Short answer: Campaign 1 (Vox Machina) has the sharpest romantic contrast: Vex’ahlia and Percy grow into a durable family partnership, while Vax’ildan and Keyleth become a love story shaped by duty, mortality, and separation. Campaign 2 (the Mighty Nein) spreads its romantic development across three substantial pairings—Fjord/Jester, Beau/Yasha, and Caleb/Essek—with different kinds of commitment. Campaign 3 (Bells Hells) is the most concentrated, centering Imogen/Laudna and tying their relationship directly to the campaign’s supernatural conflict, while Orym/Dorian provides a confirmed secondary arc.
Spoiler warning: This is a canon-focused comparison covering major relationship developments and official future-state information from all three campaigns.

How the three campaigns differ at a glance
Critical Role does not use one repeatable romance formula. Each campaign places romantic storytelling at a different point in the party’s life cycle, gives it a different dramatic job, and ends at a different level of certainty.

| Main romantic shape | Two dominant arcs: a durable partnership and a tragic separation | Several parallel relationships | One dominant romance plus a confirmed secondary arc |
| Principal couples | Vex/Percy; Vax/Keyleth | Fjord/Jester; Beau/Yasha; Caleb/Essek | Imogen/Laudna; Orym/Dorian |
| Typical pacing | Romance emerges inside an already-established party | Slow development through friendship and healing | Early emotional centrality, then repeated crisis and reconciliation |
| Main obstacles | Duty, mortality, sacrifice, and trauma | Insecurity, guilt, political danger, and emotional recovery | Possession, grief, identity, and agency |
| Published endpoint | Whitestone family life for Vex/Percy; Vax remains bound to the Matron; Pike/Scanlan reconnect | Wedding plans for Fjord/Jester; adoption plans for Beau/Yasha; Caleb and Essek plan a hidden future | Cottage and shared adventures for Imogen/Laudna; mutual feelings for Orym/Dorian |
That structure is more useful than asking which couple is “best.” Campaign 1 is the most tragic, Campaign 2 the broadest ensemble romance, and Campaign 3 the most concentrated around one relationship. The answer changes depending on whether you value a domestic endpoint, a slow-burn process, a plot-integrated crisis, or emotional tragedy.

What counts as a canon romance here?
This comparison counts relationships that receive sustained in-game romantic development or an explicit romantic outcome. A friendship, a flirtation that never becomes mutual, or a popular fan ship is not automatically a canon couple. That distinction matters especially in the Mighty Nein, where intense friendships and playful chemistry coexist with confirmed romances.
“Canon” also does not require every couple to receive the same amount of screen time. A relationship can be canon through an explicit confession, mutual commitment, or an official post-campaign outcome even if it is quieter than another pairing. Conversely, a strong emotional bond should not be relabeled romantic without the text supporting that reading.
Campaign 1: Vox Machina’s two contrasting love stories
Vox Machina begins as an already-established adventuring group. That starting point changes the romance pacing: the audience is not watching strangers meet and decide whether they can work together. Attraction and affection develop inside a mature party whose members already have shared history, habits, and loyalties.

Vex’ahlia and Percival de Rolo begin with friction, attraction, and competing responsibilities. Their relationship is not simply a side plot attached to the larger adventure. Shared danger, political responsibility, and the work of rebuilding Whitestone give them practical reasons to keep choosing one another.
Among Campaign 1’s romances, Vex/Percy is the clearest durable partnership. Its defining movement is from chemistry and conflict toward a life organized around mutual responsibility. The official future-state recap in C3E121 says that “Percival and Vex’ahlia thrive in Whitestone,” confirming that their relationship survives the campaign and settles into family life rather than ending at the final battle.
That endpoint makes Vex/Percy the conventional long-term success story of Vox Machina. Their romance is still shaped by danger and trauma, but the published future points toward continuity: a shared home, a shared community, and a family identity.
Vax’ildan and Keyleth: love under a deadline
Vax’ildan and Keyleth are the tragic counterpoint. Their bond grows from mutual attraction into a relationship tested by Vax’s bargain and service to the Matron of Ravens. The obstacle is not a communication problem that can be solved through one conversation; it is the collision between love, mortality, and a supernatural duty Vax cannot simply resign from.
The official C3E121 recap says Keyleth learns that Vax has vanished and returned to the Matron’s service. That development defines the couple’s endpoint: their emotional connection endures, but ordinary domestic permanence is denied. Vaxleth is therefore a romance of sacrifice and separation rather than a conventional happily-ever-after.

