Crimson Desert Pets Guide: Adoption, Trust, Birds, Loot and Combat Dogs

By VGSources Team 13 min read

Crimson Desert’s pet system starts with a simple loop: find a stray or other available animal, raise its Trust, use the interaction that appears at the required threshold, choose Take in, and manage the result from the inventory’s Pets tab. Dogs can collect enemy drops automatically, and they can attack when equipped with the official Sigil of Valor. Birds use a different, food-based bonding process tied to the quest item Sotdae of Bond.

This guide separates confirmed patch information from practical details reported by the independent Crimson Desert HQ guide. It explains the everyday adoption routine, daily Trust limits, dog and cat behavior, bird bonding, newer animal categories, and the gaps you should not fill with guesses.

What pets do in Crimson Desert

Pets are adoptable animal companions whose functions depend on the species and the systems available in your current patch. The ordinary dog-and-cat system is built around Trust: you interact with an animal repeatedly, reach the game’s undisclosed adoption threshold, and then use Take in. After adoption, the companion is managed through the Pets tab in your inventory.

Dogs have the clearest practical utility in the baseline guide. An adopted dog can automatically pick up enemy drops, including low-value items. That convenience has a cost: the guide reports no loot filter, so a dog can place unwanted materials in your inventory and make it fill faster than expected. Cats are described by the same guide as companion-focused in its baseline coverage. That wording should not be extended to every later patch, because Pearl Abyss subsequently added birds, legendary animal pets, a Baby Wyvern, small animals, Kuku Bird Chick and pet-registration challenges.

Combat is an exception to the idea that pets are only helpers or presentation companions. Pearl Abyss’s Version 1.06.00 patch notes state: “When equipped, pet dogs will attack enemies.” The required item is Sigil of Valor, sold by the Secret Shop NPC in Pororin. A dog’s ability to fight therefore depends on equipping that item; it is not a universal behavior for every pet or every situation.

How to get a normal pet

The following procedure describes the ordinary adoption loop reported by Crimson Desert HQ. It applies to the stray dog and cat process covered by that guide, not automatically to birds or every animal introduced in later updates.

  1. Find an available animal. Stray dogs and cats are reported around Pywel, with higher concentrations near towns in Hernand. These are useful search leads, not a complete official location map.
  2. Interact to build Trust. Use the petting interaction whenever it is available. Each interaction raises Trust by the amount reported in the guide, subject to the daily limit described below.
  3. Feed Fine Meat when you have it. Feeding is a faster Trust option than petting, but it also has its own per-day cap. Do not assume that feeding can be repeated without limit.
  4. Watch for the adoption threshold. The game does not require you to guess a hidden button sequence. Continue the available Trust interactions until the animal reaches the threshold at which the adoption interaction appears.
  5. Choose Take in. Select Take in when the prompt becomes available. This converts the animal from a stray you are bonding with into an adopted companion.
  6. Open the inventory’s Pets tab. Confirm that the companion is listed there, then use the pet-management controls available for your current version.

If the Take in prompt is absent, that normally means the animal has not reached the required Trust state or that you are dealing with an animal governed by a different system. The reviewed material does not establish one universal numeric threshold, so do not substitute a community estimate for the in-game prompt.

How Trust works for dogs and cats

Crimson Desert HQ reports the following baseline values for ordinary petting and feeding. These are independent-guide figures, not specifications published in the official sources reviewed for this guide.

Action Trust gained Reported limit Practical use
Pet the animal +5 Trust per interaction Up to five interactions per in-game day Reliable routine when you are near the animal and have no food available
Feed Fine Meat +35 Trust per feeding Up to three feedings per in-game day Faster bonding, provided you have Fine Meat in your inventory

The two limits are separate in the guide’s description. A practical routine is to use the available petting interactions and then feed Fine Meat up to its reported cap, rather than spending all of one resource and expecting the other action to remain unlimited. Because the values come from a guide rather than a developer specification, check the interaction result in your current build if a patch changes the behavior.

