Crimson Desert Performance Settings: What to Change for Smoother Gameplay

By VGSources Team 8 min read

For smoother Crimson Desert gameplay, tune in this order: keep the highest internal render resolution your system can sustain, set Lighting Quality to Cinematic or Ultra, test DLSS 4.0 (or an appropriate FSR 3/4 quality mode), and only then experiment with ray reconstruction, ray tracing and frame generation. This order preserves image quality while addressing the settings most likely to affect frame time, lighting noise and stutter.

What to change first on PC

Crimson Desert has no built-in benchmark tool. As DSOGaming editor John Papadopoulos put it, “Crimson Desert does not have a built-in benchmark tool.” That means a repeatable manual test is more useful than a single number from an online video. Use the same demanding outdoor traversal, a busy settlement and an indoor scene with difficult lighting. Change one option at a time, record average FPS and watch frame-time consistency rather than relying on the average alone.

Published results are observations from specific systems, resolutions, drivers, patches and scenes, not universal guarantees. The most reliable goal is a stable target with acceptable frame times, not the highest peak FPS in an easy area.

A sensible starting profile

  1. Start with the Cinematic preset.
  2. Set Lighting Quality to Cinematic. If your GPU has headroom, try Ultra; avoid Max until you have measured the cost.
  3. Use native resolution or the highest-quality upscaling mode that holds your target frame rate.
  4. On an NVIDIA GPU, compare DLSS 4.0 with DLSS 4.5 and keep the cleaner result. Testing reported cleaner or less-flickery output from 4.0 in the builds examined.
  5. On an AMD GPU, use the highest FSR 3 or FSR 4 quality mode your card can sustain.
  6. Leave ray tracing enabled for the first comparison. In DSOGaming’s test it changed performance by only about 3–4 FPS, so it was not the largest initial lever.
  7. Test ray reconstruction or ray regeneration separately, then enable frame generation only after the base render rate is stable.

The in-game preview is useful while making these changes. TechRadar reports that DLSS and FSR frame generation can be toggled without restarting, so you can compare a camera pan or traversal route immediately.

Why internal resolution and lighting quality matter most

Internal render resolution controls lighting samples

Crimson Desert’s lighting sample count follows the internal render resolution. Dropping from native rendering to an aggressive Performance upscaling mode therefore does more than soften geometry: it can make lighting noise, shadow instability and blur more visible. The highest-quality mode that still meets your target usually produces a better result than a very low internal resolution paired with expensive lighting features.

If you need more speed, step down one quality level at a time rather than jumping directly to the most aggressive Performance option. Check foliage, distant geometry, hair and dark interiors after each change. These areas reveal reconstruction and lighting problems sooner than a bright, static scene.

Choose Cinematic or Ultra lighting before Max

TechSpot found that Cinematic and Ultra lighting reduced shadow flicker and noise more effectively than lower settings in its tested build. Max can be substantially more expensive, and ray reconstruction or ray regeneration may force Lighting Quality to Max automatically. That hidden interaction can turn an apparently modest toggle into an extreme preset.

Use Cinematic as the practical baseline. Move to Ultra when your frame-time graph remains stable in the most demanding route you can reproduce. Reserve Max for systems with substantial headroom and for players who have confirmed that the additional lighting quality is worth the cost at their chosen resolution.

DLSS and FSR: choosing an upscaler version and mode

DLSS 4.0 versus DLSS 4.5

Both versions were available in the PC builds examined by TechSpot and DSOGaming, but their visual behavior was not identical. Those tests found DLSS 4.0 cleaner or less flickery than DLSS 4.5. Start with the quality mode in DLSS 4.0, then compare the same route in 4.5. Look at thin branches, distant fences, shimmering highlights and moving shadows; do not judge only from a paused screenshot.

Take on the role of the Greymane Kliff and embark on a journey across the continent to reclaim everything youve lost. Explore uncharted lands, encounter mysterious factions, and experience firsthand a world that is as breathtaking as it is merciless.

