Check the current notice in the Xbox app or on the game’s Xbox listing before assuming the title is still included.

If the Game Pass entitlement has ended, you can no longer launch the subscription copy unless you purchase the game or regain access through another valid entitlement. Removing a Game Pass license is not the same as deleting your local or cloud save. The important distinction is between the right to launch the game and the save data associated with your Xbox profile.
The safest purchase for an existing Xbox save
For a player who started through Game Pass on Xbox or the Microsoft Store version for PC, the lowest-risk continuity choice is the Xbox/Microsoft Store edition. The official Xbox listing identifies the game as supporting Xbox cloud saves, Xbox achievements, and Xbox Play Anywhere. Those features place the purchase and the subscription version in the same Xbox account ecosystem.

Buy the Xbox edition with the same Microsoft account that held the Game Pass access. Then launch the purchased copy while signed in to the same Xbox profile. The entitlement changes from temporary subscription access to a paid license for that edition; it does not require you to start over merely because you bought the game.
Cloud-save support is a documented capability, not a promise that every possible failure can be repaired. A deleted save, a damaged synchronization, an account mismatch, or an unusual platform error may still prevent recovery. That is why you should verify the save before removing anything.
How to protect and verify your save before buying
- Open the game through your current Game Pass installation. Confirm that the profile shown in the Xbox interface is the one you normally use. Do not switch Microsoft accounts while checking progress.
- Load your latest save and create a fresh save if the game allows it. Wait until you have returned to the main menu or otherwise completed the game’s normal save operation. Avoid forcing a shutdown during that process.
- Close the game normally. A clean exit gives the Xbox cloud-save system an opportunity to synchronize. If the Xbox interface shows a synchronization or pending-upload message, wait for it to finish before proceeding.
- Purchase the Xbox/Microsoft Store edition under the same account. Confirm the account shown at checkout and in the Xbox app. A purchase made on a different Microsoft account will not merge profiles.
- Install or launch the purchased edition without uninstalling the existing installation first. Let the game complete any save synchronization prompt. If it asks you to choose between local and cloud data, do not select an option casually; choose the copy that contains your latest confirmed progress.
- Load the save and check several milestones. Verify your current mission, unlocked equipment, and any other progress that you recognize. Only after this check should you remove the old installation or change devices.
If the purchased copy opens at an earlier point, stop playing long enough to determine whether synchronization is still in progress. Repeatedly launching, saving, and quitting across two devices can make it harder to identify which copy is current.
Will Xbox achievements stay?
The Xbox edition lists Xbox achievements as a feature. Achievements are attached to your Xbox profile, so buying the Xbox/Microsoft Store edition with that same profile keeps you in the same achievement system. Previously earned achievements should remain associated with the account rather than being reset by the change from subscription access to ownership.
Buying the game does not automatically grant achievements you have not earned. Continue the relevant missions or requirements in the purchased copy, and allow the Xbox service to connect so newly earned achievements can register.
Do not treat Steam achievements as an extension of Xbox achievements. Steam has its own achievement list and account system. An achievement earned on Xbox should not be assumed to unlock automatically on Steam, and an achievement earned on Steam should not be assumed to appear on Xbox.

There is no reliable, title-specific guarantee that a Game Pass save will transfer to Steam. The two editions advertise different cloud systems: Xbox cloud saves on the Xbox side and Steam Cloud on the Steam side. Community discussions report partial or inconsistent behavior when players try to move progress between the Microsoft Store/Xbox version and Steam.
That inconsistency can have several causes: different save locations, account identifiers, file formats, or game builds. A save that appears to work on one PC may fail after an update or may load without every piece of progression. Because the available transfer reports are anecdotal rather than an official support commitment, plan as though Steam is a new platform.
If you decide to move anyway
- Keep the Xbox/Microsoft Store installation and its saves intact until the Steam version is confirmed to work.
- Do not overwrite a known-good save with an unverified file.
- Record your current mission, unlocks, and achievement status so you can identify missing progress.
- Use Steam Cloud only after the local Steam save has loaded correctly; cloud synchronization can propagate an incorrect or empty save.

Several situations can look like data loss without being the same problem:
- Wrong account: You bought or launched under a different Microsoft account than the one used for Game Pass.
- Unsynchronized progress: The final session ended before the newest save reached the cloud.
- Different edition: You launched Steam instead of the Xbox/Microsoft Store edition and expected the other platform’s save to appear.
- Temporary service or installation issue: The game may fail to display synchronized data until the account reconnects or the installation is repaired.
- Actual damage or deletion: Cloud saves are a feature, not an absolute recovery guarantee for every exceptional case.
Do not uninstall the old copy as your first troubleshooting step. Preserve the installation and any local data while confirming the account, platform, and synchronization state.

A March 26, 2026 report from TrueAchievements said Act 2 would add five new missions and additional Xbox achievements. The report described the update as free for owners and Game Pass players, noted that the Steam launch came first, and said the Xbox release would follow. It did not establish one universal release date for every platform or region.
That means an Act 2 mission or achievement can appear on Steam before it appears in the Xbox edition, or vice versa, depending on the rollout. Before concluding that content is missing, check the current Xbox listing, the game’s update history, and the version installed on your device. Do not assume that a delay is caused by your save or by the Game Pass change.
Buying decision by player type
You played on an Xbox console
Buy the Xbox edition with the same Xbox profile if you want the strongest continuity for your save and achievements. The listing’s Xbox cloud-save and Xbox achievement labels directly match the systems you have been using.
You played through the Xbox app on PC
Use the same Microsoft account and select the Xbox/Microsoft Store edition if preserving that progress matters more than moving your library to Steam. Verify the save in the purchased copy before uninstalling the subscription installation.
You want to switch permanently to Steam
Choose Steam for its separate PC ownership and Steam account features, but budget for uncertain save migration and separate achievements. Keep the Xbox copy available until you have tested whatever transfer method you intend to use.
You have not started the game yet
Choose the platform you expect to use long term. The decision is simpler without an existing save: Xbox keeps you in the Xbox achievement and cloud-save ecosystem, while Steam keeps progress in Steam’s systems.

- Check that you purchased the same edition family rather than assuming all PC storefront versions share saves.
- Restart the Xbox app or console only after any synchronization prompt has completed.
- Load the newest save you explicitly verified before the purchase.
- If progress is missing, stop creating new saves and document the mission and unlocks you last saw.
- Check the current service and game update status before treating a delayed sync as permanent loss.
Prices, discounts, regional availability, and the exact Game Pass catalog status can change. The Xbox app’s current listing is more authoritative for those volatile details than an older announcement or community post.
Bottom line for the purchase choice
For existing Game Pass progress, the same-account Xbox/Microsoft Store purchase is the documented continuity path: it keeps the game in the Xbox ecosystem that advertises cloud saves, Xbox achievements, and Xbox Play Anywhere.
