Crimson Desert Storage and Housing Guide: Move Items, Expand Your Chest, and Unlock Decoration

By VGSources Team 10 min read

Use Private Storage as your general stash, then move materials into the specialized containers available through housing. The first Private Storage chest is reported to be in the black tent at Greymane Camp on Howling Hill after Chapter 3’s “Greymanes Reunited” quest, although that location and story requirement come from an independent guide rather than the official patch notes. To unlock house decoration, follow Luke’s flower-basket request: take the basket to the hilltop house, place it in decoration mode, and return to Luke.

Greymane Camp expansions increase Private Storage from 240 slots to 1,000. Housing also adds dedicated storage for gatherables, cooking ingredients, collectibles, and outfits, while house layouts become available according to the camp’s expansion level.

What to use for each kind of item

Private Storage is the broad, everyday stash for items you want out of your character’s inventory. It is the right first stop when you are unsure where an item belongs. Once housing storage becomes available, specialized containers are more efficient for the categories they support, especially because some stored materials can be consumed directly by crafting, refinement, or cooking systems.

  • Use Private Storage for general inventory items and anything that does not clearly belong in a specialist container.
  • Use the Sturdy Gatherables Chest for stored gathering materials that you want available to crafting or refinement.
  • Use a Kuku Cooler for food and ingredients; the Enhanced Kuku Cooler offers substantially more space.
  • Use the Collectibles Chest for supported quest items and crafting recipes.
  • Use Wardrobes for outfits rather than filling general storage with clothing.

The official patch notes do not publish a complete item-by-item compatibility matrix for every container. When a chest rejects an item, select the container designed for that item category instead of assuming that every housing chest accepts every object.

How Private Storage works

Opening the storage interface

Interact with the Private Storage chest to open its storage interface. The guide-reported workflow is to move an item from your character inventory into the chest, or select an item in storage and move it back into your inventory. This gives you a conventional two-sided stash: one side shows what you are carrying and the other shows what has already been stored.

Private Storage is not the same as a decorative piece placed in your house. At the start of the progression documented by Pearl Abyss, the general chest has 240 slots. Greymane Camp upgrades add capacity in fixed increments, so expanding the camp is the way to increase the general-purpose limit rather than looking for a separate inventory upgrade.

Where the first chest is reported to be

PowerPyx’s March 23, 2026 guide places the early Private Storage chest inside the black tent at Greymane Camp on Howling Hill. That guide says the chest becomes available after Chapter 3’s main quest, “Greymanes Reunited.” The official Pearl Abyss patch notes consulted for this guide confirm the storage system and its capacity progression, but do not confirm that exact tent location or the Chapter 3 trigger.

Use the reported location as your first check, but treat the story requirement as version-sensitive. If the chest is not present, verify that “Greymanes Reunited” is complete, leave and re-enter the camp, and check whether a camp-expansion or housing step is still pending. A later patch can also move an interaction point without changing the underlying storage rules.

Expanding Private Storage to 1,000 slots

Pearl Abyss’ Version 1.02.00 patch notes, dated April 4, 2026, document five Greymane Camp expansions. The first four each add 100 slots; the fifth adds 360. Starting from 240, the upgrades produce a 1,000-slot maximum.

Greymane Camp expansion Slots added Private Storage total
Starting capacity — 240
Expansion 1 +100 340
Expansion 2 +100 440
Expansion 3 +100 540
Expansion 4 +100 640
Expansion 5 +360 1,000

These are capacity increases for the shared Private Storage system, not extra character-inventory rows. If you are close to the limit, moving items into a specialist housing chest can free general slots even before all five camp expansions are complete. The final expansion is especially large, adding more space than any of the first four individually.

Specialized storage in housing

Version 1.04.00 of the Pearl Abyss patch notes, revised April 27, 2026, identifies several dedicated containers. Their different capacities and direct-use functions make them useful for separate categories rather than as interchangeable boxes.

