Start with the opening story missions until you understand the basic combat, travel and camp loop, then alternate main objectives with nearby exploration. Activate travel points, collect useful upgrade materials and Sealed Abyss Artifacts, complete nearby faction quests that solve practical problems such as inventory space, and invest in Greymane Camp as it becomes available. This rhythm gives you context without turning the first session into either a rigid checklist or a blind rush through Pywel.
Crimson Desert is an open-world action-adventure built around Kliff’s attempt to reunite the scattered Greymane comrades and rebuild the faction. Because the game supports different weapons, skills and equipment choices, there is no universally correct opening build or route.

What to do first in Crimson Desert
- Follow the opening main missions. Stay with the story long enough to learn the core combat, traversal and camp systems and to establish Greymane Camp.
- Explore the area around each story objective. On the way, activate Hidden Bells and Fast Travel Points, gather useful refinement or upgrade materials, and inspect nearby discoverables.
- Take useful local side content. Faction quests are worth prioritizing when they improve a practical capability, such as inventory capacity, rather than because a guide labels them mandatory.
- Return to the story when the detours stop paying off. Use unlocked fast travel to reduce backtracking, but do not teleport through every unexplored region.
- Upgrade for the problems you actually encounter. Choose skills, weapons and equipment that fit your preferred range, timing and mobility instead of chasing an unverified “best” early build.
This is a sensible first-session framework, not an official required order. Pearl Abyss describes the game’s combat philosophy this way: “On the unforgiving battlefields of Crimson Desert, there is no single path to victory.” The official page presents skill, weapon and equipment growth as choices rather than a single progression track (Pearl Abyss official Crimson Desert page).

Why a story-and-exploration rhythm works
The opening story gives the systems context. It also provides a reason to learn how the Greymanes operate and why camp matters. If you sprint through only the main objectives, you may unlock the plot while missing the convenience systems that make later travel and resource management less frustrating. If you ignore the story and roam immediately, you can encounter activities without knowing which ones support your current capabilities.
#1 Best Overall
- Join Kliff, captain of the Greymanes, and his comrades as they embark on a relentless journey to defend Pywel and fulfill their mission.
- Along your perilous path stands both dependable allies and countless foes who will stop at nothing to see your downfall.
- Face trials to uncover the truth of the catastrophe looming over Pywel and restore peace to the continent.
- Explore the mesmerizing landscapes of the continent where mystical beings, hidden treasures, and thrilling adventures await.
- Pre-order to receive the Khaled Shield (Pre Order Code on Receipt). PS5 Editions include the Grotevant Plate Set DLC as a PS5 exclusive bonus. (In Pack DLC Voucher). Bonus DLC Includes: Grotevan Plate Helm, Grotevan Plate Armor, along with Grotevan cloak, gloves, and boots!
A practical compromise is to treat every new story destination as a small exploration opportunity. Clear the objective, then spend a few minutes checking nearby paths, travel points, materials and local quests. Once the useful activities are exhausted or the next story marker is far away, continue the main quest. PowerPyx recommends a similar approach: activate Hidden Bells and Fast Travel Points, uncover map information, gather refinement materials and Sealed Abyss Artifacts, then continue the story and pursue faction quests as desired (PowerPyx strategy guide). That is a guide recommendation, not a developer-mandated sequence.
How to decide between story, exploration and side quests
| What you are doing | Choose it when | What it solves |
|---|---|---|
| Main-story mission | You have learned the nearby systems, or local detours no longer offer an obvious practical benefit. | Advances context and can open additional systems or destinations. |
| Nearby exploration | You are already traveling through an unfamiliar area. | Reveals routes, travel points, materials, discoverables and local activities. |
| Faction quest | It is nearby and its reward improves a current limitation, such as carrying capacity. | Improves quality of life without requiring a completionist detour. |
| Fast travel | You have already discovered the route and are returning for a known objective. | Reduces repetitive travel time. |
There is no evidence for a universally optimal percentage split between story and optional content. Use a simple test: if a detour gives you a travel unlock, a material you can use soon, a Sealed Abyss Artifact, or a convenience upgrade, take it. If it is pulling you far away from the current region without solving a problem, mark it mentally and return later.
Fast travel without losing the point of exploration
Unlock points while you are already passing through
When a story route enters a new area, look for Hidden Bells and Fast Travel Points before leaving. PowerPyx’s map-first advice specifically combines travel-point activation with uncovering map information and gathering refinement materials. This costs little compared with making a separate return trip and gives you a reliable way back to the region.

