That is her interpretation, not a demonstrated cause. The sources available on October 8, 2026 do not isolate review timing from build differences, game design, or how the two rating populations differ. Metacritic’s accessed page showed a 77 Metascore from 115 critic reviews and an 8.8 user score from 13,492 ratings.
What Park actually claimed
Park’s argument has three parts, and they are worth separating because each can be checked differently.

The build reviewers played
Park said critics had to play a build that was not the exact same version as the launch game. In her interview with The Game Business, published October 8, 2026, she made this point as the first of her explanations for the gap. GamesRadar reproduced the same remark and said that both sides had fair points, particularly critics.
Limited review time
Park said reviewers had limited time. She framed this as a structural problem: the usual approach to reviewing a large game is to follow the main story line, while the game’s appeal is spread across hidden details and exploration. In her words, she was “not sure critics had the fair chance to explore those during the review period.”

Where the game’s appeal lies
Park’s broader claim is that Crimson Desert’s strengths sit in the world itself: small, hidden details and freedom to explore beyond typical genre expectations. This is a statement about the game’s design intent and what she thinks reviewers missed, and it is the part of her argument that depends most on personal judgment.
The score gap, with dates and sources
The figures below come from two dated snapshots. They are not live values, and they should not be merged into a single number.
| Source | Date of snapshot | Critic score | User score | Other user measure |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Metacritic (page as accessed) | Accessed October 8, 2026; release date listed as March 19, 2026 | 77 Metascore from 115 critic reviews | 8.8 from 13,492 ratings (10-point scale) | Not stated |
| GamesRadar report | October 8, 2026 | 77 Metacritic score | 8.7 user score | Steam’s Crimson Desert Enhanced page: 83% positive lifetime reviews and 77% positive recent reviews, as reported in that article |
Two cautions apply. First, the user score from Metacritic (8.8) and the one GamesRadar reported (8.7) differ, and the sources do not explain why; the likeliest reading is that they were captured at different moments, but that is not confirmed. Second, Metacritic’s 10-point user score and Steam’s percentage of positive reviews measure different things on different scales, so a 77% Steam figure should not be read as equivalent to an 8.8 user score.
Why the explanation is plausible but not proven
Park’s argument points at real features of how games get reviewed, but the published interview does not test it. No controlled comparison is offered. Several factors could contribute to a gap between critic and user scores, and the sources do not separate them:
- Build version. If reviewers played an earlier build, their scores describe that build, not the game players later bought.
- Review length. A reviewer working to a deadline may not reach late-game content or the open-world activities Park highlights.
- Rating populations. Critics are professional reviewers who play to an assignment. User ratings come from people who chose to buy the game and then chose to rate it, and that group is not a random sample of anyone.
- Criteria. Critics often weigh narrative focus, systems clarity, and controls, while players may weigh different things, such as exploration and their own playtime.
- Timing after launch. Patches change how a game plays. A review written at launch may describe a version that no longer matches what players rate today.
The first, second, and fifth factors are the ones Park’s argument rests on. The third and fourth are not addressed in the interview at all.
What critics praised and criticized
Metacritic’s critic pages show the disagreement is about criteria as well as build. One review excerpt praises the density of the world, its sandbox mechanics, and the freedom it gives players to express themselves. Another warns that players who prefer a streamlined experience, a tighter narrative focus, or clearer systems may find the game frustrating. These two excerpts are examples of differing standards, not a survey of all critics, but they show what Park’s “hidden details” argument would need to answer: some critics clearly valued the world’s breadth, and others were frustrated by the same design.
The build question: launch version versus the current game
GamesRadar’s account is that the launch-period version of Crimson Desert was a different and weaker version than the one that exists after later updates, and that patches can make earlier reviews outdated. The same report says the Enhanced version directly patched the central story, while ongoing changes covered balance, economies, quality of life, UI, performance, and bugs. This is the journalist’s characterization rather than a published changelog, so the exact list of changes between the review build and the current release should be checked against the publisher’s own patch notes before drawing detailed conclusions.
Rank #2
- A VAST, SEAMLESS WORLD — Explore the continent of Pywel as a fully seamless open world, where countless destinies unfold across uncharted lands filled with danger, beauty, and discovery.
- RELENTLESS ACTION, BRUTAL COMBAT — Fight for survival in fast‑paced, visceral battles using swords, spears, bows, elemental abilities, and powerful skills, where a single moment can determine victory or defeat.
- DAWNING FATE — Witness the fragile balance between rival factions shatter as Kliff and the Greymanes are drawn into a brutal conflict that reshapes the fate of the continent.
- THOSE WHO PROTECT AND THOSE WHO TORMENT — Confront the Black Bears and their ruthless leader Myurdin as allies fall, loyalties fracture, and Pywel descends further into chaos.
- THE BEGINNING OF A NEW JOURNEY — Set out to rebuild the Greymanes, reclaim a lost homeland, and pursue vengeance along a path that reveals deeper truths about power, war, and destiny.
That gap matters for reading the scores. A critic who reviewed in spring 2026 and a player rating in October 2026 may be judging two different games, and the two sets of numbers are not measuring the same thing.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The counterpoint: the review window was the publisher’s choice
GamesRadar’s writer, Austin Wood, does not fully accept Park’s explanation. His point is that Pearl Abyss set the reviewing period, so the timing Park now describes as a limitation was a decision the publisher made. He does not dispute that longer review windows would help. He wrote: “I definitely agree that longer review periods are better for everyone.” Read together, the two positions agree on one thing, that more time would have helped critics. They disagree on whether the time limit explains the score gap.
Scale of the player base
Pearl Abyss announced on May 6, 2026 that Crimson Desert had sold five million copies worldwide, with the milestone reached on April 15, 2026. The same announcement reported a peak of 276,261 concurrent Steam players since release. The Game Business later reported six million copies sold, with half on PlayStation and Xbox, in its October 8, 2026 coverage; that article does not explain how the figure was counted. These numbers show that the user-rating pool is large, but they do not show that users are more favorable than critics, and sales are not a measure of satisfaction.
How to read the gap for yourself
- Note the aggregator or store, the page date, and the review or rating count for each score before comparing them.
- Check whether the critic reviews were published at launch or after patches, and whether the reviewer reported the version tested.
- Treat Metacritic’s 10-point user score and Steam’s positive-review percentage as separate measures, and never average them.
- Look at what critics said about story, exploration, systems, and controls, and whether the complaint is about the game or about the time spent with it.
- Give Park’s explanation weight only as far as the review-build and time-limit evidence supports it.
Versions and platforms to check
Pearl Abyss lists Crimson Desert on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam, Epic Games Store, and Mac. Metacritic’s accessed page also showed purchase options from Fanatical and Best Buy. Before comparing reviews with the version you own, confirm the exact platform edition and whether you have the Enhanced release or the original launch build, because the sources do not establish which edition each critic reviewed or each user rated.
- Platform: PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam, Epic Games Store, or Mac, as listed by Pearl Abyss.
- Edition: whether the copy is the Enhanced version referenced by GamesRadar or an earlier release.
- Patch level: the current version number shown in the game’s settings or store page.