If 4.5 gives you a useful performance or clarity advantage on your particular driver and patch, keep it. The published finding is a build-specific comparison, not a claim that 4.0 is always superior on every system.

FSR 3 and FSR 4 on AMD hardware

Crimson Desert officially supports FSR 3 and FSR 4. TechSpot reported that FSR 4 performed well on AMD GPUs in its testing. Select the highest quality mode that maintains your target frame rate, and make the same moving-scene checks used for DLSS: foliage, particles, fine geometry and camera pans.

Upscaler quality and frame generation are separate decisions. A quality upscaler can provide a stable base image; frame generation can then insert additional displayed frames. Do not use frame generation to disguise an unstable base render.

Ray tracing, reconstruction and regeneration

Do not disable ray tracing automatically

DSOGaming measured an approximately 3–4 FPS difference between ray-traced and non-ray-traced configurations in its test. The result depends on hardware, resolution and scene, but it shows why ray tracing should not be the first universal cut. Ultra and Cinematic presets automatically enable ray tracing in the tested configuration, so comparing presets without checking the individual toggle can produce misleading conclusions.

Leave ray tracing on for your initial Cinematic-versus-Ultra comparison. Disable it only if your own repeatable route shows a meaningful frame-time improvement or if its reflections and shadows are not worth the visual cost to you.

Ray reconstruction and ray regeneration

Ray reconstruction can improve denoising, but it may also force Lighting Quality to Max. In TechSpot’s tested build, that behavior made the option considerably more expensive than its label suggests. The same testing also observed artifacts, including rain disappearing. Treat reconstruction or regeneration as an image-quality experiment, not a guaranteed performance upgrade.

  1. Record a baseline with ray tracing on and reconstruction off.
  2. Enable reconstruction or regeneration without changing resolution, lighting or the upscaler.
  3. Check the lighting mode after enabling it; confirm whether it has switched to Max.
  4. Repeat the outdoor, settlement and indoor scenes, looking for denoising improvements, ghosting, missing rain and frame-time spikes.
  5. Keep it only when the visual improvement outweighs the added cost and artifacts.

Frame generation: smoother motion, not more base performance

Frame generation can make motion appear smoother after the underlying render rate is healthy. It does not remove the work required to render the original frames, and it cannot repair traversal stutter or poor frame pacing at a low base rate. Enable it after you have selected lighting, resolution and upscaling settings.

DSOGaming saw artifacts during fast camera movement. Test rapid turns, mounted movement and combat pans rather than a slow walk. Watch for ghost trails, doubled characters, warped particles and input response that feels less direct. If those defects are distracting, turn frame generation off and lower a quality setting enough to stabilize native frames instead.

Build practical PC profiles

The following profiles describe priorities rather than guaranteed presets. Adjust the upscaler mode until your own demanding route meets its target.

Profile Render resolution Lighting Upscaler Ray features Best use
Image-quality Native or highest-quality mode your GPU sustains Cinematic or Ultra DLSS 4.0 on NVIDIA after comparison; FSR 4 quality mode on supported AMD hardware Ray tracing on; reconstruction only after testing Sharper image and cleaner lighting when frame time is stable
Balanced One quality step below native if required Cinematic Quality or equivalent mode Ray tracing on initially; disable only after measuring Consistent play without an extreme resolution drop
Performance Lowest internal resolution that still looks acceptable Cinematic first, then lower only if necessary Performance mode or equivalent Disable reconstruction first if it forced Max; test ray tracing separately Holding a firm target on constrained hardware

Keep a short record of each profile: GPU and CPU, output resolution, lighting tier, upscaler version and mode, ray settings, frame-generation state, average FPS and the worst-feeling section of the route. This prevents a visually impressive but unstable setting from becoming your default by accident.

What published PC results actually show

TechRadar reported around 70 FPS at native 3440×1440 on Cinematic without upscaling using an RTX 4080 Super and Ryzen 7 5700X3D test system. That figure describes that hardware, resolution, preset and test date; it is not a universal expectation for an RTX 4080 Super or for every area of the game.