Container Accepted category Capacity How it is obtained Direct use while stored Housing placement
Sturdy Gatherables Chest Gathering materials 1,000 slots Purchase from a furniture shop Materials can be used for crafting or refinement without carrying them Place through housing mode
Kuku Cooler Food and ingredients 40 slots Quest reward Ingredients can be used for cooking without carrying them Place through housing mode
Enhanced Kuku Cooler Food and ingredients 330 slots Craftable Ingredients can be used for cooking without carrying them Place through housing mode
Collectibles Chest Various quest items and crafting recipes 1,000 slots Quest reward Its documented purpose is category storage; no broader direct-use function is specified Place through housing mode
Wardrobe Outfits 100 slots per wardrobe; 1,000 total outfit-storage capacity Purchase from a furniture shop Stores outfits separately from general items Place through housing mode

Sturdy Gatherables Chest

The Sturdy Gatherables Chest is a housing-placeable 1,000-slot container sold at furniture shops. Its important advantage is not merely the size: stored gathering materials remain available to crafting and refinement systems without being moved back into your character inventory. That makes it the natural destination for bulk materials gathered during exploration.

Place the chest through housing mode, then transfer compatible materials from your inventory. If a material does not transfer, do not assume the chest is broken; the official notes do not define every accepted item, so use the category distinction as the first diagnostic.

Kuku Cooler and Enhanced Kuku Cooler

The quest-obtained Kuku Cooler has 40 slots. The Enhanced Kuku Cooler is craftable and has 330 slots. Both are intended for food and ingredients, and stored ingredients can be used in cooking without being carried.

The two coolers therefore solve the same category problem at different capacities. Keep the 40-slot cooler if you need an early, compact cooking store, and move toward the craftable 330-slot version when ingredient volume makes the smaller container inconvenient. The available evidence establishes their capacities and cooking function, but not a rule that one cooler must be replaced by the other.

Collectibles Chest

The Collectibles Chest is a quest-obtained, housing-placeable container with 1,000 slots for various quest items and crafting recipes. It is useful for objects that are valuable to retain but do not belong in the gatherables or cooking categories. Because the official notes do not provide an item-by-item list, test a borderline object in the chest interface rather than moving it blindly.

Wardrobe

A Wardrobe is purchased from a furniture shop and provides 100 outfit slots. Outfit storage is capped at 1,000 slots in total, so multiple wardrobes can be used until that aggregate limit is reached. Keeping outfits in wardrobes prevents cosmetic gear from competing with ordinary materials and quest objects for general storage space.

How to unlock your house and decoration mode

The independent housing walkthrough from The Games Wiki describes Luke’s flower-basket request as the decoration unlock. The official patch notes confirm that houses have selectable layouts and that house types are tied to Greymane Camp expansion, but they do not provide the Luke quest walkthrough. Follow these steps for the guide-reported unlock sequence.

  1. Find Luke at Greymane Camp. Speak with him and accept the request involving a flower basket.
  2. Take the basket to the hilltop house. Travel to the house associated with the request rather than trying to place the item from the camp conversation area.
  3. Enter decoration mode. Use the house’s decoration interaction so the furnishing placement interface appears.
  4. Place the flower basket. Select the basket and position it in the house as required by the request. Confirm the placement before leaving the mode.
  5. Return to Luke. Speak with Luke again to complete the request and finish the reported decoration unlock.

If the basket cannot be placed, make sure you are in decoration mode rather than the ordinary interaction view, and check that the basket is still in your inventory. If Luke does not offer the request, advance the main story and camp progression until his dialogue becomes available. The walkthrough’s publication date was not shown in the consulted result, so quest wording or prerequisites may change in a later build.

House layouts and Greymane Camp expansion

House selection is connected to the camp’s expansion level. Pearl Abyss’ official notes list four layout names: Compact, Standard, Spacious, and Spacious Pailunese House. The notes establish that available house types unlock as Greymane Camp expands, but they do not publish a full table matching each layout to a specific expansion number.

This means layout choice is a progression decision, not simply a cosmetic menu available from the beginning. If a larger layout is missing, continue the Greymane Camp expansion rather than repeatedly searching the decoration interface. The exact availability shown on your character can also depend on whether the camp has already been moved to Pailune.

