For most Steam Machine owners, buy a modern gaming monitor—ideally a 4K 120Hz model. Valve’s published specification is built around digital DisplayPort 1.4 and HDMI 2.0 outputs, with support for high refresh rates, HDR and FreeSync. A CRT is still a legitimate enthusiast choice if you value its characteristic motion rendering, deep blacks, viewing angles and flexible low-resolution modes more than easy setup, widescreen sharpness and modern features. The deciding issue is not simply picture quality: it is whether the CRT’s input and scan ranges can be driven safely from a digital Steam Machine output.

The short answer

Choose a modern gaming monitor unless you already own a suitable CRT and specifically want its image characteristics. The most generally compatible target is a 4K 120Hz gaming monitor with an HDMI input that accepts the Steam Machine’s published mode and an adaptive-sync implementation compatible with your games. DisplayPort gives Steam Machine more headroom—up to 4K at 240Hz or 8K at 60Hz according to Valve—while HDMI 2.0 is specified up to 4K at 120Hz.

A CRT can work, but it is a conversion and compatibility project. Steam Machine exposes digital DisplayPort and HDMI connectors; most CRTs expect an analog signal such as VGA or BNC. You must match the converter to the CRT’s connector, horizontal and vertical scan ranges, and desired resolution. A passive cable that merely changes the plug shape should not be assumed to work.

What Steam Machine’s display specification tells you

Valve describes Steam Machine as a compact SteamOS gaming computer. Its published display specification is aimed at current digital displays rather than legacy analog monitors.

Output Published capability What it means for a monitor purchase
DisplayPort 1.4 Up to 4K at 240Hz or 8K at 60Hz; HDR, FreeSync and daisy-chaining support are listed Suitable for high-refresh 1440p or 4K displays and for monitors that expose their advanced modes over DisplayPort
HDMI 2.0 Up to 4K at 120Hz; HDR and FreeSync support are listed A 4K 120Hz monitor matches the documented HDMI ceiling without relying on an unlisted transport standard

Those figures describe the output capability, not a guarantee that every game will render at that resolution or frame rate. The game, SteamOS settings, graphics workload and the monitor’s own input limits all matter. Check the monitor’s manual for the exact refresh modes available on each connector; some displays reserve their highest mode for DisplayPort, while others limit chroma, HDR or adaptive sync on a particular HDMI input.

Modern gaming monitor: the practical default

Why 4K at 120Hz is a sensible target

A 4K 120Hz display uses the HDMI capability Valve explicitly lists and gives you a sharp 16:9 presentation with enough refresh headroom for responsive play. It is a recommendation by capability, not a claim that every Steam game will reach 120 frames per second at 4K. If a title renders at a lower frame rate, the monitor can still display it; the extra refresh capacity simply leaves room for games that are lighter or configured at a lower resolution.

When shopping, use the phrase “4K 120Hz gaming monitor” as a starting filter, then verify the individual specification. Confirm that 120Hz is available through the input you intend to use, that the monitor accepts the Steam Machine’s signal format, and that adaptive sync is supported over that same connection.

DisplayPort for higher refresh modes

DisplayPort 1.4 is the better fit when you want to exploit modes above 120Hz at 4K or consider an 8K 60Hz display. Valve lists up to 4K at 240Hz or 8K at 60Hz on this output. The monitor still has to advertise and accept the chosen mode; a DisplayPort connector alone does not make every resolution and refresh combination available.

HDR and FreeSync

Valve lists HDR and FreeSync support on the documented digital paths. On a compatible monitor, HDR can expand highlight and shadow range in games that provide an HDR mode, while FreeSync’s variable-refresh behavior can align the panel’s refresh timing with changing frame rates. Treat both as configuration features rather than automatic improvements: enable them in the monitor’s menu and SteamOS or game settings, and confirm that the selected input supports them.

Physical and everyday advantages

Modern LCD gaming monitors are lighter, shallower and generally use less power than CRTs. Their fixed pixel grid produces a crisp image at the native resolution, and widescreen formats fit current game interfaces without side borders. Digital cables carry the signal directly, so you avoid the scan-rate matching and analog-conversion steps required by a CRT.

When a CRT is the better personal choice

Motion rendering and response character

CRTs do not hold each frame on a fixed pixel grid in the same way an LCD does. Their scan behavior and phosphor response can produce motion that enthusiasts describe as unusually clear and immediate, particularly at high refresh rates. This is a perceptual and technical characteristic, not a promise of a lower measured latency for every setup. The result depends on the tube, its condition, the selected mode and the converter in front of it.

Black levels and viewing angles

A CRT can display very dark blacks without the backlight behavior associated with an LCD, and its picture generally remains viewable across a wide range of seating angles. These traits matter in dark games and in a room where several people watch the screen. They do not compensate for a tube’s age, geometry errors or the absence of modern HDR processing.

