After about 90 minutes with Crimson Desert on PS5 Pro, my verdict is encouraging but deliberately limited: the opening areas look like an impressive open-world showcase, and Performance mode felt close to a smooth 60fps. Texture pop-in and weak close-range foliage remain visible, however, and this short session cannot prove a locked 60fps across the full campaign. This is a PS5 Pro first impression—not a base-PS5, PC or complete technical benchmark.
What I tested
The session took place on PS5 Pro and lasted approximately 90 minutes. I played through the prologue and into the first major town and open-world section, using Performance mode in practice. The game also offers Quality and Balanced modes.

I did not test the base PS5, Xbox consoles or PC, and I did not reach late-game regions, the largest battles or demanding boss encounters. There was no capture hardware or frame-time analysis, so the 60fps observation below describes how the game looked and felt rather than a measured frame-rate floor. The hands-on report was published March 21, 2026, so it should not be treated as a review of later patches. (Tom’s Guide hands-on report)
How Crimson Desert looks on PS5 Pro
Scale is the immediate strength
Crimson Desert is an open-world action-adventure RPG set on Pywel. You play Kliff, a member of the Greymanes trying to reunite the faction after an ambush. Exploration, combat, traversal and environmental activities all feed into a world designed to be viewed from a distance. (Pearl Abyss)
#1 Best Overall
- Join Kliff, captain of the Greymanes, and his comrades as they embark on a relentless journey to defend Pywel and fulfill their mission.
- Along your perilous path stands both dependable allies and countless foes who will stop at nothing to see your downfall.
- Face trials to uncover the truth of the catastrophe looming over Pywel and restore peace to the continent.
- Explore the mesmerizing landscapes of the continent where mystical beings, hidden treasures, and thrilling adventures await.
- Pre-order to receive the Khaled Shield (Pre Order Code on Receipt). PS5 Editions include the Grotevant Plate Set DLC as a PS5 exclusive bonus. (In Pack DLC Voucher). Bonus DLC Includes: Grotevan Plate Helm, Grotevan Plate Armor, along with Grotevan cloak, gloves, and boots!
That scale comes through quickly. White-rock cliffs, rivers, forests and distant scenery create strong vistas, while the opening town feels busy with NPCs and imposing guard-like enemies. Horseback movement and scenic exposition make the best case for the hardware: the world often reads as a connected landscape rather than a series of small levels.
The image is not flawless
Texture pop-in recurs, particularly as new geometry and surfaces stream into view. Foliage that looks convincing at distance can appear thin or unconvincing up close. Performance mode also trades some image resolution for responsiveness. I cannot attach an exact resolution figure to that compromise because the hands-on material does not state internal resolutions, reconstruction targets or ray-tracing settings.
Graphics modes and what each is for
The three selectable modes are useful because they acknowledge that no single presentation suits every display or player. Their precise technical targets are not published in the hands-on report.
| Mode | Priority | What is established | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Quality | Image fidelity | Exact resolution, frame-rate target and ray-tracing configuration: not stated | Players who value scenery and accept a lower frame rate |
| Balanced | A compromise between clarity and smoothness | Exact targets: not stated | Players for whom Quality feels slow and Performance looks too soft |
| Performance | Responsiveness | Felt close to 60fps during the opening session; no frame-time measurement | Combat- and camera-movement-focused players |
On a large 4K screen viewed from nearby, Quality may make distant detail easier to appreciate. On a 60Hz or 120Hz display, Performance makes camera pans and combat feel more immediate. Balanced is the sensible starting point if you are sensitive to either softness or uneven motion. A VRR display can improve perceived smoothness when frame delivery is not perfectly even, but it does not turn the game into a 120fps title.

Does Performance mode really hold 60fps?
For the first 90 minutes, Performance mode looked and felt close to 60fps, with few obvious hitches during traversal and the early encounters I played. That is a positive launch-window impression, not evidence of a locked 60fps.
Several distinctions matter:
- Average smoothness: the opening movement and combat were generally fluid.
- Brief hitches: occasional traversal interruptions are different from sustained drops.
- Frame pacing and latency: neither was measured with capture equipment.
- Stress conditions: the session did not include the biggest battles, late-game systems or difficult bosses where performance could change.
Uncontrolled forum reports describe drops, image artifacts and severe slowdowns in particular situations, including discussions on Whirlpool and ResetEra. Those posts are anecdotal and cannot establish how often the problems occur or which patch produced them.
What PS5 Pro contributes
Sony lists Crimson Desert among PS5 Pro-enhanced games and among titles supporting its enhanced PSSR image-quality feature. The console platform advertises PSSR reconstruction, advanced ray tracing, higher frame-rate support, 4K output and a 2TB SSD. These are platform capabilities, not a promise that every mode renders natively at 4K or that every scene reaches a particular frame rate. (Sony’s PS5 Pro overview)
PlayStation’s developer-focused preview says Pearl Abyss built the game around a very large world, PS5 SSD streaming, PS5 Pro High CPU Frequency Mode, Geometry Shader Oversubscription, NGG Culling, PSSR and ray-tracing features. That explains why long-distance detail and streaming are central technical goals, but it is an account of intended technology rather than independent benchmarking. (PlayStation Blog hands-on report)

DualSense support adds weight to combat
The official PlayStation preview describes haptic feedback for weapon clashes and powerful impacts, plus adaptive-trigger resistance while drawing a bow. These effects make attacks feel heavier, but they are separate from the PS5 Pro performance question and do not compensate for image-quality compromises. (PlayStation Blog)
What this says about base PS5
Nothing definitive. The hands-on session was conducted on PS5 Pro, and the author did not test the standard PS5. Do not read the smooth opening impression as a guarantee of equivalent image quality or frame-rate behavior on the base console. Any comparison with the standard machine should identify the other tester, game version and testing conditions rather than folding it into this result.
Practical fixes if your experience differs
Performance mode looks too soft
- Try Balanced mode and compare the same camera movement.
- Confirm 4K output, TV Game Mode and sensible sharpening settings.
- Check all three modes in both town and wilderness scenes.
Motion feels uneven
- Enable VRR if your display supports it.
- Verify the PS5 display settings are compatible with the television.
- Compare an interior, open wilderness and combat encounter instead of judging one traversal segment.
Pop-in or reconstruction artifacts distract you
- Install available game updates and compare modes again.
- Describe the artifact precisely—shimmering, ghosting, crawling edges or unstable foliage.
- Do not assume every artifact is caused by PSSR without comparative footage.
Is the PS5 Pro version worth choosing?
For an existing PS5 Pro owner with a 4K/VRR display, Performance mode is the most convincing starting point: it preserves the game’s large-scale spectacle while prioritizing responsive traversal and combat. Quality is preferable if distant detail matters more than motion, and Balanced is the safest compromise for an undecided player.
Buying a PS5 Pro solely for Crimson Desert is harder to justify. The console’s official feature set and 2TB storage are substantial, but this session does not prove campaign-wide 60fps performance, eliminate pop-in or establish a decisive advantage over a capable PC. Tom’s Guide cited a $749 PS5 Pro price in its March 21, 2026 article; treat that as the article’s figure rather than a current retailer quote. Check current pricing and availability before buying. Crimson Desert already looks like an ambitious PS5 Pro showcase. Its cliffs, rivers, forests, busy settlements and long sightlines create an excellent first impression, while Performance mode felt close to 60fps in the opening section. Texture pop-in, weak close-up foliage and unknown behavior in large later encounters keep that praise conditional. The evidence supports “strong early performance,” not “locked 60fps throughout.”
