The dependable way to run a Create Chronicles: Bosses and Beyond server is to use the pack’s matching Forge 1.20.1 Server Files archive, Java 17, and enough memory for your group. The community setup guide lists 8GB of RAM and a CPU rated at least 3.5GHz as the server baseline. Some managed hosts advertise 6GB as a starting plan, but that is a provider-specific recommendation rather than a universal requirement. Follow the local procedure below if you want complete control, or use a managed panel when you want the files and updates handled for you.

What you need before installing
Create Chronicles: Bosses and Beyond is a Forge modpack for Minecraft 1.20.1. The server and every player must use the same pack release; a different client version can fail during the Forge handshake or produce missing-mod errors. Prepare the following before you download anything:

|---|---|---|
| Mod loader and game | Forge for Minecraft 1.20.1 | The server files, mods and configuration are built for this loader/game combination. |
| Java | Java 17, preferably an Adoptium distribution | Newer or older Java releases can prevent the launch scripts or mods from starting correctly. |
| Memory | At least 8GB for the server, according to the Create Chronicles Series community setup guide | Mod loading, chunk generation, machines and entities all compete for heap space. |
| Processor | CPU rated at least 3.5GHz | Simulation and world-generation work is sensitive to per-core speed as well as core count. |
| Server package | The Server Files archive for the exact pack version your players install | It includes the launch scripts and the server-side configuration expected by the pack. |
| Storage and permissions | A writable folder with room for the world and generated files | Linux must allow the scripts to execute and the process to write its logs, world and configuration. |
The guide’s wording is specific: “at least 8GB of RAM” and a “CPU with at least 3.5GHz.” Treat those as a floor, not a promise that every group will have identical performance. View distance, chunk generation, machine count and entity activity can raise the requirement.

Local installation
Running the files on your own Windows or Linux machine gives you direct access to every configuration file, JVM argument and world backup. It is the best fit when you already have a capable computer, can leave it running, and are comfortable applying updates manually. You are responsible for Java, permissions, firewall or network access, crash recovery and backups.

Managed hosting
A managed provider supplies a control panel and server storage, so you do not have to extract archives, edit launch scripts or keep a home computer online. The trade-off is a recurring fee and less direct control over the underlying machine. Compare the allocated RAM, CPU quality, storage, backup policy and expected player count; a high slot count does not guarantee that a heavily modded world will run well.
| Decision factor | Local machine | Managed panel |
|---|---|---|
| Control | Full access to JVM arguments, folders, logs and world files. | Panel-level controls with provider-managed infrastructure. |
| Initial effort | Install Java, extract files, run scripts, accept the EULA and maintain updates. | Order a plan and use the provider’s modpack installer. |
| Ongoing work | You perform backups, upgrades, permission fixes and troubleshooting. | The provider handles much of the deployment; you still need world backups and version discipline. |
| Cost pattern | Uses your existing hardware and electricity. | Monthly charge; advertised prices and plan contents can change. |
| Capacity planning | Limited by your CPU, RAM, storage and connection. | Limited by the selected plan and the host’s CPU, storage and backup terms. |
Install the server locally on Windows
1. Download the matching Server Files archive
- Install the same Create Chronicles: Bosses and Beyond release that your players will use.
- On CurseForge, open the pack’s Files tab.
- Select the required version and download its Server Files archive. Do not substitute a client profile or a different release.
2. Extract to a dedicated folder
Create a new folder used only by this server, then extract Server-Files.zip into it. Keeping the world, config, defaultconfigs, kubejs, logs and scripts together makes backups and upgrades predictable. Avoid placing the folder inside a location where Windows security software continually blocks script execution.

3. Start the files once
Double-click startserver.bat. The first launch creates or expands the server files and may take considerably longer than later starts. Leave the window open until the process finishes its initial work; closing it early can leave an incomplete setup.
4. Accept the Minecraft EULA
After the first run, open eula.txt. Change eula=false to eula=true, save the file, and run startserver.bat again if the script stopped after generating the file. Keep the EULA setting in the same server folder as the launch script.
5. Confirm a successful launch
Watch the console for the completion message Dedicated server took XX seconds to load. The number varies by hardware and world state; the important part is that the process reaches the ready state instead of exiting with a Java, Forge or missing-file error.
Install the server locally on Linux
1. Extract and check ownership
Extract the same versioned archive into a directory owned by the account that will run Minecraft. The process needs read and write access to the world, logs, configuration folders and generated files.