After a point is active, fast travel is the efficient choice for revisiting a known location, turning in a quest or collecting a prepared reward. On a first visit, traveling organically can reveal materials, local quests and routes that a map jump would bypass. The useful balance is therefore “discover once, teleport when repeating,” rather than either walking everywhere or skipping every side path.
What to do if a destination cannot be reached instantly
- Confirm that you activated the destination’s travel point rather than merely seeing it on the map.
- Check whether you are in a state that blocks the travel action, such as an active encounter or another contextual activity.
- If the trip is short and unexplored, travel there normally and use the journey to gather materials and reveal the map.
Do not assume every travel restriction is a bug. Availability can depend on the game state, and mechanics may change in later patches.
Greymane Camp is progression, not a distraction
Camp development has a direct storage benefit. In Pearl Abyss’ version 1.02.00 notes, revised April 4, 2026, Greymane Camp has five expansion stages. Private storage scales from 240 slots at the starting point to a maximum of 1,000 slots as the camp is expanded (Pearl Abyss version 1.02.00 patch notes). The notes establish the starting and maximum totals, but do not provide the capacity for each individual stage, so those intermediate numbers should not be guessed.
That storage increase changes how aggressively you can collect materials and equipment. Early on, keep enough space for quest items and upgrade resources instead of treating every pickup as permanently valuable. As camp improvements become available, use the extra capacity to reduce the number of trips devoted solely to inventory management.
When to prioritize a camp-related task
- Prioritize it when your inventory is repeatedly full during normal exploration.
- Prioritize nearby faction content if its reward increases inventory size or removes another recurring convenience problem.
- Delay a distant camp detour when it would abandon an active story area with unopened travel points or useful materials.
The goal is not to max the camp before doing anything else. It is to make camp growth part of the ordinary loop so that exploration becomes easier rather than a separate endgame project.
Movement controls: Basic versus Classic
If movement feels awkward, check the movement setting before changing your whole play style. Pearl Abyss’ version 1.02.00 notes, dated April 4, 2026, describe two options:
| Setting | Acceleration input | Mount stamina note |
|---|---|---|
| Basic | Hold the sprint input to accelerate. | Stamina consumption differs from Classic. |
| Classic | Press sprint repeatedly to accelerate. | Stamina consumption differs from Basic. |
Choose the one that matches how you naturally control movement, especially during long rides or repeated repositioning in combat. These details are specific to the cited 1.02.00 patch record; later updates may alter the behavior, so consult newer official notes if your menu no longer matches it.
Abyss Nexus movement limitation
The same patch note says Abyss Nexus use was improved for slight movement, while remaining unavailable in certain situations, including when mounted or using Flight at that time. If the option appears unusable, first dismount and leave Flight before assuming the feature is broken. This is a versioned condition, not a promise that every future patch will preserve the same restriction.

What to collect while exploring
Upgrade and refinement materials
Gather materials encountered on a story route when they are practical to carry. PowerPyx specifically calls out refinement materials as part of its recommended map-and-travel routine. You do not need to clear every resource node before advancing; collect enough to support upgrades you can make now, then continue while the route is convenient.
Sealed Abyss Artifacts
Sealed Abyss Artifacts are another reason to inspect nearby areas rather than following only the next marker. Treat them as exploration rewards to collect when they are close to your path. Avoid promising a particular build benefit unless a current item description or guide confirms it; the available evidence supports collecting them, not a universal opening priority order.

Local discoverables and quests
Map information, local activities and faction objectives become more valuable when they overlap. A short detour that reveals a travel point and starts a nearby faction quest is usually more efficient than a long expedition for a single unverified collectible.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Build and skill choices without a fake “best” answer
Crimson Desert’s official presentation emphasizes combinations of skills, weapons and equipment rather than one mandatory build. Your first upgrades should answer a problem you can name: difficulty closing distance, trouble surviving a particular attack pattern, unreliable stamina management, or insufficient damage with your preferred weapon.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteA practical decision framework
- Keep the weapon you understand. Familiar timing is more valuable than a theoretical damage advantage you cannot use consistently.
- Buy utility when it removes friction. A mobility, defense or resource option that solves a repeated mistake can outperform a narrowly stronger attack.
- Change one variable at a time. If you replace a weapon, several skills and equipment together, you will not know which change helped.
- Revisit choices after new systems open. Early decisions should be treated as experiments, not permanent declarations of your play style.
PC Gamer maintains a guide hub covering topics such as skills, bosses and confusing interface elements, but detailed stat trade-offs require a current build-specific source. Do not treat a generic “best skills” list as universally optimal.
Controller or keyboard and mouse?
A controller is optional. PC Gamer’s guide author recommended controller play because they found the keyboard-and-mouse controls awkward (PC Gamer Crimson Desert guide). That is one author’s preference, not an official requirement or evidence that every player will perform better on a controller.
Use whichever input makes camera control, sprinting and combat timing comfortable. If the default movement rhythm feels wrong, test Basic and Classic before buying new hardware or rebuilding your controls. A short practice session in a safe area is a better test than judging the entire game from the first few minutes.
How large is Pywel, really?
PowerPyx’s March 19, 2026 strategy-guide hub describes a 90 km² world and more than 300 hours of expected content. Those are PowerPyx estimates; the page does not provide an original publisher citation or methodology, and the figures are not guarantees of how long your playthrough will take. Use them to set expectations about scale, not as a completion requirement.

Common first-session mistakes and fixes
Rushing only the main quest
Symptom: You reach new objectives while repeatedly running out of storage or retracing routes. Fix: On the next story trip, activate nearby travel points, collect practical materials and complete a close faction quest that improves convenience.
Trying to clear the entire map immediately
Symptom: The story loses momentum and your inventory fills with items you cannot yet use. Fix: Limit each detour to activities that solve a current problem or lie directly along the route. Mark distant discoveries mentally and return after more systems open.
Assuming a guide route is mandatory
Symptom: You abandon a comfortable weapon or skip an interesting area because a guide lists a different order. Fix: Treat named guide recommendations as options. Keep the principles—travel-point activation, useful materials, camp investment and nearby faction quests—while adapting the order to your play style.
Blaming combat for a movement-control problem
Symptom: Sprint acceleration or mount stamina feels inconsistent. Fix: Check whether Basic or Classic is selected and test the other setting. The two modes use different sprint inputs and consume mount stamina differently in version 1.02.00.
A repeatable loop after the opening
- Read the next story objective and identify the region it uses.
- Travel there, activating any Hidden Bell or Fast Travel Point encountered.
- Collect nearby refinement materials and Sealed Abyss Artifacts without detouring far from the route.
- Accept a local faction quest when its reward addresses inventory or another immediate convenience issue.
- Complete the story objective, then return through fast travel if you have a known follow-up task.
- Spend camp resources and adjust skills or equipment only after identifying the problem the change should solve.
This loop keeps the narrative moving, steadily improves travel and storage, and leaves room for spontaneous discoveries. It also avoids claiming that one build, route or completion order is best for everyone.
