Crucial Mistakes to Avoid in RimWorld: Odyssey

Before launching in RimWorld: Odyssey, plan your gravship as a mobile colony, prepare life support and vac suits, and treat orbital destinations as hazardous expeditions.

Before taking a gravship into orbit in RimWorld: Odyssey, prepare it as a home that must keep its crew alive—not just as a vehicle. Plan for life support and outside work, treat destinations as dangerous, and check your game and mod versions before assuming unexpected behavior is a player mistake.

1. Building a gravship only for lift-off

Odyssey’s gravship can grow from a small craft into a mobile colony with bedrooms, laboratories, hospitals, and workshops. That makes it easy to under-plan: a ship that can travel is not necessarily prepared to support the people making the trip.

Plan the ship around the crew’s needs and the trips you expect to make. Consider where colonists will sleep, recover, work, and handle emergencies while away from the main settlement. This is a planning principle inferred from the ship’s role as a mobile colony, not a guaranteed layout or tested blueprint. Ludeon’s Odyssey announcement describes the gravship’s growth and purpose.

2. Expanding without planning how to find gravcores

Gravcores are a progression resource required to expand a gravship and travel farther. They are associated with dangerous locations, including insect-infested caverns, trapped ancient reactors, crashlanded space wrecks, and orbital platforms. Expansion therefore depends on more than adding ship space: you must be ready to locate and recover the resources.

Do not assume one destination guarantees a gravcore or that a particular number will be enough for your plans. The official feature descriptions do not establish a guaranteed route or exact quantity. Treat each opportunity as a potentially hazardous expedition and make sure the crew and ship can support the trip. Ludeon’s announcement describes gravcores and their listed sources.

3. Entering space without life-support and EVA preparation

Space requires preparation for both the ship’s interior and colonists who leave it. Ludeon’s product page names airtight walls, heaters, oxygen pumps, airlocks with vacuum barriers, and vac suits for spacefaring colonists. Its guidance is explicit: “Build airlocks with vac barriers to prevent depressurization of the ship, and equip spacefaring colonists with vac suits before they exit into the void.” —Ludeon Studios

  • Build with airtight walls.
  • Include heaters and oxygen pumps.
  • Use airlocks with vacuum barriers.
  • Equip colonists with vac suits before they go outside.

These are the named preparation requirements, not a verified room layout. The product page does not document every system interaction or certify a particular design as safe, so avoid treating a copied floor plan as proof that the ship is ready. RimWorld Odyssey Expansion Pack

4. Treating orbital sites as uncontested loot stops

Orbital platforms and satellites can offer loot, but they may also contain hostile salvage crews, fugitives, turrets, traps, and mechanoids. An asteroid mine has a different draw and risk: mineral veins such as plasteel, uranium, and gold, alongside pirates and space debris. The site descriptions support preparation for threats; they do not promise a safe or predictable encounter.

Orbital platforms and satellites Loot Hostile salvage crews, fugitives, turrets, traps, and mechanoids Prepare for combat and hazards; the official descriptions do not specify a universal time limit.
Asteroid mines Plasteel, uranium, and gold veins Pirates and space debris Enter and leave promptly; the product page explicitly warns visitors to get in and out quickly.

Decide what you want from a destination before landing, and make a retreat part of the plan rather than an afterthought. Ludeon’s announcement and official product page describe these destinations and hazards.

5. Assuming a shuttle or gravship issue is always player error

Some behaviors that might look like construction mistakes have appeared in official patch notes as bugs and fixes. Ludeon’s changelog through August 5, 2025, records fixes involving quest shuttles landing on water and damaging buildings, player shuttles lost to water, scrambled power connections after a gravship launch, invalid gravship facilities on substructure, and diagonal walls incorrectly leaking vacuum. These are historical fixes, not evidence that the problems remain in current builds. Official Steam update notes

Before redesigning a ship around a suspected defect, check the game version and current patch notes. A dated fix can explain an older save or report, but it cannot by itself establish the status of a present-day issue.

6. Updating without checking mod compatibility

At the 1.6 release, Ludeon said unmodded 1.5 saves load in 1.6, while warning that some mods had not been updated and would not work in 1.6. That statement describes the 1.5-to-1.6 transition; it is not a guarantee that every mod works with every later game version.

When a modded ship behaves unexpectedly after an update, check the game version and the version supported by each relevant mod before attributing the behavior to Odyssey itself. Compatibility can change as mod authors update their work. Ludeon’s Odyssey release announcement and FAQ