Why the threshold is more important than a guessed number

The exact Trust value required for adoption is not established in the material reviewed here. What is established is the sequence: build Trust, reach the game’s threshold, and use Take in. Treat the prompt as the authoritative check for your save and patch. A number copied from an older guide can be wrong if Pearl Abyss changes Trust gains, caps or adoption requirements.

Planning a daily bonding route

When you are working toward a specific animal, make the most of the reported daily caps before leaving the area. Petting costs time but no consumable. Fine Meat costs an item but gives a larger single increase. If the animal is near a town, you can combine a search for strays with other errands, then return on a later in-game day if the prompt has not appeared. The guide does not document a timer independent of the in-game day, so do not assume that sleeping, fast travel or a real-world date resets Trust actions.

Where to look for stray dogs and cats

The independent guide places stray dogs and cats around Pywel and says towns in Hernand tend to have higher concentrations. That is enough to choose a search area, but not enough to publish a guaranteed spawn table. Locations can also be patch-sensitive, and the official update summary does not enumerate every species or point of interest.

  • Search around settlements first, especially towns in Hernand, because the guide identifies them as higher-concentration areas.
  • Approach animals and look for the interaction prompt before assuming they are adoptable. A visible animal is not automatically a pet candidate.
  • Record the location that worked in your own save if you plan to return on another in-game day.
  • Do not treat one successful location as proof that every dog, cat or later animal category uses the same spawn rules.

A complete location database is not supported by the reviewed sources. If a later patch adds a named species or changes a spawn, rely on the current in-game behavior and the latest official notes rather than extending this practical lead into a universal map.

Managing an adopted companion

After selecting Take in, open the inventory and switch to the Pets tab. That is the management point identified by Crimson Desert HQ for the ordinary system. Use it to confirm that adoption succeeded and to inspect the options available to that companion.

Keep the Pets tab in mind when troubleshooting. If an animal is no longer beside you, first check whether it is listed there before searching the world again. The reviewed material does not provide a universal summon command, dismissal rule or stable limit for the number of pets you can own, so those controls should be read from the labels in your current version instead of inferred from another game.

What dogs do

Automatic drop collection

The guide reports that adopted dogs can automatically pick up enemy drops, including low-value items. This makes a dog useful during normal combat and exploration because you do not have to stop after every defeated enemy to collect each item.

The same behavior has an important limitation: there is no loot filter in the guide’s description. A dog may therefore collect materials you would have ignored. Monitor your inventory after fights, especially during long routes or activities that generate many low-value drops. If your inventory begins filling unexpectedly, sort or remove unwanted items before continuing rather than assuming the dog will distinguish valuable loot for you.

Combat with Sigil of Valor

Pearl Abyss’s Version 1.06.00 patch notes provide the official combat exception: “When equipped, pet dogs will attack enemies.” The item is Sigil of Valor, available from the Secret Shop NPC in Pororin.

This wording describes an equipped state, not a permanent property of every dog. If a dog is collecting loot but not attacking, verify that Sigil of Valor is equipped and that you are using a pet dog covered by the patch behavior. The patch notes also mention fixes involving pet summoning and an Iron Eagle taming attempt, which is a reminder that pet-related behavior can receive targeted fixes rather than changing all animals at once.

Choosing a dog for your objective

Choose a dog when your priority is reducing manual pickup work, and consider Sigil of Valor when you specifically want an offensive companion. These are different decisions: automatic collection is the baseline utility described by the guide, while combat requires the official item and an equipped dog. If your priority is simply having a visible companion, the added loot and combat systems may be unnecessary.

What cats do

Crimson Desert HQ describes cats as companion-focused in its baseline dog-and-cat guide. That is a scope-limited description, not proof that cats can never receive a utility feature. Later official updates added new animal categories and pet functions, and the reviewed material does not provide a complete current ability chart for every cat variant.

The bird-system guide reports pet accessory slots and says Sigil of Bonding lets a pet cat remain on the player’s shoulder for longer. Treat that as a guide-reported accessory interaction. It does not establish the item’s exact acquisition route, duration value, compatibility with every cat, or whether later patches changed it.