On a Lenovo Legion Go S with a Z1 Extreme, TechRadar reported roughly 30–40 FPS at Medium with FSR 3.1 Balanced. The result illustrates the trade-off on a handheld: a lower preset and upscaling can produce a playable range, but frame rate still varies by scene and power configuration.

Console performance modes

On consoles, the mode selection is the main performance decision rather than a long list of individual PC-style controls. MeriStation reports that PS5, PS5 Pro and Xbox Series X offer a Performance target around 60 FPS. Series S targets 40 FPS in Performance. On standard consoles, Balanced targets about 40 FPS and Quality about 30 FPS. These are targets reported for the tested console versions, not guarantees that every scene will hold the number continuously.

Platform or mode Reported target Trade-off
PS5, PS5 Pro or Xbox Series X — Performance Around 60 FPS Prioritizes responsiveness over resolution and visual settings
Xbox Series S — Performance Around 40 FPS Higher responsiveness than quality modes with a lower performance target than larger consoles
Standard console — Balanced Around 40 FPS Middle ground between image quality and responsiveness
Standard console — Quality Around 30 FPS Prioritizes resolution and visual fidelity
PS5 Pro — Quality option Native 4K at 30 FPS Uses the console’s higher-resolution option; PS5 Pro also adds PSSR support

Choose Performance for action, camera control and lower input latency. Choose Balanced when a 40-FPS target is acceptable and you want more image quality. Choose Quality when resolution matters more than responsiveness. A VRR-compatible display can make frame-rate oscillation less perceptible, but it cannot raise the game’s underlying frame rate.

Fixes for common symptoms

Shadow flicker or noisy lighting

  • Raise Lighting Quality to Cinematic or Ultra.
  • Check that an aggressive upscaler mode has not lowered internal resolution too far.
  • Compare DLSS 4.0 with 4.5 on the same route; the tested builds favored 4.0 for cleanliness.
  • Test reconstruction separately and inspect for new artifacts before keeping it enabled.

Stutter during traversal or in settlements

  • Repeat the same route and watch frame-time consistency, not only average FPS.
  • Lower one expensive setting at a time, starting with reconstruction or an unnecessarily high lighting tier.
  • Do not assume ray tracing is the main culprit; the cited test found an approximately 3–4 FPS difference, while other lighting and resolution choices can cost more.
  • Use frame generation only after the base render is stable.

Ghosting or broken effects during camera movement

  • Disable frame generation and repeat a fast pan.
  • Compare the other upscaler version at the same quality mode.
  • Turn off ray reconstruction or regeneration if rain, particles or fine geometry disappear.

The game looks blurry after raising FPS

  • Move from Performance to Balanced or Quality upscaling.
  • Raise internal render resolution before lowering lighting further.
  • Check distant foliage and dark interiors, where low internal resolution is most obvious.

A repeatable tuning routine

  1. Pick a target appropriate to your display: a stable 60, a stable 40 or a stable 30 can all be valid goals.
  2. Use Cinematic, Cinematic lighting and native or high-quality rendering as the baseline.
  3. Run the same outdoor, settlement and indoor scenes and note average FPS plus visible frame-time spikes.
  4. Change only internal resolution or upscaler mode, then repeat the route.
  5. Compare DLSS 4.0 and 4.5, or the available FSR quality modes, without changing other settings.
  6. Test ray tracing on and off; keep the choice that improves your measured result or image enough to justify it.
  7. Test reconstruction or regeneration, checking whether Lighting Quality changed to Max and whether effects remain intact.
  8. Enable frame generation last and inspect rapid camera movement for artifacts and input feel.
  9. Save the profile that delivers the most consistent frame times at your chosen image quality, not the one with the highest isolated FPS reading.

Because results vary with GPU, CPU, driver, resolution, patch and scene, retest after major game or driver updates. A setting that was clean in one build can change behavior in another.
