Crunchyroll announced Mass for the Dead in March 2020 as its newest game, but the English version’s launch was on April 21, 2020. It was a dark fantasy mobile RPG based on Overlord; the international version was later reported to have ended service in March 2021.
What is Mass for the Dead?
Mass for the Dead is a dark fantasy mobile RPG based on the Overlord anime and light novel franchise. Crunchyroll described it in its March 31, 2020 announcement as “a new dark fantasy mobile RPG based on the popular dark fantasy isekai anime Overlord.” Its “latest game” wording referred to Crunchyroll’s lineup at that time, not a new 2026 release. Crunchyroll’s announcement also identifies Kugane Maruyama as the author of the source light novel.
Announced gameplay
The announcement listed turn-based command battles, capture quests, competitions with friends, auto mode, and double-speed play. These are features Crunchyroll said the game offered; they are not based on a hands-on assessment here. The Japanese game was co-produced by Sumitomo and Exys.
How it relates to the Overlord novels
The game draws on the Overlord franchise. Reading the light novels is optional source material for readers interested in the setting, not a required companion purchase or a separate edition of the game.

When did Mass for the Dead come out?
Crunchyroll announced pre-registration on March 31, 2020, and planned a Western launch for spring. Exys later said the English version began distribution on April 21, 2020, in more than 100 countries and regions, mainly in North America and Europe. That figure describes the announced distribution footprint, not the number of players or current availability. Exys’s April 24, 2020 release gives the launch details.
Is Mass for the Dead still available?
The English/international version was reported to have ended service on March 31, 2021, at 08:00 German time. Anime2You reported in February 2021 that an in-game notice set that as the final service time and March 1, 2021, as the end of in-app purchases. This is secondary reporting; the dates should be understood as what Anime2You reported from the notice, not as independently confirmed here. The report does not establish why the service closed. A Japanese Google Play listing for MASS FOR THE DEAD OVERLORD was visible at the time of the store information cited here. It describes an original-story dark fantasy RPG and lists Android and Windows; Google Play says the listing was updated August 30, 2026. That establishes a Japanese listing, not that the English version is available or that the Japanese app can be accessed in every country. The Google Play listing is the source for its description, platforms, and update date.