Flexible lower resolutions

A CRT can often accept several lower resolutions without the fixed-grid scaling softness you see when an LCD is driven below its native pixel count. That flexibility is useful for older games, pixel-art titles and performance-heavy games where you prefer a lower output resolution. “Flexible” does not mean unlimited: every tube has a specified horizontal and vertical scan range, and exceeding it can produce an unstable image or no image at all.

The costs of choosing a CRT

  • Connection work: Steam Machine’s published outputs are digital, while many CRTs use VGA, BNC or another analog input. Conversion hardware may be required.
  • Size and weight: CRT cabinets are substantially deeper and heavier than modern flat panels, which affects placement and transport.
  • Age and condition: Focus, convergence, brightness, geometry and tube wear vary from unit to unit. A previously reliable mode may not look the same on an aging tube.
  • Aspect ratio: Common CRT formats are 4:3 or 5:4, whereas current games and interfaces are usually designed around 16:9 widescreen layouts.
  • Power and heat: CRTs generally consume more power and produce more heat than a modern LCD of similar viewing size.
  • Feature gap: HDR and modern variable-refresh behavior are not native CRT features. You may need to run without them even though Steam Machine supports them digitally.

CRT versus modern monitor: the decision factors

Factor CRT Modern gaming monitor Practical consequence for Steam Machine
Signal compatibility Usually analog; connector and scan ranges vary by model Digital HDMI or DisplayPort inputs designed for current graphics outputs Modern monitors are plug-and-configure; CRTs require model-specific compatibility checks and possibly active conversion
Motion and latency feel Distinctive scan and phosphor behavior; enthusiasts value its motion rendering Depends on panel response, refresh rate and variable-refresh support Choose the CRT for its character, not because a universal latency number has been established
Resolution behavior Can be forgiving at several lower resolutions within the tube’s scan limits Sharpest at its native pixel grid; lower modes are scaled CRT favors retro and flexible-resolution use; modern panels favor crisp native output
Aspect ratio Often 4:3 or 5:4 Commonly 16:9 widescreen Modern panels match current game interfaces; CRTs may show borders or a narrower play area
HDR and adaptive sync Not native CRT features HDR and FreeSync are available on supported models and inputs Modern monitors make Steam Machine’s documented display features usable
Physical demands Deep, heavy and older hardware Thin, lighter and easier to position Measure the desk and plan safe lifting before committing to a CRT

How refresh rate, FPS and synchronization interact

Refresh rate and frames per second are different measurements. Steam Support defines refresh rate as how many times the display is illuminated each second; FPS is how often the game produces a new frame. A 120Hz monitor can refresh 120 times per second even when a game is rendering fewer frames.

When the game’s frame output and the display’s refresh timing do not align, you can see tearing—parts of two frames in one scan—or other artifacts. Steam Support notes that disabling V-Sync while FPS exceeds the display refresh rate can cause this behavior. V-Sync limits presentation to the display’s timing but can add waiting when the frame rate fluctuates. A compatible variable-refresh mode such as FreeSync can instead vary the display timing within its supported range. Whether that is available depends on the monitor, input and configuration.

Applying this to a CRT

Do not assume that a CRT’s reputation for smooth motion eliminates synchronization issues. The tube still scans at a selected refresh rate, and the converter may impose its own limits or buffering. Set a mode the CRT explicitly supports, then decide whether to use V-Sync or another frame-pacing option based on the game’s behavior.

Resolution and aspect-ratio choices

Modern monitor workflow

Start with the monitor’s native resolution and a refresh rate it accepts on the connected input. If a game cannot sustain that workload, lower the game’s render resolution or quality settings before abandoning the monitor’s native desktop mode. This preserves a consistent interface while letting the game scale internally where supported.

CRT workflow

Use the CRT’s documented scan ranges as the boundary. Select a resolution and refresh combination inside those limits, and expect a 4:3 or 5:4 image unless the tube and game support another geometry. Widescreen games may display side borders, crop the image or stretch it depending on the game and scaling path. Correct aspect ratio is usually preferable to filling every inch of the screen.

Why lower resolution is not automatically worse

On a CRT, a lower output can remain coherent because there is no fixed native pixel matrix to resample. On an LCD, a non-native signal is filtered to the panel grid and may look softer. The trade-off is that a modern panel gives you predictable sharpness, widescreen composition and digital features at its native mode.

Connecting a CRT to Steam Machine

The exact adapter cannot be named without the CRT model. Follow this sequence before buying hardware.

