Crimson Desert PS5 Performance: Early Impressions and Later Reviews

Crimson Desert’s pre-release console-review uncertainty gave way to post-launch PS5 coverage: early PS5 Pro impressions were limited, while later reviews noted patch improvements and continuing drops in busy areas.

Crimson Desert launched on PS5 on March 19, 2026. The pre-release concern was that critics had access to the PC version, leaving console performance an open question—not that PS5 reviews would never appear. Early PS5 Pro impressions were cautiously positive about Performance mode, while later PS5 coverage reported patch-related improvements alongside frame-rate drops and pop-in in busy areas. Those accounts are tied to different dates, hardware and stages of play, so they are not a single verdict on every PS5 experience.

Why there were no PS5 reviews before release

Pearl Abyss announced the March 19, 2026 release date on September 25, 2025, when it also opened pre-orders on PS5 and other platforms. The game then launched worldwide on the announced date. Pearl Abyss’s announcement said, “The fight for Pywel begins March 19, 2026.”

In its pre-release coverage, Tom’s Guide reported that critics had access to the PC game before launch, while console performance remained a major question and console footage was limited. That describes the access reported by that outlet; it should not be generalized into a claim about every reviewer. PS5 critic reviews did appear after launch: Metacritic’s PS5 listings include reviews dated March 25 and March 30, 2026, among others.

What early PS5 Pro impressions actually found

On March 21, 2026, Tom’s Guide’s Rory Mellon published early impressions after around 90 minutes playing on a PS5 Pro. He praised the visuals and said Performance mode had felt smooth in that limited session. He had not yet reached large battles or intense boss fights, and he explicitly could not speak to how the game ran on the base PS5. This was a short hands-on, not a full review or a comparison of both consoles.

PlayStation’s product page describes 30, 40 and 60 FPS modes as developer targets for PS5 and PS5 Pro. It also lists enhanced ray tracing, higher target resolutions and PSSR image-quality improvements for PS5 Pro. These are platform-page specifications and targets, not independent measurements of the frame rate players will see in every scene. The page confirms both physical and digital editions, including a PS5 Standard Edition; it does not establish current retailer stock or pricing.

What later PS5 reviews say about performance

Patch improvements, with drops still reported

In an updated PS5 review, Push Square’s Robert Ramsey said the game had come a long way since launch following patches, while still noting frame-rate drops in busy areas and pop-in. The review gives the updated version 8/10; that score is Push Square’s editorial assessment, not a consensus rating or a performance benchmark. The material available for these reviews does not identify a patch number, so the improvement should not be attributed to a specific update.

Why reviews can differ

Launch-period impressions and later reviews reflect different amounts of play and different patch states. Creative Bloq’s PS5 review, published March 30, 2026, says its writer waited to play enough to see the game’s highs and lows and to give patches time, then criticized awkward controls and menus while emphasizing the world’s scale and detail. Push Square’s updated assessment likewise balances technical caveats with praise for exploration, boss fights and combat that improves as the game progresses; it also criticizes quest quality and pacing.

What to take away if you are deciding on PS5

  • Base PS5: The cited early Tom’s Guide hands-on was on PS5 Pro and did not establish base-PS5 performance. Later PS5 review coverage is relevant to the platform, but the reported busy-area drops are not a controlled benchmark for every model or scene.
  • PS5 Pro: The March 21 hands-on offered a limited, early positive observation about Performance mode, not a full-session test under demanding combat conditions.
  • Performance expectations: PlayStation’s 30, 40 and 60 FPS figures are developer targets. The later review evidence describes improvement after patches, but also remaining drops and pop-in; no independently sourced numerical PS5 benchmark is established here.
  • Review timing: The absence of pre-release console access reported by Tom’s Guide is distinct from the post-launch PS5 reviews published later in March.

For the game itself, PlayStation’s Crimson Desert page lists the PS5 editions and console-target information. It does not verify a current Amazon listing, availability or price.
