When you see “Abyss Cores” in a guide or video, it refers to the same general system. PC Gamer uses that alternate label while explaining how to slot the items; the mechanics guide uses “Abyss Gears.”
What you need before slotting one
An equipment socket must be unlocked
An Abyss Gear cannot be embedded into a locked socket. Socket access is a property of the equipment, so obtaining a gear alone is not enough. Open the item’s socket state first, then return to the witch for the embed operation. If the game does not present an embed option, the most likely first check is whether the equipment socket is still locked.
A witch is the service provider
Witches handle the system’s practical operations. The current guide identifies them as the place to unlock sockets and to embed or extract gears. That disagreement makes a specific chapter an unreliable universal instruction. Use the Witch of Wisdom quest and the in-game journal as your progression cue instead. When the journal introduces the relevant witch services, follow its objective text and interact with the witch it identifies.
How to equip an Abyss Gear
Use this sequence whenever you want to put a gear into equipment. The labels can vary slightly with platform or localization, but the order is consistent with the documented mechanics.
- Choose the equipment. Select the weapon, armor piece, or other compatible item you want to modify. Inspect its socket information before spending time on the gear itself.
- Unlock the socket. Take the equipment to a witch and use the socket-unlocking service shown in the witch’s interaction menu. An item with a locked socket will not accept an Abyss Gear until this step is complete. The available sources do not specify a universal unlock fee or a single material cost, so rely on the amount displayed in your current game.
- Open the witch’s gear-management service. With the socket unlocked, choose the option to embed or slot an Abyss Gear. Witches are the documented interface for this action.

- Check the finished item. Reopen the equipment information and confirm both the socket status and the added effect. This check catches the common mistake of selecting an item but leaving the final confirmation unaccepted.
The important prerequisite is the socket, not a particular character level stated by the sources. If your journal has not introduced the Witch of Wisdom service, continue the indicated quest progression rather than assuming that an unopened menu is a bug.
How to remove a gear and move it to another item
Existing equipment can carry Abyss Gears, and those gears can be extracted and moved to other equipment. The documented workflow is extract first, embed second; it is not described as a one-click transfer between two items.
- Bring the equipped item to a witch. Open the witch’s gear-management options and select the item that currently contains the gear.
- Choose extraction. Use the extract or remove command and read the confirmation window. How crafting works at a witch
Find a recipe before attempting to craft

A recipe discovery is therefore a prerequisite for recipe-based crafting; opening the witch’s menu without a discovered recipe may show no craftable entry or fewer entries than expected. Check your journal and inventory for the recipe, then return to the witch.

Use the witch’s crafting services
The current mechanics guide says witches can craft basic Abyss Gears. At the witch, open the crafting service, select a discovered recipe, review the ingredients and any cost displayed by the game, and confirm only after checking the result. The available documentation does not provide a complete ingredient table, fixed currency price, required quantity, or recipe list. Those values may differ by recipe and can change with updates, so the in-game crafting panel is the authoritative place to read them.
Merge gears for special variants
The same guide also describes merging multiple gears into special variants. This is separate from making a basic gear from a recipe: you provide the required existing gears in the merge interface, review the resulting variant, and confirm the operation. “Embed” is unavailable
Check the equipment’s socket. A locked socket must be unlocked through a witch before embedding is possible. If the socket is open but the option is still missing, confirm that the item is the one selected in the witch’s menu and that the gear is present in your inventory.
The witch offers no crafting recipe
Verify that you have found the recipe rather than merely hearing about the item. PC Gamer’s description ties crafting to discovered recipes. Also check the Witch of Wisdom quest and journal progression; the service may not be available until that progression has introduced it.

You cannot find a gear after extraction
Finish the extraction confirmation and inspect the inventory category used for Abyss Gears. If the gear is not there, reopen the source equipment’s socket panel and check whether the operation completed. Do not begin another craft or merge until the original gear’s status is clear.
The result is different from what you expected
Read the effect in the confirmation screen before embedding or merging. The documented system can grant different effects, including skills, and the sources do not establish a standard bonus shared by all gears. Item-specific text is more reliable than a general expectation.
You are unsure when the system unlocks