For a cat-focused playthrough, use the ordinary Trust and Take in process when the animal is a stray dog-or-cat candidate, then inspect the Pets tab for the accessory controls that your build exposes. Do not infer dog-style automatic collection or combat from the fact that both animals are adoptable.

How to get birds as pets

Birds are a separate system introduced in Version 1.04.00, according to Pearl Abyss’s official update summary. Crimson Desert HQ’s April 25, 2026 guide associates bird bonding with the quest-obtained Sotdae of Bond.

Rank #3
Crimson Desert Day 1 Edition - Playstation 5
  • Crimson Desert is an open-world action-adventure game set in the beautiful yet brutal continent of Pywel. Take on the role of the Greymane Kliff and embark on a journey across the continent to reclaim everything youve lost. Explore uncharted lands, encounter mysterious factions, and experience firsthand a world that is as breathtaking as it is merciless.
  1. Obtain Sotdae of Bond through its quest. The guide identifies the item as quest-obtained, but the reviewed material does not provide a complete quest-name, route or location walkthrough.
  2. Use the item to place food. The bird system uses food placement rather than the ordinary dog-and-cat interaction loop.
  3. Build the bird’s Trust through that feeding process. Continue using the available interaction and watch the game for the next state or prompt.
  4. Confirm the resulting pet in your available pet-management interface. The guide connects the system to pet accessories, but it does not document every bird’s final menu or all item requirements.

The guide does not establish exact bird locations, Trust values, preference tables or every item-acquisition detail. Consequently, this is a reliable description of the system’s shape, not an exhaustive bird-catching chart. Do not apply the +5 petting or +35 Fine Meat figures to birds unless a current source or the game itself confirms that they also use those values.

Bird accessories and shoulder time

The same guide reports pet accessory slots and the use of Sigil of Bonding to keep a pet cat on the player’s shoulder longer. That detail belongs to the accessory layer, not to the basic bird-adoption requirement. It also does not prove that every bird can use every accessory. Check the slot and compatibility labels shown by your current build.

New animal categories added by updates

Pearl Abyss’s official Update Highlights, dated August 12, 2026 (UTC), gives a high-level chronology rather than a species-by-species roster. The listed categories are useful for understanding when to expect systems, but they should not be read as a complete list of every available pet.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Update Category or addition named by Pearl Abyss What this tells you
1.04.00 Birds Birds became a pet category; the independent guide connects them to Sotdae of Bond and food placement.
1.05.00 Legendary animal pets A higher-tier animal category was added, but the reviewed material does not provide a complete roster or acquisition table.
1.08.00 Baby Wyvern A named new animal addition; its exact Trust rules and location are not established here.
1.09.00 Small animals A broader category was added without a complete species list in the official summary.
1.10.00 Kuku Bird Chick A named bird-related addition; do not assume it uses every ordinary bird or stray-animal rule.
1.11.00 New pet-registration challenges Registration challenges were added, indicating progression or activity content beyond simple adoption.

These entries show why a static “all pets and exact locations” list would age quickly. The official summary groups additions by update and does not enumerate all species, while the independent guides document only selected systems. Use the category names as a roadmap, then verify the current animal’s prompt, quest and item requirements in game.

How the pet types compare

The evidence supports a comparison by acquisition method, utility and documentation confidence. It does not support naming one universally best pet, because the right choice depends on whether you want collection, combat, presentation or a newly added category.

Pet or category Acquisition method supported by the material Utility described Documentation confidence
Stray dog Raise Trust through petting or Fine Meat, then choose Take in Automatic enemy-drop pickup; attacks when equipped with Sigil of Valor Adoption and loot details are guide-reported; combat is confirmed in Version 1.06.00 patch notes
Stray cat Ordinary Trust-building and Take in loop, when the animal is an eligible stray Companion-focused in the baseline guide; Sigil of Bonding is reported to extend shoulder time Baseline behavior is guide-reported; accessory detail is also guide-reported
Bird Use quest-obtained Sotdae of Bond to place food and build Trust Bird companionship and accessory-related features reported by the guide Bird category is official; process details are guide-reported and incomplete
Legendary animal pet Not stated in the reviewed material Not stated Category confirmed by the official update summary; individual rules not documented here
Baby Wyvern Not stated in the reviewed material Not stated Named addition confirmed officially; acquisition and abilities not documented here
Small animal or Kuku Bird Chick Not stated in the reviewed material Not stated Category or named addition confirmed officially; individual rules not documented here

“Not stated” means the reviewed material does not establish the value. It does not mean the feature is unavailable. Avoid treating missing documentation as a negative ability or as evidence that an animal is cosmetic.