What changes when the camp moves to Pailune

After moving the camp to Pailune, the player receives a Private Storage item that can be placed through housing mode. This is distinct from the early chest reported at Greymane Camp: it is an item you place as part of the housing system.

When planning the move, keep the distinction clear:

  • The original Private Storage progression is documented as a 240-slot starting system that can reach 1,000 through five Greymane Camp expansions.
  • The Pailune reward is a placeable Private Storage item supplied after the camp move.
  • Specialized chests remain category-specific; moving the camp does not turn a gatherables chest into a general item chest.

The official notes do not state whether every previously placed container is automatically repositioned, so inspect housing mode after the move and confirm that the storage pieces you rely on are available where you expect them.

A practical organization plan

Start with a three-way sort

When your inventory starts filling, sort items into three groups: general objects for Private Storage, materials for the Sturdy Gatherables Chest, and food or ingredients for a Kuku Cooler. Put quest items and crafting recipes into the Collectibles Chest once you have it, and reserve Wardrobes for outfits.

This approach keeps the broad stash from becoming a mixed pile. It also preserves the direct-use benefits of the specialist containers: gatherables stay available to crafting and refinement, while cooking ingredients remain visible to cooking systems without a transfer trip.

Use capacity as a progression signal

Check the Private Storage total after each Greymane Camp expansion. The documented sequence makes the next upgrade’s effect predictable, and the fifth expansion is large enough to change how aggressively you can retain general items. If the general chest is full while specialist containers have unused capacity, move compatible categories first rather than discarding materials.

Place containers where the housing interface can reach them

Specialized chests must be placed through housing mode. If a chest appears in your item list but cannot be opened from the normal camp interaction, enter the house’s decoration or placement interface and position it there. The placement requirement applies to the Sturdy Gatherables Chest, both Kuku Cooler versions, the Collectibles Chest, and Wardrobes.

Troubleshooting storage and housing

The first chest is not at the reported location

Recheck the black tent at Greymane Camp on Howling Hill, then confirm whether Chapter 3’s “Greymanes Reunited” is complete. Because the location and trigger are guide-reported rather than confirmed in the official notes, a patch-specific change is possible. Also check whether the camp has progressed to a state where a different Private Storage interaction is supplied.

An item will not move into a chest

Try the specialist container that matches the item’s category. Gatherables belong in the Sturdy Gatherables Chest, food and ingredients in a Kuku Cooler, outfits in a Wardrobe, and supported quest items or crafting recipes in the Collectibles Chest. There is no complete published compatibility matrix, so the game’s acceptance behavior is the final check for edge cases.

Crafting or cooking cannot see a stored item

Confirm that the item is in the container designed for that activity. The documented direct-use behavior applies to gathering materials in the Sturdy Gatherables Chest for crafting or refinement, and to food or ingredients in either Kuku Cooler for cooking. An item sitting in Private Storage may need to be moved to the relevant specialist container before the activity can use it.

The house layout you want is unavailable

Continue Greymane Camp expansion. The official notes tie layout availability to expansion level and list Compact, Standard, Spacious, and Spacious Pailunese House, but do not specify which expansion unlocks each one. If you have moved to Pailune, check the housing layout selection again because the Pailunese option is part of the documented set.

Decoration mode will not accept the flower basket

Confirm that Luke’s request is active, that the basket is in your inventory, and that you entered the hilltop house’s decoration mode before selecting the item. Place the basket, exit the mode, and return to Luke to trigger completion. If Luke’s dialogue is unavailable, progress the story and camp state before trying the request again.

Version and evidence notes

The storage capacities, specialist-container functions, house-layout names, and Pailune Private Storage item described here come from Pearl Abyss’ Version 1.04.00 patch notes, revised April 27, 2026. The 240-slot starting capacity and the five-step progression to 1,000 are documented in Version 1.02.00 patch notes dated April 4, 2026. The black-tent location and Chapter 3 trigger are reported by PowerPyx on March 23, 2026, while the Luke flower-basket sequence comes from The Games Wiki’s “Personal Housing – Crimson Desert Wiki” walkthrough. Since storage and housing can change with patches, use the in-game labels and current quest state if they differ from these documented steps.
