The 60-second answer
credssp.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component called the Credential Security Support Provider library. It supports credential delegation for Remote Desktop Services and some Windows Remote Management scenarios.
It is not a Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, .NET, or ordinary application DLL. Do not download it from a random DLL website, copy it from another computer, or run regsvr32 as a generic repair.
Use this sequence:
- Install pending Windows updates and restart.
- Open an elevated Command Prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow
- Restart again.
- If only one application reports the error, repair or reinstall that application.
- If the message is an RDP authentication error rather than a missing-file error, update the client and server instead of replacing the DLL.
What is credssp.dll?
CredSSP securely delegates credentials from a Windows client to a target server. RDP uses it for authentication, and WinRM can use it for multi-hop remoting scenarios.

Microsoft documents the normal Windows location as:
%WINDIR%System32credssp.dll
On a 64-bit installation, 32-bit processes may be redirected from System32 to SysWOW64. That architecture-aware redirection is normal. It does not mean you should copy a file between those folders.
The file ships with Microsoft Windows and is published by Microsoft Corporation. Its exact version and size depend on the Windows release, architecture, servicing level, and installed updates. There is no universal modern version or file size that should be used as a replacement target.
Microsoft describes the component in its SSPI architecture documentation. Its role in credential delegation is also covered by Microsoft’s CredSSP protocol overview.

A DLL can exist in the correct folder while Windows still cannot load it. The file may be damaged, the component store may be unhealthy, a dependent system component may be broken, or the calling application may be incompatible.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates first
A failed or interrupted Windows update can leave protected system components in an inconsistent state. Updating Windows is the safest first step because it can restore servicing files and deliver the correct component for your build.
Windows 11
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Choose Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install everything offered.
- Restart, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Return to Windows Update and check again.
Windows 10
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Choose Update & Security.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install pending updates.
- Restart the computer.
Use Microsoft’s Windows Update instructions if the update screen reports an error.
After restarting, launch the program that produced the message. If it opens normally, the component was probably restored or the update repaired the underlying dependency.
If the error remains, continue with DISM and SFC rather than searching for a replacement DLL.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies with healthy versions from that store. Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC.

Interpret the result
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: SFC found no damaged protected files. Continue with the application, security, or RDP checks below.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: Restart and test again.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: Run DISM again, restart, and run SFC once more. If it still cannot repair the system, use System Restore or a Windows repair reinstallation.
- DISM reports that the source files could not be found: Windows servicing is more seriously damaged. Do not substitute a DLL downloaded from the internet. Move to recovery options.
When you are repeatedly hunting through Windows components and rerunning repairs without knowing what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues and show what it identifies; its free scan shows the findings, while repair actions require the full version. It is optional, and Microsoft’s DISM and SFC remain the primary repair path.
Microsoft’s System File Checker guidance explains the supported process.
Fix 3: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
Security software can remove or quarantine a damaged, modified, or falsely identified system file. Windows Security keeps a record of those actions.
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open the app.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent actions involving
credssp.dll.
Do not restore the file simply because an application says it is missing. First confirm that the item is the genuine Windows component, review the detection details, and run a current Microsoft Defender scan.
If you believe the detection is false, use Microsoft’s guidance for Protection History. Restoring a quarantined item may cause Defender to detect it again unless it is explicitly allowed, and allowing a file without confirming its origin can make the system less safe.
Run a full scan:
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Scan options.
- Select Full scan.
- Choose Scan now.
If malware is suspected, run Microsoft Defender Offline from the same scan options screen. If Windows remains damaged after malware removal, use a recovery option rather than copying a DLL from another computer.
Fix 4: Repair or reinstall the affected application
If only one program reports the error while Windows itself works normally, the application may have a damaged startup component, incompatible plug-in, or broken installation. The program may be surfacing a Windows loading error without being the owner of credssp.dll.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Fix 5: Check the RDP or WinRM connection separately
Some CredSSP errors have nothing to do with a missing DLL. If you see messages such as these, treat the problem as a protocol or policy mismatch:
An authentication error has occurred. The function requested is not supported. This could be due to CredSSP encryption oracle remediation.A CredSSP authentication to <hostname> failed to negotiate a common protocol version.
This commonly occurs when an RDP client and server have different security updates or incompatible CredSSP policy settings. Update both computers, then restart them.
Do not solve a protocol mismatch by downloading credssp.dll. Do not permanently weaken the Encryption Oracle Remediation policy just to make an old server connect.
The relevant policy is under:
Computer Configuration
> Administrative Templates
> System
> Credentials Delegation
If a temporary compatibility change is unavoidable in a controlled environment, document it, limit its scope, and restore the secure setting after the remote computer is updated. Microsoft’s CredSSP update guidance explains the security issue and compatibility settings.