Vax/Keyleth and Vex/Percy are often discussed together because both are major Vox Machina pairings, but they answer different romantic questions. Vex/Percy asks how attraction can become a stable partnership after years of danger. Vax/Keyleth asks what love means when duty and death impose a boundary neither partner can remove.
Pike and Scanlan: a later-life continuation
Pike and Scanlan are a secondary and more uneven thread during the campaign. Their importance becomes clearest in the official future-state material: Scanlan visits Pike, they affirm that they still love each other, and they agree to adventure together again.
That scene is best understood as a later-life continuation, not as Vox Machina’s central romance. It gives the pair a meaningful canon outcome without displacing the two dominant arcs involving Vex/Percy and Vax/Keyleth.

Campaign 2: the Mighty Nein’s ensemble of relationships
The Mighty Nein starts from a looser, more exploratory social structure. Romance develops in parallel with friendship, recovery, and the characters’ attempts to become trustworthy to one another. Instead of one central couple carrying the emotional burden, the campaign distributes that work across several pairings.
Fjord and Jester: from comic flirtation to a planned marriage
Fjord and Jester move from comic flirtation and mismatched confidence toward mutual trust. Their early energy is playful, but the relationship becomes more substantial as Fjord’s insecurity and Jester’s emotional openness meet in a shared future.
The official C3E115 recap records that they are planning their wedding. The later C3E121 future-state recap shows them discussing the wedding and assigning roles in the wedding party. Those details make Fjord/Jester the clearest Mighty Nein example of uncertainty converting into an explicit public commitment.
Their romance is also the campaign’s most visibly celebratory endpoint. The important change is not merely that they like each other; it is that they organize the people around them for a marriage they intend to hold.

Beauregard and Yasha develop through mutual recognition, grief, and the difficult process of becoming emotionally available. The official future-state recap says Beau plans to spend time at Veth’s camp with Yasha and that the two have been considering adoption. C3E115 also records their discussion of relationship maintenance and adoption. The endpoint is therefore domestic and forward-looking, but it is not presented as a neat resolution to every wound. Their commitment is expressed through plans, care, and the practical question of how to build a family.
Caleb and Essek: intimacy under political danger
Caleb and Essek are the Mighty Nein’s quietest major pairing and its most morally complicated. Their intimacy is inseparable from guilt, political danger, and the question of whether people who have done serious harm can build a future without pretending the past did not happen.
The official future-state recap identifies Essek as Caleb’s partner. It also describes Caleb making plans with him while worrying that the Bright Queen might find them. That detail keeps the romance canonically significant while preserving its central tension: a future together is possible, but it must remain hidden and politically precarious.
Caleb/Essek is therefore different from Fjord/Jester’s public wedding plans and Beau/Yasha’s family planning. Its commitment is real, yet secrecy is part of the relationship’s practical conditions.
Jester’s friendships are not automatically romances
Jester’s friendships with Beau, Nott/Veth, and the rest of the Nein are central to Campaign 2. They can be emotionally intense, funny, and deeply loyal without becoming romantic relationships in canon. Keeping that distinction prevents fan shipping from being mistaken for an explicit outcome and leaves room to appreciate the friendships on their own terms.
Campaign 3: Imogen and Laudna at the center
Bells Hells concentrates its romantic center more tightly than either earlier campaign. Imogen Temult and Laudna begin as close companions, and their relationship becomes inseparable from the campaign’s questions about trauma, identity, possession, and agency.
Imogen and Laudna: a romance tied to the supernatural conflict
Official recap evidence records their first kiss and Imogen’s promise that she had been thinking of Laudna constantly. A later recap records Imogen kissing Laudna again and the pair reconciling after conflict involving Delilah. Dani Carr’s official recap language is explicit: “I love Laudna and Imogen and Laudna and Imogen love each other.”
The relationship’s defining obstacle is not ordinary incompatibility. Laudna’s bond with Delilah creates an identity and agency crisis. Imogen must support Laudna while refusing to excuse Delilah’s manipulation or accept the idea that Laudna has ceased to be a distinct person.