2. Make the launcher executable
If the script does not have execute permission, run:
sudo chmod +x startserver.sh
Run that command once from the server directory, then launch with:
./startserver.sh
The first run generates files just as it does on Windows. Stop only after the script has completed its initial pass or has clearly stopped on the EULA prompt.
3. Accept the EULA and restart
Edit eula.txt, replace eula=false with eula=true, save, and run ./startserver.sh again when required. Keep the terminal session, service manager or shell process running while players are connected.

4. Verify the ready message
Use the same readiness check as Windows: the console should report Dedicated server took XX seconds to load. If the process returns immediately, inspect the preceding lines for permissions, Java-version or missing-file errors rather than repeatedly restarting it.
Set memory deliberately with the JVM arguments
The supplied scripts read their heap settings from usr_jvm_args.txt. The two values to understand are:

-Xmssets the heap allocated at startup.-Xmxsets the maximum heap the server may use.
Open usr_jvm_args.txt in a text editor and change the existing values instead of creating a second, conflicting set of flags. Leave operating-system memory available for Java itself, the file cache and other services; assigning every gigabyte to -Xmx can cause swapping or an operating-system out-of-memory kill. Increase the maximum only when logs, garbage-collection pauses or sustained load show that the current allocation is inadequate. More heap is not an automatic cure for a slow CPU, excessive view distance or a runaway machine setup.
After editing, stop the server completely and start it again so the new values are applied. Check the startup output for the effective Java command if you need to confirm that the script accepted the change.
Plan RAM and performance for your player group
There is no single memory number that fits every world. The useful sizing axes are concurrent players, view distance, how quickly new chunks are generated, and the number of machines and entities active in loaded areas.
| Concurrent players | Published planning range | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| 1–5 | 6–8GB, according to DedicatedMinecraft.host (updated July 1, 2025) | Use the lower end only when the hardware and world are light; keep headroom as exploration and automation increase. |
| 5–15 | 10–12GB, according to DedicatedMinecraft.host (updated July 1, 2025) | More simultaneous exploration and active contraptions make the upper range safer for a growing world. |
| Any group | 8GB is the community guide’s documented server baseline | Use this as the minimum starting point for a self-hosted installation, then observe actual load. |
Some providers recommend beginning at 6GB for a small group. That figure is a host-specific starting recommendation, not a replacement for the community guide’s 8GB baseline. If you are choosing a plan, leave room for world growth rather than buying exactly the amount used on the first evening.
- View distance: higher values keep more terrain active and increase memory and CPU work.
- Chunk generation: several players exploring in different directions can create a short-term load spike even when the average player count is low.
- Machines and entities: large Create builds, item transport and crowded farms add recurring simulation work.
- CPU quality: the documented 3.5GHz floor describes frequency, but sustained single-thread performance and cooling also affect tick stability.
- Storage: a growing world needs free space for region files, logs and backups; a full disk can look like a mod or permission failure.
Use a managed host when you want one-click deployment
WinterNode
WinterNode advertises one-click installation for the pack, Forge/Minecraft 1.20.1 support, a 6GB recommendation and a displayed starting price of $11.94 per month. Treat that price and specification as time-sensitive provider claims: verify the current plan, renewal price, storage, backups and location before ordering.
Crafty Servers
Crafty Servers says the pack needs at least 6GB and that its installer deploys the pinned release automatically. Confirm which release is pinned and how changing versions or restoring a world works in the panel.