For WinRM, check the client and server update state, authentication configuration, and delegation requirements. CredSSP is used in some multi-hop scenarios, but a WinRM authentication error is not evidence that the DLL is missing.
Fix 6: Check architecture without copying files
On 64-bit Windows, a 32-bit process can be redirected from %WINDIR%System32 to %WINDIR%SysWOW64. The folder names are confusing:
System32contains the native system files for the installed Windows architecture.SysWOW64supports 32-bit applications on 64-bit Windows.
Do not copy a 32-bit file into System32 or a 64-bit file into SysWOW64. Do not copy credssp.dll from another PC unless the Windows edition, build, architecture, servicing state, authenticity, and source are all confirmed. Even then, DISM and SFC are preferable because they repair the component through Windows servicing.
You can check the file’s presence without modifying it:
- Press Windows key + E.
- Enter
%WINDIR%System32in the address bar. - Look for
credssp.dll. - On 64-bit Windows, also inspect
%WINDIR%SysWOW64if the failing program is known to be 32-bit.
Presence alone does not prove that the file is healthy or appropriate for the process. Continue with DISM, SFC, and Defender.
Why regsvr32 usually does not help
regsvr32 is not a general DLL repair command. It is intended for COM DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer.
Rank #4

- Great Support fast responce
- 15 plus years of experiance

credssp.dll is a Windows security provider component, not a typical self-registering COM library. Running this command:
regsvr32 credssp.dll
does not restore a missing file, repair the Windows component store, fix an RDP policy mismatch, or make an incorrect-architecture DLL valid. It may only produce another error.
Use regsvr32 when the software vendor specifically documents it for a particular COM component and registration entry point. It is not an appropriate generic fix for this Windows file. Microsoft documents the command in its regsvr32 reference.
Fix 7: Use System Restore when the problem started recently
System Restore can help when the error began after a driver, update, application, or system configuration change. It rolls back system files and settings without normally affecting personal documents.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
Save open work first. System Restore does not replace a malware scan or remove the need to repair Windows if the component store is damaged.
See Microsoft’s Windows recovery options for the supported recovery paths.

Fix 8: Repair-reinstall Windows
If DISM and SFC cannot restore the component, and System Restore is unavailable or ineffective, use Windows repair recovery.
On supported Windows 11 installations:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Choose Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts.
This option reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings where the option is available. Keep the computer connected to power and back up important data first.
If the option is not available, use Microsoft installation media and choose the repair or in-place upgrade path appropriate for the installation. A full clean installation is a last resort because it removes applications and may remove personal data if the disk is not backed up.
Do drivers or Windows Features matter?
A driver is not the normal owner of credssp.dll. Do not reinstall display, chipset, storage, or network drivers merely because this filename ends in .dll. Investigate drivers only when Device Manager identifies a separate hardware problem or the RDP issue clearly involves a network adapter or related device.
To inspect Device Manager:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Look for a warning icon.
- Expand the relevant category.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
If Windows identifies a separate stale driver and you are tired of hunting through hardware vendors and matching model-specific packages, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver versions; its free scan shows the findings, while driver installation requires the full version. It is optional and is not a substitute for repairing credssp.dll with Windows servicing.
Do not enable Windows Features, install Visual C++, install DirectX, or install .NET solely because an application displays a DLL error. Those packages are not identified as the source of this Windows component.

Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
Third-party DLL sites can provide:
- A file for the wrong Windows build
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
- A modified or malicious file
- An unsigned or improperly sourced copy
- A file that hides the real servicing problem
Manual copying can also create mismatched component versions and interfere with Windows Update. There is no normal standalone CredSSP redistributable intended for manually replacing this DLL.
Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, Microsoft Defender, System Restore, and Windows recovery tools instead. If an application is damaged, use its official repair or reinstall process.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFrequently asked questions
Is credssp.dll a legitimate Windows file?
Yes. It is a Microsoft Windows component used by CredSSP for credential delegation, including RDP and some WinRM scenarios.
Where should credssp.dll be?
Microsoft documents %WINDIR%System32credssp.dll as the normal location. On 64-bit Windows, 32-bit process redirection can involve SysWOW64. Do not move or copy the file between those folders.
Do I need Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Normally, no. credssp.dll ships with Windows and is not identified as belonging to those runtime packages.
Does regsvr32 credssp.dll fix the problem?
Usually not. regsvr32 is for self-registering COM DLLs, not general Windows component repair.

That message usually indicates a client/server update or policy mismatch. Update both endpoints and avoid leaving a weakened CredSSP policy enabled.
Can I copy credssp.dll from another PC?
It is unsafe as a routine fix. The other computer may have a different Windows build, architecture, servicing state, or file authenticity. Use DISM and SFC instead.
What if SFC cannot repair the file?
Run DISM again, restart, and run SFC once more. If repair still fails, try System Restore or a Windows repair reinstallation. Do not use a random DLL download as the replacement source.
What if the error appears only in one application?
Repair or reinstall that application after repairing Windows. If the program is a game, use its own file verification only for files owned by that game, not for the Windows copy of credssp.dll.