Common mistakes and fixes

Using a petting number as a universal Trust rule

Mistake: applying the dog-and-cat petting and Fine Meat figures to birds, Baby Wyvern or later categories.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix: reserve those values for the ordinary adoption mechanics reported by Crimson Desert HQ. For another animal, follow the prompt and item descriptions in the current build.

Expecting every dog to attack

Mistake: assuming adoption alone grants combat behavior.

Fix: equip Sigil of Valor and confirm that your dog is in the equipped state described by the Version 1.06.00 notes. The item is obtained from the Secret Shop NPC in Pororin.

Letting automatic pickup overflow the inventory

Mistake: treating a dog’s collection as filtered or selective.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix: check your inventory after dense combat and remove low-value items you do not need. The guide reports no loot filter, so prevention is your responsibility.

Searching for a bird like a stray cat

Mistake: looking only for a normal animal interaction.

Fix: use the bird-specific path: obtain Sotdae of Bond through its quest, place food and build Trust. Exact bird locations and preference tables are not established in the reviewed material.

Assuming the official combined total is a pet count

Mistake: describing Pearl Abyss’s 2026 figure as 120 pets.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix: the official summary says 17 patches delivered more than 20 new features and content additions, 120 new mounts and pets combined, and 70 new outfits, equipment and items. The 120 figure cannot be converted into a pet-only total.

Relying on an old roster

Mistake: treating a list made before the bird, Baby Wyvern, small-animal or Kuku Bird Chick updates as current.

Fix: check the latest official patch notes and the animal’s current in-game requirements. Pet systems are patch-sensitive, and the official summary is a chronology rather than a complete database.

A practical routine for building a pet collection

  1. Choose your goal. Decide whether you want automatic pickup, a combat-capable dog, a shoulder companion, a bird or a newly added category. This prevents you from spending Fine Meat on an animal whose system does not use the ordinary adoption loop.
  2. Identify the system before spending resources. Stray dogs and cats use Trust interactions; birds use Sotdae of Bond and food placement. For later categories, read the current prompt because the reviewed material does not specify a universal method.
  3. Use each available daily action efficiently. For ordinary strays, pet up to the guide’s reported cap and feed Fine Meat up to its separate reported cap. Stop when the game indicates that no more daily progress is available.
  4. Adopt only after the prompt appears. Select Take in, then verify the animal in the Pets tab instead of assuming the interaction completed.
  5. Equip only the function you need. Use Sigil of Valor for the official dog-combat behavior. Consider Sigil of Bonding for the guide-reported longer cat shoulder time when presentation is your priority.
  6. Audit inventory after combat. A collection-focused dog can gather low-value drops, so clear space before a long expedition.
  7. Recheck patch notes after updates. New categories and fixes can alter what an item, prompt or pet slot does.

What is confirmed, and what remains unknown

Several facts are firmly anchored to named sources. Pearl Abyss officially confirms the update families, the combined mounts-and-pets figure, bird availability in 1.04.00 and dog combat when Sigil of Valor is equipped in Version 1.06.00. Crimson Desert HQ supplies the practical ordinary-adoption loop, the reported Trust gains and caps, the Pywel and Hernand search lead, dog pickup behavior, cat companion framing and the bird food-placement process.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The following details are not established by the reviewed material: a complete species roster, every animal’s location, a universal Trust threshold, a full food-preference chart, exact bird locations, every item-acquisition route, and the abilities of each later category. A responsible guide labels those gaps instead of turning an update summary into a fictional database.

Finally, Pearl Abyss’s August 12, 2026 Update Highlights thank players for being part of the adventure. That statement is a general player-facing message, not evidence of a pet mechanic, so it should not be used to infer additional features.
