. If manually hunting through hardware pages and comparing driver versions is the problem, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for reported outdated drivers; installation is handled by the full version, and the Crystal Reports application still needs repair if its DLL is missing.

What to do when the original installer is unavailable

Use this order:

  1. Identify the exact application that fails.
  2. Search its installation media, deployment share, or backup for the original setup program.
  3. Contact the application vendor and request the matching installer or runtime.
  4. Check whether the vendor has a supported replacement version.
  5. If the failure followed a recent uninstall or cleanup and no installer exists, consider System Restore.
  6. If you find the DLL already present in the correct application directory, try the carefully bounded regsvr32 procedure.
  7. If the file is absent, do not use a random download as a permanent solution.

System Restore is especially relevant when the application worked immediately before a product uninstall, disk-cleanup operation, or system change. It is not the first choice when a clean vendor installer is available.

If multiple Crystal Reports generations are installed, repairing one product can alter shared COM registration used by another. Record which applications currently work before making changes, and test each one afterward.

Frequently asked questions

Is craxddrt20.dll part of Windows?

No. It is a Crystal Reports ActiveX/COM component associated with Crystal Decisions software and applications that embedded it.

Is the file 32-bit or 64-bit?

The documented evidence ties it to legacy 32-bit-era Crystal Reports and Visual Studio software. Confirm the architecture of the failing application and use the vendor’s matching component.

Should I download craxddrt20.dll separately?

No. A standalone download may be malicious, incompatible, unsigned, or incomplete. Repair the application that originally installed it.

Does modern Crystal Reports contain this exact DLL?

Do not assume so. Modern Crystal Reports for Visual Studio packages use newer runtime models and package names. They are not automatically replacements for this legacy ActiveX component.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does regsvr32 fix a missing file?

No. It can repair registration when the correct file already exists. Restore the file through the proper installer first.

Will SFC or DISM restore it?

Normally no. They repair Windows-protected files and the Windows component store, not third-party Crystal Reports files.

Why does the error mention a game?

A game or other application may have bundled or depended on Crystal Reports, but the filename itself identifies a reporting component, not a general Windows or gaming runtime. Repair the specific program named in the error.

What should I give technical support?

Provide the application name, Windows 10 or Windows 11 version, exact error text, file path if present, whether the application is 32-bit, recent antivirus or uninstall activity, and whether the file exists in the application’s installation directory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The reliable endpoint is a restored, matching parent application with its expected COM registration. The filename alone is not enough to choose a safe replacement.
