FINAL FANTASY XIV was not simply shut down during Endwalker’s December 2021 launch. Square Enix said record activity overwhelmed the scale of its login services, producing long queues and congestion errors. The company also said it could not add capacity quickly because each new in-game World required tens of server machines, which were difficult to procure amid semiconductor and logistics disruptions.
What happened during Endwalker’s launch?
In a December 2021 notice, FINAL FANTASY XIV producer and director Naoki Yoshida said Early Access had brought the game its highest active-player count to that point and a record number of simultaneous logins. Connection demand exceeded the scale of the services, leading to long waits when players tried to log in. Square Enix’s account of the login errors describes congestion and admission controls—not a finding that every existing player was unable to play.
The queue itself was managed to limit strain. Square Enix said the queue cap was 17,000 players per logical data center at the time and that it planned to raise it to around 21,000 by deploying backup development servers. Those figures describe the December 2021 operating conditions, not current queue limits. Yoshida also warned that errors could send some players back to the end of a queue.
Why couldn’t Square Enix add servers immediately?
The planned durable fix was to add Worlds in the affected regions, but the publisher said it could not obtain enough hardware quickly. Yoshida explained that each World required “tens of ‘server machines’.” During the pandemic, COVID-19 countermeasures had halted some semiconductor factories or contributed to labor shortages, reducing chip output; logistics were also under pressure. Even after Square Enix made a larger-than-usual investment in securing equipment, lead times remained long. Yoshida said the company could not estimate when the semiconductor shortage would be resolved.

This was a server-side capacity and procurement problem, not a fault that players could fix by upgrading a PC or changing local settings. The terminology matters: a player-facing World runs within a logical data center, while a physical data center is a separate infrastructure facility. Square Enix did not disclose some physical facility locations for security reasons, according to contemporaneous reporting by Data Center Knowledge.
Why did Square Enix stop selling the game?
While congestion was severe, Square Enix temporarily suspended sales and delivery of the Starter Edition and Complete Edition to new players. This was a demand-management measure: limiting new arrivals could reduce pressure on login services while capacity was constrained. It did not add server hardware or resolve the supply problem.

In its January 2022 roadmap, Square Enix said digital sales would resume on January 25, alongside the opening of the Oceania data center. The company said it could suspend sales again if extreme congestion returned. The notice cited the need to serve new players in Oceania and a return toward more normal playtime and login frequency as factors in the decision. The January roadmap records the decision as it stood then.
How did the capacity plan unfold?
Square Enix said the Oceania data center had been planned before the launch congestion, but the company brought its opening forward by about two weeks. The January roadmap set January 25, 2022, as the opening date, with five Worlds available from launch. Patch 6.08 later marked the Oceanian data center’s opening in the official patch notes. The contemporaneous report identified its logical data center as Materia and listed its five Worlds as Bismarck, Ravana, Sephirot, Sophia, and Zurvan.

The publisher’s January plan also set out additional regional work. These were announced target dates, not independently confirmed completion dates:
| Region | Work announced in January 2022 | Target timing announced |
|---|---|---|
| Japan | Logical-data-center reconfiguration | Around July 2022 |
| North America | First expansion phase | Around August 2022 |
| North America | Second expansion phase | Spring or summer 2023 |
| Europe | First expansion phase | July 2022 |
| Europe | Second expansion phase | Summer 2023 |
These measures addressed different parts of the problem: new or reconfigured capacity could serve more players, while regional placement could improve access for players closer to the relevant infrastructure. In the meantime, queue controls and the temporary sales suspension limited demand; neither was a substitute for hardware.

Was the game completely unavailable?
The evidence supports a more precise description than a total outage. Square Enix documented record login demand, long waits, queue-related errors, and measures to keep the service from being overloaded. Those conditions could make logging in difficult, but the publisher’s notice does not establish that all existing players lost access to the game. The crisis was a severe access bottleneck during a major launch, compounded by a slow-to-expand hardware supply—not proof that every game service was down for everyone.
