mpath.dll Missing: Check the MATLAB Owner Before Repair

Length13 min Posted Quest giverVGSources Team

Start with this three-minute diagnostic checklist

If mpath.dll is missing, Windows is usually unable to start MATLAB, a MATLAB-compiled application, or another product that embeds MATLAB components. Before changing anything, identify the program that owns the file.

Check these details:

  1. Which program fails?
Note the executable name shown in the error, the Start-menu shortcut, or the application window that appears before the error.

  2. When did the problem begin?
Record whether it followed a MATLAB update, an interrupted reinstall, disk cleanup, antivirus quarantine, migration to another computer, or removal of another application.

  3. What exactly does the error say?
“mpath.dll was not found” is different from “an entry point could not be located in mpath.dll.” The second message usually indicates mismatched MATLAB files rather than a file that is simply absent.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  4. Is the application 32-bit or 64-bit?
A 32-bit program needs compatible 32-bit components. A 64-bit program needs compatible 64-bit components. Do not mix the two.

  5. Does the error show a path?
A path containing MATLAB, binwin64, or binwin32 is strong evidence that MATLAB owns the file. A path inside a vendor application’s folder may indicate a product that embeds MATLAB.

Do not download mpath.dll from a random DLL archive. A replacement can be malicious, built for the wrong MATLAB release, compiled for the wrong architecture, or unable to fix the damaged installation that caused the error.

What mpath.dll is and where it belongs

mpath.dll is the file name for mpath, a MATLAB Path Library component from The MathWorks, Inc. It belongs to MATLAB’s path and runtime libraries, not to Windows.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Public MATLAB crash reports show the file under locations similar to:

C:Program FilesMATLABR2013abinwin64mpath.dll

Older 32-bit MATLAB-based products used a layout similar to:

...matlabbinwin32mpath.dll

The exact folder depends on the MATLAB release and the application using it. The important point is that the file normally stays inside the MATLAB or MATLAB-based product directory. It is not a normal file for:

C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64

Windows Update does not normally recreate it, and Windows component repair tools do not supply third-party MATLAB files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Find the program that owns mpath.dll

Use the full error path

If the dialog displays a path, write it down before closing the message.

  • A path under MATLABR... usually belongs to a full MATLAB installation.
  • A path under an application’s own folder may belong to a compiled or embedded MATLAB product.
  • A path under System32, SysWOW64, a temporary directory, or an unfamiliar download folder deserves caution.

Right-click the executable or shortcut that starts the failing program, choose Properties, and inspect the Target field. This identifies the application even when the error dialog does not.

Check installed applications

On Windows 11:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps.
  4. Search for MATLAB, MATLAB Runtime, or the name of the application that fails.

On Windows 10:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Apps & features.
  4. Search for MATLAB or the affected vendor application.

Also check Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features. Some older MATLAB-based products appear there but not in the newer Settings list.

Inspect the file if it exists

If you find mpath.dll:

  1. Right-click it and select Properties.
  2. Open the Details tab.
  3. Check the description and publisher information.
  4. Open the Digital Signatures tab if it is present.
  5. Use the original product folder as the reference, not a copy placed in a Windows directory.

The description may identify mpath, and the publisher should be consistent with The MathWorks. File properties alone do not prove that a file is compatible with the application, so do not replace surrounding DLLs individually.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Process Explorer when ownership is unclear

If the program opens briefly and then fails, Microsoft Sysinternals Process Explorer can help identify the executable and loaded module path. Search for the failing program, inspect its properties, and review the DLLs or Image information for MATLAB paths.

If the file is present but the program reports an entry-point error, record the exact dependency and path. That evidence is more useful than downloading another copy of mpath.dll.

Fix 1: Repair the owning MATLAB product first

This is the most likely fix for full MATLAB. A missing, partially removed, or corrupted MATLAB installation needs to be repaired by reinstalling the same release from the official MathWorks installer.

