The Crusader relic armor and weapons from Knights of the Nine scale with your character, and the strongest versions are reached at level 21. In the original Oblivion, commonly cited guidance says the Priory of the Nine armor stand can convert relics to versions appropriate for your current level, so collecting them early is less final. The two releases should not be treated as having identical item-leveling systems.
The short answer by edition
| Release | How Crusader gear scales | Best timing if you want maximum starting stats | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oblivion Remastered | PC Gamer’s April 29, 2025 guide says the relic armor and weapons scale with character level. | Reach level 21 before collecting the relics. The guide says defense values and enchantments reach their strongest versions at level 21 or higher. | The level-21 guidance is specifically for Remastered. It does not automatically establish the same threshold in the 2006 release. |
| Original Oblivion | Frequently cited UESP item guidance says the Priory of the Nine armor stand can convert the relics to variants suited to your current level. | If you collect them early, use the Priory stand when you are at the level you want the items to reflect. | The specialist UESP page is unconfirmed, so treat the stand behavior as original-game guidance rather than a guaranteed Remastered feature. |
“Crusader armor” means the relic gear awarded through the Knights of the Nine downloadable content. The relevant question is therefore not whether ordinary armor improves automatically as you level; it is when these quest rewards are generated or updated.

How scaling affects a character
A level-scaled reward has multiple versions. The game chooses a version based on the character level used when the reward is generated, or, in the original game’s commonly described stand system, when the relic is converted there. A higher-level version can have better protection and stronger enchantments than an early version.

Bethesda’s Oblivion manual explains that protection depends on the armor itself, your skill with that armor type, and the item’s condition. A high-level relic can therefore perform worse than its listed potential if you have little skill in the relevant armor type or allow it to become damaged.

Do not read “the gear levels with you” as “the gear becomes stronger every time you gain a level.” In Remastered, the published guidance identifies a strongest tier at level 21. In the original game, the stand is described as a way to update the relics, but the exact implementation and level breakpoints should be kept edition-specific.
Oblivion Remastered: wait until level 21 for the top tier
PC Gamer’s guide to starting Knights of the Nine, published April 29, 2025, states that the strongest Crusader armor and weapon versions become available at level 21 or higher. It also says their defense statistics and enchantments top out at that threshold. If your priority is maximum stats from the moment you receive the relics, level 21 is the practical target.
What you can do before level 21
You can begin the Knights of the Nine quest line earlier. Starting the downloadable content and collecting its rewards are separate decisions, however. Bethesda’s support guidance for Remastered describes leveling as raising Major and Minor Skills and then sleeping, and notes that enemies scale with your character. That makes it reasonable to plan the reward timing around your intended playthrough level rather than rushing to the first available relic.

