To chop wood in Crimson Desert, equip the Logging Axe from the equipment wheel, target a tree trunk, and use the attack button. On the guide-reported PC default, hold F2, select the axe, hold Ctrl to target the trunk, then left-click. On controller, hold Left D-pad, select the axe, hold LB to target, then press RB. You must also chop the fallen trunk and its sections to collect Timber and Fine Timber.
What you need before chopping
Logging is performed with an in-game tool called the Logging Axe. A combat weapon that happens to look like an axe does not substitute for it, and merely carrying the tool in your inventory does not start the gathering action. The axe must be the active selection on your equipment wheel before you attack.

The most straightforward way to obtain one is during Turnali’s Request. Turnali, at the Hernand smithy, gives you a Logging Axe and sends you toward nearby trees. A separate guide also reports that the Provisioner’s Shop in Hernand sells a Logging Axe, so you have an alternative if you need another one or did not begin the quest. See the quest-specific instructions in PC Gamer’s Turnali’s Request guide and the location details in PowerPyx’s Timber and Fine Timber guide.
Once the axe is active, the job has two distinct phases: first bring down a standing tree, then process the fallen trunk and its sections. Stopping after the first phase leaves the usable materials on the ground and can make it seem as if logging has failed.

Guide-reported controls for keyboard, mouse and controller
The following bindings are the defaults reported by guides published on March 18–19, 2026. They are not an official universal control table; a remapped layout, platform setting or later game update can change a button. If your prompts differ, follow the prompts shown in your game.
| Action | Keyboard and mouse | Controller |
|---|---|---|
| Open equipment wheel | Hold F2 | Hold Left D-pad |
| Select the Logging Axe | Move to the axe on the wheel and release according to your layout | Move to the axe on the wheel and release according to your layout |
| Target the tree or trunk | Hold Ctrl | Hold LB |
| Strike | Left-click | Press RB |
Targeting and striking are separate inputs. If you press the attack button while a combat weapon is still active, your character can draw or swing that weapon instead of performing the logging animation. If an on-screen prompt or your custom binding uses a different button, use that prompt rather than forcing the defaults above.
How to chop a tree and collect wood
1. Acquire the Logging Axe
Visit Turnali at the Hernand smithy during Turnali’s Request to receive the tool, or check the Provisioner’s Shop in Hernand for the reported purchase option. Confirm that the Logging Axe appears in your available equipment-wheel tools. An axe icon in your inventory is not enough by itself; it must be selected as the active tool.
2. Select the axe from the equipment wheel
Hold the equipment-wheel button for your platform, highlight the Logging Axe, and make it the current selection. Keep the wheel open long enough to verify that the axe is highlighted before releasing. This is the step most often missed when players say they have an axe but the game keeps using a sword or another weapon.

3. Find a standing tree and target its trunk
Move close to a tree and aim at the lower trunk rather than the leaves or surrounding ground. Hold the target input—Ctrl on the guide-reported keyboard layout or LB on controller—until the tree is recognized. Targeting establishes that the next attack is intended for the resource node.
4. Strike until the tree falls
With the trunk targeted, use the attack input repeatedly: left-click on the reported PC default or RB on controller. The tree does not become harvestable after one hit. Continue the sequence until the standing tree falls.
5. Chop the fallen trunk
After the fall, target the trunk lying on the ground and attack it again. The fallen tree breaks into sections. This second interaction is not optional: the standing-tree phase brings it down, while the fallen-trunk phase turns it into pieces that can be gathered.

6. Process each section and gather the materials
Continue targeting and striking the sections until they become gatherable. The resulting resources include Timber and Fine Timber. If you walk away immediately after the fall, you may collect nothing because the trunk has not been processed far enough.

Turnali’s Request: the exact woodcutting route
Turnali’s quest provides a guided introduction to logging and uses Fine Timber for the next smithing task.
- Speak with Turnali at the Hernand smithy. During the described quest step, he gives you the Logging Axe and directs you toward nearby trees.
- Travel to the marked stand. The guide places the objective on the island between the rivers east of Hernand. Use the quest marker rather than searching randomly if the location is not obvious.
- Log a marked tree. Equip the axe, target the trunk, fell the tree, then process the fallen trunk and its sections. The guide reports that one tree supplies the requested materials for this step.
- Return the Fine Timber. Bring the requested Fine Timber back to Turnali at the smithy.
- Read the Smithy Poster. Open your inventory and go to Key Item | Poster, then read the Smithy Poster. This reading step is part of the quest progression rather than a separate woodcutting activity.
- Speak with Turnali again. After the poster is read, talk to him once more to continue the task.
- Refine the Bekker Shield. The described quest sequence ends with refining the Bekker Shield after the return conversation.
If the quest does not advance after delivering Fine Timber, check the Key Item | Poster section specifically. Having the material is not the same as completing the poster-reading objective.
Why your character keeps using a sword
The usual cause is that the Logging Axe is in your inventory but is not the active equipment-wheel selection. Steam Community discussion replies describe the wheel-selection step as a source of confusion for some players. That is anecdotal, not proof of a universal bug, but it matches the action sequence described by the game guides.

A reliable input sequence
When the game appears unresponsive, perform the actions in this order instead of alternating between combat and gathering inputs:
Rank #4
- A boundless connected, wide world - countless destinies await you on the seamlessly designed open world continent Pywel
- Versatile action, merciless battles - There is no predetermined solution on the battlefield of Crimson Desert
- The beginning of fate - In Pailune on the continent of Pywel there is a fragile balance between different powers
- Contents: the game, "deluxe package", "Khaled Shield" DLC, Steelbook, character cards, patches, etc.
- Stand within reach of a standing tree.
- Open the equipment wheel and make the Logging Axe active.
- Close the wheel and place your aim on the trunk.
- Hold the target input.
- While the trunk remains targeted, press the attack input repeatedly until the tree falls.
- Retarget the fallen trunk, then attack until it separates into sections.
- Retarget each section and continue striking until the game allows collection.
This sequence separates the three states that are easy to confuse: selecting the tool, targeting the resource, and performing the attack. A combat attack can look similar on screen but does not replace the Logging Axe action.
Timber versus Fine Timber
Both materials come from processing the same fallen tree, but they are not interchangeable quest labels. The guides identify Timber and Fine Timber as the resources collected after chopping the trunk and its sections. Turnali’s Request specifically asks for Fine Timber in the described objective, so check the exact item name in your inventory before returning to the smithy.
The game does not require a real-world axe or any external equipment for this task. The relevant item is the in-game Logging Axe, and all useful progress comes from the equipment-wheel and target-and-attack sequence.

Control and version caveat
The named bindings come from guide reports published March 18 and 19, 2026. No official, current control table is established here, so treat F2 + Ctrl + left-click and Left D-pad + LB + RB as reported defaults, not guarantees for every installation. Remapped controls and future patches can alter them. The most dependable authority during play is the prompt shown by your current build and the bindings listed in its settings.
Quick Recap
Quick checklist
- You have obtained a Logging Axe from Turnali or the reported Provisioner’s Shop in Hernand.
- The Logging Axe is selected on the equipment wheel, not merely stored in inventory.
- You are aiming at the tree’s trunk.
- You are holding the target input before pressing attack.
- You continue after the tree falls and process the trunk and each section.
- You collect the resulting Timber and Fine Timber.
- For Turnali’s Request, you return the Fine Timber, read Key Item | Poster, and talk to Turnali again.