MathWorks does not provide mpath.dll as a separate redistributable file. Do not try to reconstruct a MATLAB installation by copying individual DLLs.

Reinstall full MATLAB

  1. Save any MATLAB projects and close MATLAB.
  2. Preserve your MathWorks account, license, activation information, and installer details.
  3. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps on Windows 11, or Settings > Apps > Apps & features on Windows 10.
  4. Find the affected MATLAB release.
  5. Select Uninstall and complete the removal.
  6. Restart Windows.
  7. Download the same MATLAB release from your MathWorks account using the official installer.
  8. Install it using the same architecture required by your application.
  9. Restart again if the installer requests it.
  10. Start MATLAB from its new Start-menu shortcut rather than an old shortcut.

On some older releases, the uninstaller appears in Control Panel > Programs and Features instead. If the uninstall is incomplete, remove only the affected MATLAB release and avoid deleting other MATLAB Runtime installations that may support separate applications.

How to tell whether this worked

Start MATLAB without the old shortcut. Then open the application that originally failed.

  • If MATLAB opens and the application starts, the installation was the cause.
  • If the same error names a different DLL, the installation may still be incomplete or the new error may identify the next missing dependency.
  • If an entry-point error still names mpath.dll, check for multiple MATLAB releases and incorrect search paths before reinstalling repeatedly.

Fix 2: Install the matching MATLAB Runtime

A compiled MATLAB application may not include a full MATLAB installation. Instead, it depends on a separate package called MATLAB Runtime.

The Runtime release must match the MATLAB release used to compile the application. Installing the newest Runtime at random is not a reliable substitute. Different compiled applications can require different Runtime releases, and several Runtime releases may legitimately coexist on one computer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Identify the required Runtime release

Look in:

  • The application’s readme or installation folder.
  • The vendor’s installation instructions.
  • The application’s error log.
  • The original installer or deployment documentation.
  • The software vendor’s support information.

If you cannot identify the release, contact the application vendor and provide the executable name, full error text, Windows version, and bitness.

Install the Runtime

  1. Close the affected application.
  2. In Settings > Apps > Installed apps, search for MATLAB Runtime.
  3. Keep existing Runtime releases unless you know which application uses them.
  4. Obtain the matching MATLAB Runtime installer from MathWorks’ official MATLAB Runtime download page.
  5. Choose the correct Windows architecture.
  6. Run the installer.
  7. Restart Windows if requested.
  8. Start the compiled application again.

A developer with MATLAB can download the Runtime using:

compiler.runtime.download

That command is for obtaining the Runtime package. It does not repair a damaged full MATLAB installation.

How to tell whether this worked

The compiled application should start without asking for mpath.dll. If it still fails, compare the required release with the installed release and check whether another Runtime directory is being selected first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not remove every MATLAB Runtime version as a cleanup step. One release may support one application while another release supports a different application.

Fix 3: Correct a 32-bit and 64-bit mismatch

Architecture errors can look like missing-DLL errors. A 32-bit application cannot use a 64-bit MATLAB library, and a 64-bit application cannot use a 32-bit library.

Check the application’s architecture

Use one of these methods:

  • Look in the vendor’s documentation or installer details.
  • In Task Manager, right-click the column headings on the Details tab and enable Platform where available.
  • Check whether the installation uses a binwin32 or binwin64 directory.
  • Ask the software vendor when the architecture is not documented.

The folder name is useful evidence but does not replace the vendor’s compatibility information.

Match the installation

  1. Close the application.
  2. Identify whether it needs 32-bit or 64-bit MATLAB components.
  3. Remove the incompatible installation only if it is not required by another application.
  4. Install the matching MATLAB release or MATLAB Runtime.
  5. Launch the application from its original shortcut.

Do not copy a file from binwin64 into a 32-bit application directory, or the reverse. This can replace one error with a loader failure and leave the installation in a less predictable state.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 4: Remove an incorrect MATLAB path from the launch environment

A deployed MATLAB application can fail when an older MATLAB or Runtime directory appears earlier in the search path than the release it requires.