C3E96 describes Imogen holding Laudna and challenging the idea that Laudna can no longer distinguish herself from Delilah. That moment shows why Imogen/Laudna is so integrated into the main plot: the couple’s emotional choices have consequences for the supernatural conflict itself. Love is not an escape from the danger; it becomes one of the ways the characters confront it.
The official C3E121 future-state recap gives the pair the newest campaign’s clearest domestic endpoint. Imogen and Laudna build a cottage in the Taloned Heights woods, continue going on adventures, and vacation in the Fey Realm. Their future combines home-building with continued action rather than treating domesticity and adventuring as opposites.
Orym and Dorian: a confirmed secondary romance
Campaign 3 also develops Orym and Dorian. During the crossover, Orym confesses that he has feelings for Dorian, and Dorian answers that Orym has always been the reason he is there.
That exchange confirms mutual feelings, making Orym/Dorian a canon secondary romance. It should still be distinguished from Imogen/Laudna’s campaign-long centrality: Orym and Dorian have less on-screen romantic development in the main campaign material, but the crossover provides an explicit mutual acknowledgment.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which campaign has the best romance?
There is no objective winner, but each campaign is strongest on a different axis.
Choose Campaign 1 for contrast and tragedy
Vox Machina offers the cleanest structural contrast. Vex/Percy demonstrates a relationship that survives into family life, while Vax/Keyleth turns love into a story about sacrifice and separation. If you want romance to sharpen the campaign’s themes of mortality and responsibility, Campaign 1 has the most dramatic range.
Choose Campaign 2 for breadth and gradual commitment
The Mighty Nein is the strongest ensemble romance. Fjord/Jester, Beau/Yasha, and Caleb/Essek do not repeat the same emotional pattern: one moves toward marriage, one toward family planning, and one toward a hidden future under political threat. If you prefer several relationships developing alongside friendship and healing, Campaign 2 offers the broadest field.

Choose Campaign 3 for plot integration and concentration
Bells Hells gives one relationship the most direct connection to the central supernatural conflict. Imogen/Laudna’s romance is repeatedly tested by grief, possession, identity, and agency, while Orym/Dorian adds a shorter but explicit secondary arc. If you want the main romance to influence the adventure’s core stakes, Campaign 3 is the most concentrated choice.

Canon status and common questions
Which Critical Role couples are canon?
The principal canon pairings covered here are Vex/Percy, Vax/Keyleth, Pike/Scanlan, Fjord/Jester, Beau/Yasha, Caleb/Essek, Imogen/Laudna, and Orym/Dorian. They do not all have identical levels of development or the same type of ending: some are shown through sustained campaign interaction, while others receive especially clear confirmation in official future-state or crossover material.
Do Fjord and Jester get married?
The published material establishes wedding planning, including discussion of the wedding and wedding-party roles. It does not require treating a completed ceremony as the key fact; the canon endpoint presented is an intended marriage and an organized future commitment.
Are Beau and Yasha together?
Yes. Official future-state material describes Beau and Yasha making plans together and considering adoption, while C3E115 records their discussion of maintaining the relationship and adoption. Their arc is a committed partnership with a domestic future.
Are Imogen and Laudna a couple?
Yes. Their kisses, reconciliation, explicit mutual-love language in official recap material, and the C3E121 future-state cottage establish them as a canon couple.
What is the difference between Vex/Percy and Vax/Keyleth?
Vex/Percy is the durable partnership that grows into family life in Whitestone. Vax/Keyleth is defined by love constrained by Vax’s service to the Matron of Ravens, leaving the pair emotionally connected but separated from an ordinary shared life.
A practical way to compare the arcs
When discussing these romances, use five questions rather than ranking chemistry by personal preference:
- How broad is the ensemble? Campaign 2 gives major romantic attention to the largest number of pairings.
- How quickly does the relationship become central? Campaign 3 places Imogen and Laudna near the emotional center early, while Campaign 1 develops romance within an already-established group.
- What kind of obstacle drives the story? Campaign 1 emphasizes duty and mortality; Campaign 2 emphasizes recovery, guilt, insecurity, and politics; Campaign 3 emphasizes possession, identity, and agency.
- How directly does romance affect the main plot? Imogen and Laudna’s conflict with Delilah makes their relationship unusually plot-integrated.
- What kind of endpoint matters to you? The official material offers family life, wedding planning, adoption planning, a hidden future, continued love after separation, and mutual feelings that are still comparatively new.
Using those questions keeps “best romance” from collapsing into a single popularity contest. The campaigns are doing different work with love: building a home, confronting death, recovering from harm, choosing a public future, protecting a private one, or defending a person’s identity against supernatural control.
