The Nitro Deck is a controller shell: slide a compatible Switch into it and connect through USB-C. Tom’s Guide’s 2023 hands-on review describes a more comfortable-feeling setup for its reviewer, but that experience is personal rather than a guarantee for every player or hand size.

The trade-off is size. The grip adds width and depth, so the Switch is bulkier than it is with Joy-Cons attached. That can suit longer handheld sessions better than a slim setup, but it is less convenient if your priority is a compact console to carry around.

CRKD lists Hall Effect thumbsticks and swappable stick toppers. Hall Effect describes the stick-sensing technology; it is a manufacturer specification, not an independent durability or performance test. The product page also lists gyro compatibility and rumble.

Rear buttons and turbo
The rear buttons can be remapped, and CRKD lists turbo functionality. In Tom’s Guide’s review, the rear buttons took deliberate pressure and did not trigger accidentally during play. That is one reviewer’s observation, not a measured result across users or games.
USB-C connection and charging
The Nitro Deck connects to the console directly through USB-C rather than acting as a wireless controller while attached. CRKD lists low latency and pass-through charging, which allows charging while playing. The manufacturer’s low-latency description is a product claim, not a published comparative test.

Choose the Nitro Deck if a fuller grip, larger controls, remappable rear buttons, or Hall Effect sticks matter more to your handheld setup than keeping the console narrow. Stick with Joy-Cons if compactness is the priority or you do not want a separate controller shell.

CRKD and Tom’s Guide identify the original Nintendo Switch and Switch OLED as compatible. The cited product information does not establish compatibility with Nintendo Switch 2, so do not assume it will fit or work with that console. CRKD explicitly says the Nitro Deck does not support Amiibo.

Tom’s Guide reported in 2023 that the base Nitro Deck’s carry case was sold separately; that review described a case with room for eight physical Switch games and an included braided USB-C cable.
