But that report covers only the opening portion, not the full game. Phil Hornshaw’s PlayStation Blog preview describes weapon-based fights, parries, traversal, puzzles, and small encounters around the starting region—useful evidence of what the game is trying to do, not a verdict on everything it offers.
What is Crimson Desert about?
Crimson Desert is an open-world action-adventure from Pearl Abyss, set on the continent of Pywel. Its story follows Kliff after the Black Bears ambush the Greymanes: he sets out to reunite the survivors and rebuild the faction. Pearl Abyss presents combat as open-ended, with players expanding their skills, weapons, and equipment rather than following one prescribed route to victory. “Medieval Musou” is a useful comparison for the preview’s crowded, physical fights, not the publisher’s genre label. Pearl Abyss calls the game an open-world action-adventure. Its launch announcement describes a world of wilderness, cities, ruins, and distinct cultures, alongside combat with swords, axes, spears, ranged weapons, hand-to-hand moves, kicks, and grapples. Climbing and gliding are among the listed traversal mechanics. The publisher’s launch announcement gives those official details.
What the four-hour preview found in combat
In a March 4, 2026 PlayStation Blog report, contributor Phil Hornshaw said he played about four hours in the opening portion, spending much of that time around Hernand. He found combat built around a growing set of moves and choices of weapon rather than the character classes or builds he expected. That is an observation from his early hands-on session, not a definitive description of every system in the full game.

Weapons, timing, and crowds
Hornshaw reports that Kliff begins with a sword and shield; he also encountered great swords, spears, and axes. Fights combine fast and slower strikes with grabs and throws, blocking, and timed parries. Enemies may try to surround Kliff, so the battles ask players to respond to threats around them rather than simply attack one target. In the preview, new skills added moves to Kliff’s repertoire, while changing weapons altered how he approached a fight.
A boss and the Abyss
The preview’s sample boss, Kailock the Hornsplitter, uses an Abyss Artifact to move quickly and send magical weapon waves at Kliff. Hornshaw says the encounter rewarded reading the opponent, parrying, and choosing stronger attacks. The report describes Abyss Artifacts as objects that can unlock upgrades and abilities. A brief trip into the Abyss also showed abilities being used for puzzles, manipulating objects, exploration, and combat.
Does exploration offer more than spectacle?
In the opening area, Hornshaw encountered townspeople’s quests and outlaw-held locations that could be cleared, after which local activity returned. He also reports that Kliff can learn some moves by observing others, including during combat. The preview found incidental encounters and loot during ordinary travel alongside more structured quests and puzzles, giving the world activities beyond simply moving between major landmarks.

Traversal in the report includes climbing, gliding, swimming, sprinting, and horseback travel, with stamina affecting movement. These details make the game’s scale feel connected to things the player can do in the world, but the preview did not establish how these systems develop across the full map. Hornshaw says he did not get far beyond the opening area and a short trip into the Abyss. His account is a window into the early game, not a comprehensive exploration review.

Crimson Desert launched worldwide on March 19, 2026. Pearl Abyss’ launch notice lists PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam, Apple Mac, Epic Games Store, and ROG Xbox Ally. The publisher says voice acting is available in English, Korean, and Chinese, with subtitles in 14 languages. These are publisher-reported launch details; check the relevant regional storefront for current availability.
Hornshaw’s PS5 hands-on also discusses PS5 and PS5 Pro optimization and describes DualSense haptics during weapon clashes and adaptive triggers while drawing a bow. Those are the contributor’s impressions of the PS5 preview, not comparative performance measurements. The available reporting does not establish comparative frame rates or resolution across platforms, or identify a definitive best version. If choosing where to play, rely on the platform you own and any specific features that matter to you rather than assuming one version is technically superior.

What can—and can’t—the preview tell you?
The evidence supports a measured answer to “Is it a mirage?” The spectacle has recognizable gameplay beneath it: the hands-on account describes varied weapons and combat responses, movement across the environment, quests, puzzles, and encounters during travel. But about four hours in the opening area cannot show how consistently those systems work later, how the full world holds up, or whether the game sustains its variety over a complete playthrough. Treat the report as a concrete early look, not a review of the finished experience.
For context on the game’s release, Pearl Abyss announced its March 19, 2026 date in a September 24, 2025 PlayStation Blog post by Chief Operations Officer Dong-won Lee. The game has since launched; the original preview’s value now is its specific account of what the opening hours contained.
