Where the chimney task begins
The chimney objective is part of the Actions Speak Louder than Words quest. Start by speaking with the couple outside the house producing the smoke. The broom required for the task is an in-game item placed beside the house, near the front door; you do not need to find or buy a real-world chimney tool.

Step-by-step: sweep the chimney

Talk to the couple
Speak to the couple outside the smoky house to activate the task. If the objective has not started, the chimney interaction will not be available.

Pick up and equip the broom
Collect the broom beside the front door. Open the inventory or tool-selection interface and equip it. The exact menu label can differ with your platform, control scheme, or current configuration.

Climb onto the roof
Use the boxes near the house or follow the climbable route around the back or right side. Either route leads to the roof; use whichever path is accessible in your position.

Stand directly on the chimney
Move onto the top of the chimney itself, aligning your character over the opening. Standing on the roof beside the chimney may leave the interaction prompt unavailable.

Aim into the opening and sweep
Point the broom down into the chimney opening, then activate the sweep or attack action shown on screen. The downward aim is important: striking the chimney from the side can produce a hit animation instead of completing the cleaning interaction.

Return to the couple
After the cleaning interaction finishes, climb down and speak to the couple again. This completes the objective and advances the quest.
Control examples by input method
Button assignments are not universal. The examples below are the mappings shown in walkthroughs, but your platform, patch, accessibility settings, or remapped controls may use different inputs. Treat the on-screen prompt as authoritative.

How to position the character correctly
Use the chimney opening as your alignment point
The interaction is location-sensitive. Your character needs to be on the chimney, not merely close to it. Move until your feet are over the chimney top, then adjust the camera so the opening is clearly visible below the broom.

Aim downward before activating the action
Once positioned, angle the broom into the opening. Activating the attack or sweep input while facing the chimney wall can make the character hit the structure without triggering the cleaning animation.
Wait for the interaction to finish
Do not climb down immediately after the first movement or impact animation. Confirm that the sweep interaction has completed, then return to the couple. If the quest objective has not advanced, reposition and try the aim step again.

The character hits the chimney instead of sweeping
- Move farther onto the chimney so you are over the opening rather than beside it.
- Tilt the camera and broom downward into the opening.
- Only then activate the prompted sweep or attack action.
A side-facing strike indicates that the position or aim is wrong, not that a different physical item is required.
The interaction prompt does not appear
- Climb onto the chimney itself; standing on an adjacent roof tile may not count.
- Make sure the broom is equipped, not merely picked up.
- Move slightly and reacquire the opening with the camera so the game can detect the interaction point.
The listed button does not work
Control examples vary between keyboard and controller setups. Open your active bindings, select the broom through the assigned tool-selection command, and use the sweep prompt that appears after you aim. A remapped control can make CTRL, F2, a bumper, or a D-pad direction differ from the examples above.

Return to the original couple and speak with them. Cleaning the chimney is an objective within the quest, not the final conversation by itself. If the couple does not respond with the completion dialogue, verify that the sweep animation finished and that you interacted with the correct pair outside the smoky house.
What the quest reward is used for
Completing the objective contributes to Actions Speak Louder than Words. The quest reward includes Hernandian Attire, which is used to enter Hernand Castle. That makes the chimney task a progression step rather than an optional environmental activity.
