Every player’s client and the server must use the same Minecraft release, mod-loader release and modpack build. A mismatch can prevent the server from starting or disconnect players before they enter the world.

Prepare the machine before first launch
Use a dedicated server directory
Create a new, empty folder for the server. Keeping the installation separate from your client’s modpack files makes updates, backups and troubleshooting safer. Extract the downloaded Server-Files.zip directly into that folder instead of nesting the archive inside another directory.
Confirm Java 21
Install Java 21 and verify that the start script can find it. If several Java versions are installed, the script may use a different executable from the one you tested in a terminal. Check the script or your operating system’s Java association before diagnosing a modpack failure.

Reserve enough memory
The stated minimum is 8GB of RAM for the server machine. That memory must cover the Java process and the operating system, so a computer with exactly 8GB installed has little headroom for other applications. A hosted plan should provide at least the same allocation, and a local machine should avoid running heavy unrelated programs while the server is active.

Keep the client build identical
Have every player install the same Create Chronicles: The Endventure version that the server uses. Record the Minecraft, NeoForge and modpack versions before inviting players; changing only one of those components can create an apparently random connection error that is actually a version mismatch.
Install the server locally on Windows
- Download the server package. Open the modpack’s CurseForge Files page and select the matching Server Files archive. For the current release, that is the archive associated with version 2.0.0 for Minecraft 1.21.1 NeoForge.
- Create the folder. Make a new location such as a dedicated game-server directory. Avoid extracting over an older installation unless you are deliberately performing an update and have a verified backup.
- Extract the archive. Unzip
Server-Files.zipso thatstartserver.bat,usr_jvm_args.txt,eula.txtand the server folders are accessible in the working directory. - Run the first launch. Double-click
startserver.bat. The first run creates configuration, library and world files. Let it finish its setup work without closing the window or interrupting the process. - Accept the EULA after files are generated. Stop the process if it remains open, open
eula.txt, changeeula=falsetoeula=true, save the file and close it. Do not skip the first launch and edit a file that has not yet been created. - Set the Java memory flags. Open
usr_jvm_args.txtand locate the-Xmsand-Xmxoptions.-Xmscontrols the initial heap and-Xmxthe maximum heap. Set values that fit the available machine memory while preserving room for Windows and other services; the server requirement remains at least 8GB of RAM overall. - Start normally. Run
startserver.batagain and watch the console for a completed startup message. Keep the console available while testing so that a missing dependency, Java error or out-of-memory message is visible.
Install the server locally on Linux
- Download the same matching Server Files archive and extract it into a new directory.
- Open a terminal in that directory and inspect the files. The Linux launcher is
startserver.sh. - If the script is not executable, run
chmod +x startserver.sh. - Start the first launch with
./startserver.shand allow it to generate the server files without interruption. - Open the generated
eula.txt, changeeula=falsetoeula=true, save it, then launch the script again. - Edit
usr_jvm_args.txtto tune-Xmsand-Xmx. Keep the maximum within the machine’s available memory and leave capacity for the operating system and any monitoring or backup process.
Run the server under a service manager or terminal multiplexer only after the basic foreground launch works. That separates an operating-system service problem from a modpack or Java problem.
Use a managed Minecraft host
The wiki says that most hosts support one-click modpack installation. In that workflow, select Create Chronicles: The Endventure and confirm that the panel offers the current Minecraft 1.21.1 and NeoForge 1.21.1 combination before creating the instance.

When one-click installation is unavailable
- Download and extract the matching Server Files archive on your computer.
- Use the host’s FTP or SFTP file manager to upload the extracted files, preserving the folder structure.
- If the panel uses a custom-JAR workflow, select the host’s documented Java 21 runtime and point the startup command at the supplied server launcher or JAR.
- Check the loader and Minecraft version in the panel before starting. A generic NeoForge selector may default to a different release than 1.21.1.
- Start once, wait for file generation, edit
eula.txtto accept the EULA, then restart.
Managed hosting changes the operational work rather than the compatibility rules. The host still needs to support the exact modpack build, Java 21 and NeoForge 1.21.1, and it must provide at least the 8GB allocation stated by the wiki.
Configure memory without starving the host
The supplied files centralize Java heap settings in usr_jvm_args.txt. Change the values there instead of creating conflicting flags in several panel fields or launcher scripts.
-Xms: the heap size Java requests at startup.-Xmx: the largest heap Java may use.- Allocation rule: never assign all physical RAM to
-Xmx; the operating system, native libraries, file cache and host control panel also need memory. - Change one variable at a time: if the server fails after a memory edit, return to the previous values and read the console output before increasing allocation.
More RAM does not correct a wrong Minecraft version, missing mod, invalid configuration or Java mismatch. Treat memory tuning as a capacity adjustment after the installation starts cleanly.

Update safely and preserve the world
- Stop the server completely. Use the console’s normal stop command or the host panel’s stop action. Do not replace files while Java is still writing the world.
- Back up the world. Copy the complete world save to storage outside the live server directory. Keep the backup until the updated build has been tested and players can connect.
- Download the new server archive. Confirm its Minecraft and NeoForge versions and read any release-specific notes shown on the Files page.
- Replace the pack-controlled folders. The wiki’s manual update procedure calls for replacing
config/,defaultconfigs/,kubejs/andmods/with the folders from the new archive. - Preserve operational files deliberately. Keep your world and any files you intentionally customized unless the release instructions say otherwise. Do not blindly delete the whole installation when only the pack folders need replacement.
- Start and test privately. Watch the console for errors, connect with a client on the same build, inspect a backup copy of the world if possible, and only then reopen the server to the full group.
A backup is especially important when a release changes mods, scripts or default configuration. The update process can be repeated, but a deleted or corrupted world cannot be recreated from the server archive.

Troubleshoot the failures that occur most often
The launcher closes immediately
Check Java first. The server requires Java 21, and a script that resolves to an older Java installation can exit before NeoForge displays a useful message. Run the launcher from a terminal or keep the Windows console visible so you can read the error.

The server says the EULA is missing or not accepted
Run the server once so it can create eula.txt. Then edit only the value after eula=, changing false to true, save the file and restart. Editing a similarly named file in the wrong directory has no effect.
Linux reports “permission denied”
From the directory containing the script, run chmod +x startserver.sh and launch it with ./startserver.sh. If it still fails, confirm that you extracted the archive on a filesystem where your user can read and execute the files.

Players cannot connect after an update
Compare the client and server Minecraft version, NeoForge version and modpack build. Re-download the matching Server Files archive if the server folders came from a different release. A client update without a server update, or the reverse, is enough to break compatibility.
The process stops with an out-of-memory message
Inspect usr_jvm_args.txt, reduce competing applications and verify that the host is actually granting the advertised allocation. Do not set -Xmx above physical memory. If the machine cannot provide the wiki’s 8GB requirement, move the installation to larger hardware or a larger hosting plan.
An update damaged the world or scripts
Stop the server, restore the pre-update world backup and review which folders were replaced. Repeat the update with the documented config/, defaultconfigs/, kubejs/ and mods/ replacement procedure, retaining the backup until the new build is proven stable.
