For a knee injury, crutches are generally the more relevant choice when a clinician recommends offloading and you can use them safely. A knee scooter supports the affected leg bent over a pad and is primarily described for foot, ankle, and lower-leg recovery—not as a default aid for an injured knee. Ask your care team before using one.
How to choose between crutches and a knee scooter
The decision depends on the injury, your prescribed weight-bearing limit, your balance and strength, and the routes you need to navigate. An injury label alone does not tell you whether you may put weight through the leg: your clinician may prescribe non-weight-bearing, toe-touch, partial weight-bearing, or weight-bearing as tolerated.
The American Society of Pain and Neuroscience STEP consensus guideline recommends crutches after knee injury for younger patients with good balance and upper-body strength. That recommendation is not a rule for every age or ability. If crutches do not feel safe or cause substantial pain, contact your treating team or a physical therapist to assess another aid, such as a walker or wheelchair.
What each aid asks of you
Crutches
Crutches can help keep weight off a knee without resting it on a scooter pad. They require balance, technique, and effort from your hands and arms. Poor fit can make them uncomfortable or unsafe, so ask for instruction and adjustment rather than guessing. Cleveland Clinic notes that your healthcare provider will tell you which kind of crutches you need and for how long: Cleveland Clinic crutches guidance.

Knee scooter
A knee scooter rolls on wheels while the affected leg rests bent, with the knee and upper lower leg supported on a pad. That position may not suit a knee injury, so obtain clinician approval before trying one. Scooters still require balance and strength and control in the uninjured leg; they reduce upper-body demands but do not remove the need to steer and stop safely.
Match the aid to your restrictions and surroundings
- Weight-bearing: Confirm exactly how much weight, if any, you may put through the injured leg. Use only an aid and technique that comply with that instruction.
- Balance and strength: Crutches need upper-body strength and balance. A scooter needs balance and a controlled, strong uninjured leg. If neither feels secure, ask about alternatives instead of improvising.
- Stairs and terrain: Crutches may be used on stairs after training and with care. Alberta Health Services advises: “Do not use a knee scooter on stairs or steps.” Slopes and uneven ground also make scooter use more difficult; keep it slow.
- Fit and practice: Have crutches adjusted and learn the prescribed technique. Adjust a scooter’s pad and handlebars according to clinical guidance and the manufacturer’s instructions.
What the knee-scooter evidence does—and does not—show
A 2022 retrospective case series surveyed people after foot and ankle surgery, not people being treated for knee injuries. Of 196 people solicited, 101 responded; the authors reported that 25 respondents had fallen from a scooter, five reported injuries, and one needed medical attention. In that same cohort, 96% reported high satisfaction and preferred the scooter to crutches. Respondents averaged 56.4 years of age, BMI 28.5, and 6.7 weeks of scooter use. These are findings about that specific foot-and-ankle surgery group, not estimates for all users or a head-to-head test for knee injuries. 2022 study abstract.