Check the Windows PATH variable

  1. Press Windows, type environment variables, and select Edit the system environment variables.
  2. In System Properties, open the Advanced tab.
  3. Select Environment Variables.
  4. Review both User variables and System variables.
  5. Select Path and choose Edit.
  6. Look for entries pointing to old MATLAB or MATLAB Runtime folders.
  7. Do not delete an entry unless you know which application uses it. Record the original value first.
  8. Move the required release ahead of conflicting MATLAB entries only when the vendor’s instructions specify that arrangement.
  9. Select OK on each dialog and restart the application.

Some applications set their own environment when launched. If changing PATH has no effect, use the application’s official launcher or contact its vendor rather than adding random folders to PATH.

How to tell whether PATH was the issue

If the program works from its official shortcut but fails from a custom script, batch file, or third-party launcher, that launcher may be supplying the wrong environment. Compare the two launch methods and remove stale MATLAB paths from the custom script.

Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine and file blocking

Security software may quarantine a legitimate file, particularly after a scan, migration, or partial reinstall. No file-specific false-positive campaign should be assumed, so verify the file and its owner before restoring anything.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check quarantine history

  1. Open Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Look for an event involving mpath.dll or the parent MATLAB application.
  5. Confirm that the original path is a legitimate MATLAB or trusted vendor directory.
  6. Restore or allow the file only when you recognize the product and the file’s publisher.
  7. Repair or reinstall the parent product afterward.

For third-party antivirus software, open its quarantine or detection history and follow the vendor’s restore process.

If the file appears in a temporary folder, a download folder, or an unfamiliar directory, do not restore it. Run a complete security scan and obtain the application from its official source.

Remove an NTFS block when appropriate

If the file came from a trusted installer and Windows has marked it as blocked:

  1. Right-click the file.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. On the General tab, look for an Unblock checkbox.
  4. Select it, choose Apply, and then OK.

Do this only for a file in the legitimate product directory. Unblocking an unknown DLL is not a repair.

Fix 6: Check dependencies when mpath.dll is present

A message that names mpath.dll does not always mean that mpath.dll itself is missing. The loader may be unable to load a dependency such as a Microsoft Visual C++ library or another MATLAB DLL.

This is especially likely when the error says an entry point could not be located. For example, an error involving mpsetdefaultIOFcns suggests that the DLL set is from incompatible releases.

  1. Record the complete error text.
  2. Record the executable path and the path of mpath.dll.
  3. Note any named MSVCR*.dll, VCRUNTIME*.dll, or other missing library.
  4. Repair or reinstall the owning MATLAB release or matching Runtime as a complete package.
  5. Do not download the named dependency from a DLL archive.
  6. If the error persists, send the collected details to MathWorks or the application vendor.

Installing Visual C++ Redistributables, DirectX, or .NET is not a general mpath.dll fix. Install one only when the error or the owning vendor specifically identifies it.

Fix 7: Check Windows components only when Windows has broader problems

mpath.dll is not a protected Windows system file, so SFC and DISM do not normally replace it. Use these tools when Windows itself also shows corruption, failed system components, broken updates, or unrelated protected-file errors.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
  4. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  5. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for it to finish.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Test the MATLAB application again.

If DISM or SFC reports that it repaired Windows components but mpath.dll is still missing, return to the MATLAB or MATLAB Runtime repair steps. These commands do not download a MathWorks DLL.

Manually repeating SFC and DISM can make it difficult to know what changed. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for broader Windows issues and show what needs attention, while its full version performs repairs; it is optional, and reinstalling the MATLAB-based application remains the definitive fix for this file.

Fix 8: Update the host application or its drivers only when relevant

A vendor may have released an update that corrects an embedded MATLAB runtime or an application loader problem. Check the application’s official update mechanism before changing unrelated Windows components.

