Short answer: use Confederate Partition when you are still waiting for stronger innovations and can tolerate a divided inheritance; switch to Primogeniture as soon as its innovation and law conditions are met if preserving one realm matters most; choose Elective only when you can reliably control the electors and the eligible candidates for the specific title. Partition is available early but can split your territory, Primogeniture is predictable and keeps every title with one heir, and Elective trades certainty for political control.

The right choice depends on four questions: how much cohesion you need after your ruler dies, whether the law is currently available, how much control you have over the succession decision, and which failure you can survive—fragmented land, a delayed law change, or losing an election.

Succession laws at a glance

Law What happens at succession Availability Control and principal risk
Confederate Partition Titles are divided among eligible children; the player heir keeps the primary title, capital and associated direct de jure titles. New titles can be created for younger children when enough land is held. Common in early feudal and tribal play; tribal rulers are locked to it. You can plan which titles exist before death, but division is unavoidable under the law. Main risk: fragmentation and landed sibling rivals.
Primogeniture The oldest eligible child, the player heir, receives every title. Younger children receive no titles under this law. Usually later; requires the innovation_primogeniture innovation or a historical access trigger, plus government-specific change conditions. Maximum predictability and cohesion once available. Main risks are waiting for access and being stuck with an eldest heir you do not want.
Elective The ruler and direct vassals nominate a title heir from eligible close family and vassals, then votes determine the result. Varies by title law, government, culture and eligible electors. Potentially strong control when you dominate the electorate, but the preferred candidate can lose. Each title can have its own succession law.

The table describes the strategic effect of each system. For exact eligibility, costs and change conditions in your version, read the active law tooltip in game; these rules are patch-sensitive.

How Confederate Partition divides your realm

The current Confederate Partition entry says that titles are divided equally between your children. The player heir always receives the primary title, the realm capital and the direct de jure titles associated with that primary title. Other eligible children then receive available titles, starting with titles at the primary-title rank and moving down through lower ranks. If you control enough land, the game can create new titles for those heirs during succession. See the current law entry at CK3 Database’s Confederate Partition page.

Why a large realm can split unexpectedly

Confederate Partition does not merely distribute titles that already exist. Its title-creation behavior can produce a new kingdom or duchy for a younger child when your holdings meet the creation requirements. That means a ruler who appears to have one stable realm on the succession screen can still leave behind multiple independent title centers after death. The player heir keeps the main title and capital, but a newly created title may give a sibling a powerful base.

Who receives what

The law first protects the player heir’s primary title and its capital. Younger eligible children receive the remaining titles according to rank and availability. The exact distribution depends on your title hierarchy and holdings at the moment of death, so inspect the succession preview rather than assuming every child will receive an identical county count.

Confederate, Regular and High Partition

Confederate Partition, Regular Partition and High Partition are separate laws in the succession family. Moving away from Confederate Partition removes the automatic title-creation behavior documented for that law, but the precise share each heir receives depends on the law currently active. Read the tooltip for the exact title split in your patch before changing laws; do not infer the result from the name alone.

Cost and early-game role

The Confederate Partition entry records a 500-prestige base cost in CK3 Database data labeled patch 1.20.1.1 (2026). Treat that as a patch-specific base value, not a universal price: other requirements and costs can vary with government and context. Confederate Partition is nevertheless the practical starting point for many feudal and tribal rulers because stronger succession systems are gated behind later innovations or title-specific conditions.

Why Primogeniture is the cohesion benchmark

Under Primogeniture Succession, the oldest eligible child inherits all titles. The law defines that child as the player heir; younger children receive nothing from the title succession itself. The result is a single title-holder after death, which makes Primogeniture the most predictable option for preserving a centralized realm. The law’s current effects and cost are listed at CK3 Database’s Primogeniture page.

The innovation gate

Primogeniture is normally unavailable until your culture has the innovation_primogeniture innovation, although a historical access trigger can provide an alternative in some starts. The conditions for actually changing the law can differ by government, so having the innovation does not by itself guarantee an immediate switch. Open the succession-law tooltip and verify every listed condition before committing resources or planning around a date.

Cost and timing

The same entry records a 500-prestige base cost in patch 1.20.1.1 data. Piety and other requirements vary by context. Because the law arrives later than Confederate Partition for many rulers, a successful dynasty usually has to survive at least one partition phase before it can consolidate under a single heir.

The trade-off Primogeniture does not remove

Primogeniture solves title division, not every succession problem. The oldest eligible child still becomes the player heir, so an undesirable eldest child remains the designated successor unless another valid game mechanic changes eligibility. The law also does not accelerate access: you must still satisfy the innovation, government and law-change conditions. Its advantage is certainty about where the titles go once those conditions are met.

How Elective succession works

Confederation Elective lets the ruler and all direct vassals nominate a title heir from eligible close family members and vassals. Voting strength is primarily influenced by the ruler’s and electors’ fame, devotion and the number of count-tier vassals. The current effects and patch-labeled cost are documented at CK3 Database’s Confederation Elective page.

Elective is attached to a title

Elective is not a single realm-wide switch that automatically governs every possession. A duchy, kingdom or other title can have its own title succession law, and that title-level law can override the succession you expect from the realm’s main law. Check each important title separately, especially when you hold multiple high-rank titles.

