That gives the campaign more ways to explore its new world, Aramán, but it also makes continuity, cast coordination, and viewer orientation more demanding.
What changed in Critical Role Campaign 4?
Campaign 4 moves beyond Exandria into Aramán, a land shaped by dead gods and the aftermath of rebellion. Its story follows people connected to the execution of war hero Thjazi Fang. The central question, in the campaign’s official synopsis, is: “Without the Gods, what great deeds now fall to us? And who, or what, shall grab their crown for themselves?”
The other major change is structural. Rather than following one group throughout, the campaign uses three distinct rotating tables: the Soldiers, the Seekers, and the Schemers. Critical Role describes this as a “west-marches style Dungeons & Dragons campaign,” with the perspectives of those groups helping the show delve deeper into Aramán. Critical Role’s official Campaign 4 page has the campaign overview and current episode information.
What does a West Marches-style campaign mean here?
In this format, different groups of characters take turns exploring a shared setting. Campaign 4’s three tables are not simply separate stories: they inhabit the same world, so developments in one group’s adventures can matter to the others. The structure offers more room for distinct perspectives and story threads than a campaign centered on a single adventuring party.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That flexibility comes with a trade-off. A conventional single-party actual-play campaign can keep one set of protagonists, relationships, and immediate plot in view. With rotating tables, the story has more active protagonists and more cross-table possibilities, but viewers may need to keep track of which group has encountered which people, places, and consequences.
| Story element | Single-party campaign | Campaign 4’s rotating-table approach |
|---|---|---|
| Active protagonists | One central party | Three groups: Soldiers, Seekers, and Schemers |
| Continuity | Primarily follows one group’s events | Shared-world developments can connect across tables |
| Episode accessibility | One main cast of characters anchors the story | Viewers may need context for multiple groups and their threads |
| Cross-table payoff | Not a defining feature of the structure | Events and character fates can intertwine across perspectives |
| Narrative scope | Focused on one party’s experience | Broader exploration of Aramán through three perspectives |
Why is the format a challenge for the cast and production?
The challenge follows from the documented format; Critical Role has not published a numerical measure of the extra workload. A rotating cast and shared setting create several coordination demands:

Continuity across tables
An action at one table may change the world the others encounter. The campaign therefore has to preserve a coherent timeline and account for consequences across separate sessions and storylines.
Character and relationship tracking
With multiple protagonists, the show must establish how the characters and their connections fit together. Viewers also need enough context to understand why an event involving one group matters to another.

Performance and production coordination
Rotating tables require consistent handling of lore, rules, and chronology. The cast and production team have to keep separate adventures legible as parts of the same campaign.
Keeping viewers oriented
Some viewers may follow one table more closely than another. Episodes need to make their immediate stakes understandable while still contributing to the shared story, without assuming every viewer remembers every thread.

What does the format make possible?
The broader structure is also the payoff: three perspectives can uncover more of Aramán and let separate character fates intersect. Instead of treating the setting as a backdrop for one group alone, Campaign 4 can show how different people respond to the same world and its upheaval. Whether those connections feel rewarding depends on how clearly the campaign carries its threads from one table to another.
