You may also see a message saying that hpqtap08.dll is not designed to run on Windows or contains an error.
The 60-second answer
hpqtap08.dll is a genuine, legacy 32-bit Hewlett-Packard component named TAPAS Link Server. It belongs to HP Digital Imaging and older HP all-in-one software used with some printers, scanners, and Photosmart cameras.
The safest fix is not to download the DLL separately. Find the HP program named in the error, uninstall its damaged or incomplete installation, restart Windows, and reinstall the complete software package for the exact HP device from HP’s official support site.

Do not copy the file into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. Do not run regsvr32 as a routine missing-DLL repair. Those steps can leave the original HP installation broken and may introduce an incompatible or unsafe file.
What is hpqtap08.dll?
The file’s description is TAPAS Link Server, and its publisher is listed as Hewlett-Packard Co. It is an application component, not a Windows system library.
HP Digital Imaging software was used with older HP product families, including:
- HP PSC all-in-one printers
- HP Officejet all-in-one devices
- HP Scanjet scanners
- HP Photosmart cameras and imaging products
The DLL name alone cannot identify the exact HP model or application that triggered the error. The program shown in the error, the HP device connected to the computer, and the installed HP software list are better clues.

C:Program FilesHewlett-PackardDigital Imagingbinhpqtap08.dll
or:
C:Program FilesHPDigital Imagingbinhpqtap08.dll
On 64-bit Windows, a 32-bit HP program may instead be installed below C:Program Files (x86). That is normal. A 32-bit application file does not belong in SysWOW64; that folder is part of Windows’ compatibility system, not a general-purpose storage location for downloaded DLLs.
Historical HP-related inventories show more than one build of this legacy component. A reported 32-bit build is version 130.0.0.0 and approximately 0.27 MB, while older inventories show different metadata. Do not use one catalog value as proof that every copy should have the same version or size.
Why did the error start?
The most common causes are:
- HP Digital Imaging was partially uninstalled
- An HP driver or full-feature software installation failed
- An HP update replaced only part of the old imaging package
- Antivirus software quarantined or removed the file
- Disk cleanup deleted part of the HP application
- The HP program folder was moved manually
- An old system image restored mismatched HP files
- A newer Windows upgrade exposed an obsolete HP startup entry
- A required dependency of the DLL is missing
The wording “specified module could not be found” does not always mean that hpqtap08.dll itself is absent. Windows can display that message when the DLL exists but one of the libraries it needs is unavailable. This is another reason that reinstalling the complete HP package is more reliable than replacing one file.
First, identify the affected HP software
Check the error window
Read the title bar and the text around the error. It may name an HP utility, scanner application, printer assistant, imaging toolbar, or startup component.
Write down that program name before uninstalling anything. If the message appears during startup and names no program, continue with the installed-app checks below.
Check installed applications
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps in Windows 11, or Apps & features in Windows 10.
- Search for
HP,Hewlett-Packard,Digital Imaging,Photosmart,Scanjet,Officejet, orPrinter Assistant. - Note the entries that match the HP device you still use.
You can also open Control Panel, select Programs, then Programs and Features. Older HP imaging packages are sometimes easier to remove from this interface.
If you no longer use the HP device and the error appears only during startup, uninstalling the orphaned HP software is usually cleaner than restoring an isolated DLL.

Check the file’s path before trusting it
If you locate hpqtap08.dll:
- Right-click the file.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Details tab and check the description and publisher-related information.
- Open Digital Signatures, if that tab is available.
- Select the signature and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid and that it relates to Hewlett-Packard or HP.
A copy in an HP Digital Imaging folder is more plausible than a copy in System32, a temporary folder, a downloads folder, or an unrelated application directory. The filename by itself does not prove that a file is genuine. Scan suspicious copies before opening the associated program.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the complete HP package
This is the most likely fix.
Remove the damaged HP installation
- Disconnect the HP printer, scanner, or camera if the HP installer instructs you to do so.
- Open Settings with Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Open Installed apps or Apps & features.
- Find the HP imaging, printer, scanner, or device software named by the error.
- Select the three-dot menu, then choose Uninstall.
- Follow the HP removal wizard.
- Restart the computer when it finishes.
If the program does not appear in Settings, open Control Panel → Programs and Features, select the HP entry, and choose Uninstall or Change.
Remove older HP imaging packages that clearly belong to the same device or software generation. Several overlapping HP packages can leave incompatible files behind. Do not remove unrelated HP software if you still need it for another device.
Download the correct HP installer
- Open HP’s official support site.
- Search for the exact printer, scanner, camera, or all-in-one model.
- Select the version of Windows installed on the computer.
- Download the full software and driver package when it is available, rather than a basic driver alone.
- Run the installer.
- If the installer offers Repair, choose it first. Otherwise choose the normal installation option.
- Connect the HP device only when the installer requests it.
- Restart Windows after the installation completes.
The package must match the actual model. Installing software for a similar-looking HP product can leave the device unusable and may not provide the correct version of hpqtap08.dll.
How to tell whether this worked
Open the HP scanning, printing, or imaging application that previously failed. Print a test page or perform a test scan if appropriate. The original error should no longer appear, and the HP program should open without a missing-DLL prompt.
If the installer fails, restart Windows again and remove the older HP imaging package before trying the model-specific full installer. Temporarily investigate whether security software is blocking the installer, but do not leave antivirus protection disabled longer than necessary.
Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine
Windows Security or another antivirus product may have quarantined the DLL. This can happen after a scan, cleanup operation, or change in security settings.
Check Windows Security Protection History
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review entries related to
hpqtap08.dll, HP Digital Imaging, or the affected HP program. - Open an entry to view its path and action.
Restore the file only when all of these conditions are satisfied:
- The path is inside the legitimate HP Digital Imaging installation folder.
- The file belongs to the HP installation you recognize.
- Its digital signature is valid or the file can be restored safely by reinstalling HP software.
- A current security scan does not identify the installation as malicious.
If the file was found in System32, a temporary directory, or an unrelated application folder, do not restore it simply because its name matches. Run a full scan and reinstall the HP package from HP instead.
A filename can appear in malicious software analysis without proving that every file with that name is malicious. Path, signature, scan results, and installation source all matter.
Fix 3: Reinstall the HP driver through Device Manager
A failed driver installation can leave the application and its supporting files out of sync.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, Imaging devices, Cameras, or Universal Serial Bus controllers, depending on the HP hardware.
- Right-click the affected HP device.
- Select Uninstall device.
- If Windows offers Attempt to remove the driver for this device, select it only when you are removing the failed HP package and have the correct replacement installer ready.
- Select Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the complete HP installer downloaded for the exact model.
If the device is not listed, select View → Show hidden devices in Device Manager. Remove only stale entries that clearly belong to the affected HP device.

Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of hunting through Device Manager and checking which drivers are stale; its free scan shows what it finds, while driver installation is handled by the full version. For hpqtap08.dll, however, the model-specific HP installer remains the definitive repair.
Check Windows Update drivers
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Open Advanced options → Optional updates.
- Expand Driver updates, if available.
- Install an HP driver only when it matches your device.
- Restart Windows.
Windows Update may provide a usable printer driver, but it may not install the older HP imaging application that owns hpqtap08.dll. If scanning or imaging features are missing, use HP’s complete software package.
Fix 4: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Windows System File Checker is not expected to restore hpqtap08.dll, because this is an HP application file. These commands are still useful if Windows Installer, system components, or the installation environment are damaged.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Select Yes when User Account Control asks for permission.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish. Do not close the window if the progress appears to pause.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Retry the HP installer or repair option.
If DISM reports that it cannot find source files, restart the computer, install pending Windows updates, and run the command again. If SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupted files, restart before testing the HP application. If both commands complete successfully but the error remains, return to the HP reinstall procedure rather than repeatedly running SFC.

Fix 5: Use System Restore after a recent change
Use System Restore when the problem began immediately after an HP driver update, software removal, or failed installation and a suitable restore point exists.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the
hpqtap08.dllerror began. - Select Scan for affected programs.
- Review the programs and drivers that will be changed.
- Close running applications.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart and complete the operation.
System Restore normally rolls back system settings, installed programs, and drivers without removing personal documents. If the restore does not resolve the problem, reinstall the correct HP package afterward.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do not install a random runtime or copy the DLL
Visual C++, DirectX, and .NET are not the default answer
hpqtap08.dll is an HP application component, not a Microsoft runtime, DirectX file, or standard .NET file. Installing several redistributables at random can create more confusion and does not replace the missing HP program.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Install a Microsoft prerequisite only if the complete HP installer explicitly identifies that prerequisite. Use Microsoft’s official download source and install the architecture requested by the installer.
Do not copy it into System32 or SysWOW64
Those folders contain Windows-managed components. Placing an HP application DLL there can:
- Leave the application using the wrong version
- Create conflicts between 32-bit and 64-bit components
- Overwrite a trusted file
- Fail to resolve the missing dependency
- Make future HP repairs harder
The correct location is normally inside the HP application directory.
regsvr32 is not a general missing-DLL repair
regsvr32 applies to DLLs that provide registration functions such as DllRegisterServer. There is no public evidence that hpqtap08.dll should be manually registered.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Do not run:
regsvr32 hpqtap08.dll
as a default repair. If an official HP installer or HP support instruction specifically requests registration, use the exact path supplied by that instruction and run the command from an elevated terminal. Otherwise, repair the complete application.
Avoid DLL download sites
Random DLL download sites may provide:
- Malware or tampered files
- The wrong historical build
- The wrong architecture
- A file without a valid HP signature
- A DLL that still lacks its dependencies
Even if the error disappears temporarily, the HP application may remain incomplete. Use the original HP installer, the recovery media supplied with the device, or a backup made from the same legitimate installation.

If the error appears every time Windows starts
When no HP device is currently used, the message may come from an orphaned startup entry.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for an HP imaging or printer assistant entry.
- Right-click it and select Disable.
- Restart Windows.
Disabling startup does not repair the software, but it can stop an obsolete utility from attempting to load. If you no longer need the program, uninstall it from Settings → Apps → Installed apps instead.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDo not disable an entry solely because it contains “HP” if you still use the associated printer or scanner. Frequently asked questions
Is hpqtap08.dll part of Windows?
No. It is an HP Digital Imaging application file named TAPAS Link Server. It is not a Windows component and is not normally restored by SFC.
Which HP product installed it?
It was used by older HP Digital Imaging software associated with HP all-in-one printers, scanners, cameras, and related imaging products. The exact triggering model cannot be determined from the filename alone.
Is the file 32-bit?
Yes, the known file information identifies it as a 32-bit component. It can run as part of an older 32-bit HP application on 64-bit Windows.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Should I place it in System32 or SysWOW64?
No. Restore it through the HP application installer so it returns to the correct HP Digital Imaging folder.
Why does Windows say “specified module could not be found” when the file exists?
One of the DLL’s dependencies may be missing, or the file may be damaged or incompatible. Reinstalling the complete HP package repairs the surrounding files together.
Should I register it with regsvr32?
Not by default. There is no public evidence that this file is meant to be manually registered.
What if the original HP installer no longer supports my Windows version?
Try the model’s official HP support downloads and any repair option already installed. If no compatible installer remains, the practical solution may be newer scanning or printer software, a supported driver, or replacement hardware rather than forcing an obsolete imaging component to run.