Recommended Remastered sequence
- Confirm that you are playing Remastered. The level-21 recommendation applies to that release, not automatically to the original game.
- Start Knights of the Nine whenever you want. Beginning the quest does not require you to claim every relic immediately.
- Continue leveling through normal play. In Remastered, character level advances after the skill increases and sleep cycle described by Bethesda.
- Reach level 21 before the reward-collection point. This is the threshold identified by the 2025 guide for the strongest armor and weapon variants.
- Maintain the equipment after you receive it. Repair damaged armor and build the relevant armor skill; item level alone does not determine the protection shown in combat.
If you already collected a relic at a lower level, no published Remastered documentation establishes that it provides the original game’s Priory stand conversion. Do not assume that placing the item on the old stand will regenerate a higher-tier version unless your edition’s own documentation or in-game behavior confirms it.
Original Oblivion: the Priory armor stand is the key distinction
For the original release, commonly quoted UESP item information describes the armor stand in the Priory of the Nine as a conversion point for the Crusader relics. Under that guidance, placing a relic on the stand can produce a variant appropriate to your character’s current level. This is why older advice often tells players not to panic after obtaining the gear early: the stand is intended to let the equipment be updated later.
Rank #2
The specialist reference does not establish that the same conversion procedure exists in Remastered. Use the stand guidance only for the original game and verify that the item is being converted before disposing of an older copy.
A cautious original-game workflow
- Keep the relic after receiving it. Do not sell, drop, or overwrite an early version while you are deciding when to finalize it.
- Return to the Priory of the Nine. The stand is the location associated with the commonly cited conversion behavior.
- Use the stand at the character level you want reflected. The quoted guidance describes variants appropriate to the current level.
- Inspect the resulting item. Check its name, armor value, enchantment and condition before assuming the conversion worked.
- Repair and train the applicable armor skill. The manual’s protection formula still applies after conversion.
Because no directly verified source lists every level breakpoint for the original release, there is no supported “original game maximum level” to put beside Remastered’s level 21. The safe conclusion is functional: the original stand is commonly reported as an updating mechanism, while Remastered’s published guide gives a clear level-21 cap for the strongest tier.
Should you delay the Knights of the Nine quest?
There is no single correct level to begin the content. Choose based on whether you value immediate access, role-playing pace or optimized equipment.
| Your priority | Remastered choice | Original-game choice |
|---|---|---|
| Use the Crusader gear as soon as possible | Start and collect it early, accepting that it may be below the level-21 tier. | Collect it early, then use the Priory stand later if the conversion works as described. |
| Get the strongest initial stats | Begin the quest if you like, but wait to collect the relics until level 21 or above. | Use the stand at your intended level rather than assuming the Remastered threshold. |
| Avoid managing level timing | Play normally and accept the version generated at the time you claim it. | Keep the relics safe and check the stand when you are ready to finalize them. |
Waiting is an optimization, not a requirement for completing the quest. Early versions remain usable, and your actual performance also depends on skill and condition. The practical cost of delaying is that you spend more of the game without the relics’ benefits; the benefit is stronger equipment when you finally equip it.
Why level, skill and condition are easy to confuse
Character level is an item-generation rule
The level-21 figure concerns which Remastered reward tier is generated. It is not a statement that your character must have 21 points in Heavy Armor, Light Armor or any other skill.

Armor skill changes effective protection
Bethesda’s manual separates the armor’s own protection from the player’s skill with that armor type. Two characters wearing the same Crusader piece can therefore receive different practical protection.
Condition changes performance over time
Combat damage reduces item condition. The manual states that damaged armor gives less protection, so repair the relics when their condition falls. A repaired low-level item does not become a level-21 item, but a level-21 item that is damaged will still underperform until repaired.

- Check the edition first. A level-21 Remastered guide cannot be applied wholesale to the original release.
- Inspect the item’s condition. Repair damage before comparing protection.
- Check your armor skill and armor type. The manual identifies skill as part of the protection calculation.
- Confirm when the reward was generated. In Remastered, an early collection may mean an early-tier item.
- For original Oblivion, revisit the Priory stand. The commonly cited guidance says it can convert relics to a current-level variant; verify the resulting item’s statistics rather than assuming the process occurred.
- Do not expect every version to use the same reset behavior. Published guidance establishes the stand guidance for the original game and the level-21 cap for Remastered, not a shared cross-edition system.
FAQs
Can I start Knights of the Nine before level 21 in Remastered?
Yes. The level-21 advice concerns when the strongest relic versions are available, not a requirement to begin the quest. You can start earlier and postpone collecting the gear if you want the top tier.
Does level 21 mean every Crusader item keeps improving after that?
No. The published Remastered guide describes level 21 or higher as the point where the strongest armor and weapon versions, including their defense values and enchantments, are reached.
Will the original Priory armor stand definitely re-level my Remastered relics?
That is not established by the cited evidence. The stand behavior is commonly described for original Oblivion; do not silently transfer that rule to Remastered.

Why is my high-level Crusader armor not giving the protection I expected?
Check condition and your skill with the armor type. Bethesda’s manual says both affect protection in addition to the armor’s own properties.