Driver updates are relevant only if the failing software depends on a device driver and the error also identifies that driver or the device stops working. Device Manager cannot restore mpath.dll.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To inspect drivers:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters, Ports, or Imaging devices.
  4. Right-click the device.
  5. Select Properties.
  6. Open the Driver tab.
  7. Check the provider, date, and version.
  8. Use Update Driver only when the device or software vendor supplies a compatible driver.
  9. Restart Windows and test the application.

Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of hunting through many driver versions, and its free scan identifies outdated drivers while installation requires the full version; it is optional and cannot replace reinstalling the MATLAB-based application when that is the actual cause.

What not to do

Do not copy mpath.dll into System32 or SysWOW64

That does not install MATLAB and can cause Windows or another application to load the wrong version. MATLAB libraries belong with the release that owns them.

Do not use regsvr32 as a generic DLL repair

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose COM self-registration functions such as DllRegisterServer. There is no evidence that MATLAB’s mpath.dll is a COM self-registering component.

Do not run:

regsvr32 mpath.dll

A “DllRegisterServer entry point was not found” message would not repair MATLAB. It only confirms that registration is not the appropriate operation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not use random DLL download sites

A standalone file may have the wrong version, wrong architecture, altered contents, or missing companion libraries. Even a genuine file can create an incompatible mixture of MATLAB releases.

Use the official MathWorks installer, the matching MATLAB Runtime package, or the owning application’s official installer instead.

When System Restore is reasonable

System Restore is a fallback, not a replacement for the correct installer. Consider it when:

  • mpath.dll disappeared immediately after a known system change.
  • The owning installer is unavailable.
  • A restore point predates the change.
  • You understand that applications, drivers, and updates installed after that point may be affected.

Open Control Panel, search for Recovery, select Open System Restore, and choose a restore point before the failure. If System Restore does not resolve the problem, reinstall the owning MATLAB product or Runtime.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Final escalation checklist

If the error remains, collect this information before contacting MathWorks or the software vendor:

  • The complete error message.
  • The executable name and full path.
  • The full path shown for mpath.dll.
  • Whether the application is full MATLAB, MATLAB Runtime, or a third-party MATLAB-based program.
  • The required MATLAB release and the installed Runtime release.
  • Whether the program is 32-bit or 64-bit.
  • Whether mpath.dll exists and what its file properties show.
  • Any named dependency or entry-point function.
  • Recent antivirus, update, migration, uninstall, or cleanup events.
  • Whether the application works from its official shortcut but not from a custom launcher.

A legitimate mpath.dll should be repaired as part of its owning MATLAB installation or matching Runtime. The reliable solution is to restore that complete, compatible installation rather than treating the file as an independent Windows component.

FAQ

Is mpath.dll a Windows file?

No. It is associated with MATLAB Path Library components from The MathWorks, Inc. It is not a normal System32 or SysWOW64 file.

Can I download mpath.dll by itself?

That is unsafe and generally ineffective. There is no separate official MathWorks mpath.dll download. Install or reinstall the complete MATLAB product or matching MATLAB Runtime instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need full MATLAB?

Not necessarily. A compiled application may require only MATLAB Runtime. Check the application documentation or vendor support information to identify the MATLAB release used to compile it.

Why does the error say an entry point is missing?

That usually indicates incompatible DLLs from different MATLAB releases, an incomplete installation, or an incorrect path taking precedence. Reinstall the matching package as a set rather than replacing only mpath.dll.

Should I run SFC or DISM?

Run DISM followed by SFC when Windows also has broader component problems. Neither command is a primary repair for a missing MATLAB DLL.

Should I register mpath.dll?

No. regsvr32 is not a generic DLL installation command, and there is no evidence that mpath.dll is a COM self-registering component.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can multiple MATLAB Runtime releases be installed?

Yes. Different compiled applications may require different releases. Do not remove all Runtime versions unless you have confirmed that no installed application needs them.