Who can win

The candidate pool includes eligible close family and vassals, while the ruler and direct vassals form the electorate. A preferred child is therefore not guaranteed to inherit simply because you nominate them. Fame, devotion and the composition of your count-tier vassals can shift the result, and a candidate with a stronger political network may win even when that candidate is not your first choice.

When Elective gives you real control

Elective is strongest when you know exactly who can vote, which candidates qualify and how much voting strength each side has. It can place a younger or otherwise preferred relative on a title instead of following birth order. That flexibility is valuable for a title that needs a specific successor, but it demands continuing political management rather than a one-time law change.

Cost and uncertainty

The Confederation Elective entry records a 500-prestige base cost in data labeled patch 1.20.1. Costs, eligibility and available elective variants are patch-sensitive. Confirm the law panel in your current version before spending prestige or assuming that a particular title supports the same electorate.

How the three laws compare in practice

Realm cohesion after death

Primogeniture is the clear leader because one eligible child receives every title. Confederate Partition is the least cohesive: titles are divided and new titles can be created. Elective sits between them only if the vote produces a candidate who can hold the realm together; a lost election can be more disruptive than a predictable partition.

Availability and prerequisites

Confederate Partition is associated with early feudal and tribal conditions, and tribal rulers are locked to it. Primogeniture is a later goal tied to innovation_primogeniture or historical access plus government-specific change conditions. Elective depends on the particular title, government, culture and elector rules, so its availability cannot be inferred from the realm’s main succession law.

Player control

Partition gives you planning control over the titles and land you hold, but not over the basic division among eligible children. Primogeniture gives the most predictable outcome once unlocked, although it fixes the eldest eligible child as heir. Elective can offer the most direct influence over a preferred candidate, provided your fame, devotion and vassal relationships produce enough votes.

Failure mode

Choose the law whose failure you can afford. Partition risks fragmentation and powerful sibling branches. Primogeniture’s practical failure is delayed access or an unacceptable eldest heir. Elective’s failure is losing the ballot or electing a candidate who weakens the realm. These are strategic implications of the documented mechanics, not published probabilities.

A practical succession plan

  1. Open the succession-law and succession-preview panels before you commit. Record the current primary title, capital, direct de jure titles and the children listed as eligible heirs.
  2. Check whether the active law is Confederate Partition. If it is, look for titles that could be created for younger children and identify which existing titles would leave the player heir.
  3. Check your progression requirements. For Primogeniture, verify innovation_primogeniture or a historical access trigger and every government-specific law-change condition. For Elective, verify that the title supports the law and inspect the eligible elector and candidate lists.
  4. Choose the failure you can absorb. Keep Confederate Partition if a divided but viable realm is preferable to delaying your development; pursue Primogeniture if one centralized successor is essential; use Elective when you can demonstrate that your chosen candidate has a reliable voting path.
  5. Review every high-rank title individually. Title-level succession can override the realm’s general expectation, particularly under Elective. Do not assume that changing one law changes all titles.
  6. Recheck immediately before the ruler’s death. Eligibility, title ownership and elector composition can change during a reign. The final succession preview is the authoritative forecast for that death.

How to keep a Confederate realm manageable

If Primogeniture is still unavailable, treat partition as a planning problem rather than a surprise. Keep the realm compact enough that a younger child cannot receive a newly created high-rank title that rivals the player heir. Track which titles already exist, which titles are close to creation and which direct de jure titles belong with the capital. The objective is not to make Confederate Partition behave like Primogeniture—it cannot—but to make the resulting division survivable.

Before each succession, inspect the order in which titles will be assigned. The player heir’s primary title and capital are fixed anchors. The remaining titles should be evaluated for the strength and location of the sibling realms they will create. If a planned title change removes Confederate Partition’s automatic creation behavior by moving you to another partition law, use that law’s own tooltip to calculate the new shares rather than assuming the old distribution still applies.

Is Elective better than Primogeniture?

Usually not as a general replacement. Primogeniture is better when your priority is a predictable, unified realm and you accept the oldest eligible child as successor. Elective is better for a specific title when you have a clearly superior candidate and enough political leverage to make the vote reliable. It is also more demanding: the electorate and candidate pool must be monitored for every title, and a successful nomination on one title does not guarantee the same result elsewhere.

A useful rule is to make Primogeniture your default long-term target and Elective a deliberate political tool. If you cannot explain who votes, why your candidate is eligible and how your voting strength compares with opponents, Elective is a gamble rather than a control mechanism.

Decision guide

  • Early feudal or tribal ruler: use Confederate Partition while building the innovations and resources needed for a later law. Plan around the capital, primary title and possible title creation.
  • Innovation and law conditions complete: choose Primogeniture when preserving one centralized realm outweighs the cost and when the oldest eligible child is an acceptable heir.
  • Strong fame, devotion and cooperative direct vassals: consider Elective on a carefully selected title, after confirming the candidate and electorate for that title.
  • Several important titles with different laws: audit them separately. A favorable result on the realm’s main title does not automatically settle succession for every duchy or kingdom.
  • Uncertain electorate or candidate: avoid relying on Elective for the title that holds your realm together; predictable succession is safer than a vote you cannot model.

Bottom line

Confederate Partition is the early-game compromise: it is accessible, but it divides titles and can create new ones for younger children. Primogeniture is the strongest answer to “How do I stop my realm from splitting?” once its innovation and law requirements are met, because the oldest eligible child receives everything. Elective can outperform both for a carefully managed title, but only when you understand the title-specific electorate, candidate rules and voting strength well enough to make the result dependable.