PlayNHost
PlayNHost documents this workflow: order a server, open the modpack panel, choose CurseForge, search for the pack, and install the selected version. Its published starting point is a 6GB plan. Select the exact pack version rather than accepting an unrelated search result.
A provider-neutral installation checklist
- Choose a plan whose RAM and CPU match your expected concurrent players, not merely the advertised slot count.
- Confirm Forge and Minecraft 1.20.1 are available in the modpack installer.
- Search for Create Chronicles: Bosses and Beyond and select the same release your clients will use.
- After deployment, open the console and wait for the dedicated-server readiness message.
- Record the assigned address, panel credentials and backup controls before inviting players.
- Test a second player joining, exploring and using a representative machine area while monitoring memory and tick behavior.
Provider plans and pack versions change. Recheck the live price, included backups, CPU allocation, storage limits and cancellation terms at the time you publish or purchase.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Connect players without losing version control
Every player should install the identical modpack release and use Forge for Minecraft 1.20.1. When someone cannot join, first compare the version shown in the launcher with the version installed on the server. A client that has extra mods, missing mods or a different configuration can fail before the player reaches the world.
- Keep the server console visible during the first connection attempt.
- Ask the affected player for the exact disconnect or missing-mod text rather than a screenshot of the launcher alone.
- If the server is local, verify that the machine is reachable from the players’ network and that its firewall allows the Java process; the exact networking change depends on your operating system and router.
- Do not change pack files while the server is running. Stop it first, make the change, then launch again and retest.
Update the pack safely
Updating replaces more than the visible mod list. A safe update starts with a complete shutdown and a rollback copy.

- Copy the entire world folder to a separate backup location. Keep at least one copy that will not be overwritten by the upgrade.
- Back up the current
config, defaultconfigs, kubejsandmodsfolders, along with any customized JVM argument file. - Download the new release’s Server Files archive.
- For a manual update, delete or replace the existing
config/,defaultconfigs/,kubejs/andmods/folders with the versions from the new archive. - Do not overwrite your rollback copy. Start the updated server and watch the console for errors before allowing the group back in.
- If the world fails to load or a mod reports an incompatibility, stop immediately and restore the previous folders and world rather than repeatedly changing files.
Keep the world backup and the previous configuration together. A rollback is only useful when the world, scripts and settings that created it can be restored as a consistent set.
Troubleshoot the first launch
The script will not run on Linux
Check that you are in the extracted server directory and that startserver.sh has execute permission. Run sudo chmod +x startserver.sh once, then launch it with ./startserver.sh. If it still exits, verify that the account owns the folder and can write to it.

- discover community creations in the new in-game store
- access new mini games and game modes through servers
The server stops after creating files
Open eula.txt and confirm it reads eula=true. Save the file in the server directory and restart the matching script.
Java reports an unsupported version
Install and select Java 17, preferably an Adoptium build, then run the script again. Confirm that the Java executable used by the shell or batch file is the Java 17 installation rather than another version already on the machine.
Players receive missing-mod or handshake errors
Compare the client and server pack release, Forge version and configuration. Reinstall the client profile from the same release if necessary. Do not copy random client-only files into the server; use the release’s Server Files archive.
The server loads but lags as the world grows
Measure the conditions that changed: concurrent players, exploration, view distance and machine or entity density. Increase memory only within the capacity of the machine, and leave operating-system headroom. If the CPU is below the documented 3.5GHz floor or is throttling, changing -Xmx alone will not solve simulation delays.
An update breaks the world
Stop the process, preserve the broken state for diagnosis, and restore the pre-update world plus the backed-up configuration, kubejs and mods folders. Reattempt only after confirming that the new archive is the intended pack release.
A practical choice for your group
- Choose local hosting when you have a machine meeting the Java, CPU and memory requirements, want file-level control, and can perform backups and updates yourself.
- Choose managed hosting when you prefer a one-click Forge installation, need the server online without your desktop, or do not want to maintain scripts and permissions.
- Start conservatively for a small group, then add capacity when exploration, contraptions or concurrent players consistently consume the available headroom.
- Protect the world first: a tested backup and a matching rollback set matter more than a nominal RAM figure when an update or failed configuration change occurs.
For either route, install the exact Server Files release, run Java 17, accept the EULA, wait for the dedicated-server readiness message and keep the world backed up before changing versions.