  1. Record the CRT’s input: identify whether it uses VGA, BNC or another connector. If it has multiple inputs, note which one accepts computer RGB rather than a television-only signal.
  2. Read the scan specifications: find the supported horizontal frequency, vertical refresh range and recommended resolutions in the manual or a reliable label on the unit. These values determine whether a proposed output mode is safe.
  3. Check the Steam Machine output you will use: choose DisplayPort or HDMI based on the converter’s input. The Steam Machine specification lists DisplayPort 1.4 and HDMI 2.0; a CRT adapter must accept one of those digital signals.
  4. Use active digital-to-analog conversion: HDMI-to-VGA or DisplayPort-to-VGA conversion requires electronics that create an analog signal. A passive plug adapter only changes the physical connector and should not be expected to translate the signal.
  5. Verify scan-rate support on the converter: some converters output only a narrow set of standard modes. Make sure one of those modes falls inside the CRT’s horizontal and vertical ranges.
  6. Connect with the Steam Machine powered down or the display input selected: attach the converter, cable and CRT, then power on and wait for the initial signal. If the screen remains blank, do not repeatedly force unsupported modes.
  7. Set a conservative mode first: in SteamOS display settings, select a resolution and refresh rate documented for both the converter and CRT. Test stability before trying a higher refresh or a less common resolution.
  8. Calibrate geometry: adjust the CRT’s size, position and convergence controls only within the manufacturer’s guidance. Save a known-good mode so you can recover after experimenting.
  9. Test games individually: check fullscreen behavior, aspect ratio, frame pacing and any launcher that changes resolution. A desktop mode that works does not prove that every game mode will.

Common CRT connection problems and fixes

No picture or “out of range” message

  • Switch back to the last known-good SteamOS display mode, or connect a modern digital monitor temporarily to regain access to settings.
  • Confirm that the converter accepts the Steam Machine output type and that the CRT cable is attached to the intended input.
  • Reduce resolution and refresh rate to a mode listed by both the converter and CRT. Do not keep sending a mode outside the tube’s scan range.

Picture rolls, flickers or loses sync

A rolling or unstable image usually indicates a scan-rate mismatch, an unsuitable converter or a marginal cable. Recheck horizontal and vertical limits, select a standard supported mode and test another active converter if the specifications do not overlap.

Image is stretched, squashed or bordered

Set the game and desktop to the CRT’s intended aspect ratio, then adjust in-game field-of-view and letterboxing options. Avoid stretching a 16:9 image to fill a 4:3 tube unless you accept distorted circles and characters.

Games tear despite a working picture

Match the game’s frame-pacing option to the CRT’s refresh rate. Enable V-Sync if uncapped FPS is exceeding the refresh rate and causing visible tears. If a converter or display path does not support variable refresh, do not expect FreeSync behavior simply because the Steam Machine output lists it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

HDR or adaptive sync options are missing

That is expected on many CRT paths. Check whether the monitor and the selected digital input support the feature; an analog conversion chain generally cannot provide the same HDR and FreeSync workflow as a modern digital monitor.

Buying checklist for a modern monitor

  • Resolution and refresh: begin with 4K at 120Hz if you want a direct match for the documented HDMI capability.
  • Input specification: verify the exact HDMI and DisplayPort versions and the refresh modes available on each port.
  • Adaptive sync: confirm FreeSync or another compatible variable-refresh mode works through the input you will use.
  • HDR implementation: check that HDR can be enabled on the intended input and at the refresh rate you plan to run.
  • Aspect ratio and size: choose a widescreen format if you want current game interfaces to fill the panel without CRT-style borders.
  • Ergonomics: account for stand depth, viewing distance, adjustment range and desk space before ordering.
  • Fallback modes: make sure the display accepts lower resolutions and refresh rates for older or demanding games.

Which one should you choose?

Your priority Better fit Reason
Simple setup with the published Steam Machine ports Modern gaming monitor Direct HDMI or DisplayPort connection avoids analog conversion
4K, HDR, widescreen interfaces and variable refresh Modern gaming monitor These features are part of the digital display specification
CRT-style motion, deep blacks and broad seating angles CRT Those are the tube’s distinctive strengths, provided the connection is compatible
Retro games at several lower resolutions CRT The tube can be more forgiving of non-native modes within its scan limits
Small desk, frequent moving or low power use Modern gaming monitor Flat panels are lighter, shallower and generally more efficient
You already own a CRT but do not know its scan ranges Neither until verified Identify the model and specifications before purchasing a converter or selecting an output mode

Bottom line for Steam Machine owners

A modern gaming monitor is the right answer for the majority of Steam Machine setups. A 4K 120Hz model uses the documented HDMI capability, while a DisplayPort monitor can take advantage of higher refresh modes; HDR, FreeSync and widescreen sharpness are available without an analog conversion chain. Choose a CRT only when its motion character, blacks, viewing angles or low-resolution flexibility are the reason you are building the setup. In that case, treat compatibility as part of the project: identify the CRT input and scan ranges, use an active converter matched to them, start with a conservative supported mode and test each game before settling on the arrangement.
