crxf_rtf.dll Not Found: Crystal Reports Fixes That Work

Length13 min Posted Quest giverVGSources Team
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

crxf_rtf.dll is a Crystal Reports export component, not a Windows system file, and its absence usually means the parent Crystal Reports application or runtime is damaged. Repair or reinstall the exact Crystal Reports application and matching 32-bit or 64-bit runtime instead of downloading this DLL into System32.

What this file actually does

crxf_rtf.dll is the Rich Text and MSWord Format DLL for Crystal Reports. It provides Crystal Reports with export support for Rich Text Format and Microsoft Word-compatible output.

The file is associated historically with Crystal Decisions and Business Objects Crystal Reports installations. It has appeared in older Crystal Reports generations, including Crystal Reports 8.5, Crystal Reports 9, Crystal Reports XI and XI R2, and Crystal Reports 2008 deployments. Newer applications may use a bundled Crystal Reports runtime with a different deployment layout.

This is an application DLL, not a component of Windows 10 or Windows 11. It should normally be located in the Crystal Reports installation directory or beside an application that embeds the Crystal runtime. A copy found in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 is not automatically correct.

#1 Best Overall
Microsoft Windows 11 (USB)
  • Less chaos, more calm. The refreshed design of Windows 11 enables you to do what you want effortlessly.
  • Biometric logins. Encrypted authentication. And, of course, advanced antivirus defenses. Everything you need, plus more, to protect you against the latest cyberthreats.
  • Make the most of your screen space with snap layouts, desktops, and seamless redocking.
  • Widgets makes staying up-to-date with the content you love and the news you care about, simple.
  • Stay in touch with friends and family with Microsoft Teams, which can be seamlessly integrated into your taskbar. (1)

You may see any of these messages:

  • “This application failed to start because crxf_rtf.dll was not found.”
  • “The program can’t start because crxf_rtf.dll is missing from your computer.”
  • “Error loading crxf_rtf.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
  • “The file crxf_rtf.dll is missing or corrupted.”
  • “Failed to export the report.”
  • “Invalid export DLL or export format.”

The last two messages are particularly useful clues. If reports open normally but exporting to RTF or Word fails, the export module or one of its dependencies is more likely to be damaged than the entire Crystal Reports installation.

Cause-by-symptom guide

What you see Most likely cause Best first action
The application will not start Missing or damaged Crystal runtime Repair the parent application
Reports open but RTF or Word export fails Missing export module or dependency Repair the Crystal installation and check export files
The error began after moving to another PC Incomplete deployment or missing runtime Install the vendor’s complete package
The error appeared after an update Runtime generation or architecture mismatch Reinstall the version required by the application
Antivirus quarantined the file Security software removed a legitimate component or detected an altered copy Check quarantine and repair from trusted media
“The specified module could not be found” appears while the file exists A dependent DLL is missing Reinstall the complete runtime and inspect loader errors
regsvr32 reports that an entry point is missing The DLL is not a self-registering COM component Stop using regsvr32 for this file
Several Windows features or applications are also failing Possible Windows component corruption Run DISM, then SFC

Fix 1: Identify the application that owns the file

Before replacing anything, identify which program is trying to load crxf_rtf.dll. The filename alone does not tell you which Crystal Reports generation or runtime package is required.

Check the error window

Look at the title bar and full message. It may name:

  • A company’s accounting or business application
  • A reporting server or desktop client
  • A custom .NET application
  • Crystal Reports Designer
  • A legacy application running through Citrix or Remote Desktop
  • A service or scheduled reporting process

Write down the application name and whether the failure occurs during startup or only during export.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check installed programs

  1. Press Windows and type Installed apps.
  2. Open Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
  3. Search for the application named in the error.
  4. Also search for Crystal Reports, SAP Crystal Reports, BusinessObjects, or Crystal Reports runtime.
  5. Open the application’s details and note its publisher and installed version if shown.

For a classic desktop program:

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Enter appwiz.cpl.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Look for the parent application and any Crystal Reports runtime entries.

Do not assume that the newest runtime is the correct one. A legacy application may require a particular Crystal Reports generation or service pack.

Check the installation folder

Right-click the application’s shortcut and choose Open file location. If that opens a shortcut folder, right-click the shortcut again and select Open file location.

Look for folders named:

  • Crystal
  • Crystal Reports
  • BusinessObjects
  • bin
  • runtime
  • x86
  • x64

Search within the application directory for crxf_rtf.dll. If it is present, do not immediately copy it elsewhere. Its presence means the loader may instead be failing to find one of its dependent DLLs, or the application may be looking in the wrong directory.

Fix 2: Repair the parent Crystal Reports application

Repair is the safest first fix because it restores the complete set of Crystal files, registry information, export modules, and dependencies together.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Repair through Windows Settings

  1. Press Windows + I.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
  4. Find the application that displays the error.
  5. Select the three-dot menu beside it.
  6. Choose Advanced options, if available.
  7. Select Repair.
  8. Follow the prompts.
  9. Restart Windows.
  10. Open the application and test the same report or export operation.

Not every traditional desktop program exposes an Advanced options page. If Repair is unavailable, use Control Panel.

Repair through Control Panel

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type appwiz.cpl.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Select the parent application.
  5. Click Change, Modify, or Repair.
  6. Select Repair when the installer appears.
  7. Complete the process and restart the computer.

If the application has its own setup program, launch that installer from the original installation media or the vendor’s official download. Avoid third-party repackaged installers.

How to tell whether repair worked

The repair succeeded if:

  • The application starts without the missing-file message.
  • Existing reports open normally.
  • RTF or Word export completes.
  • No new Crystal runtime error appears.
  • The application’s installation folder contains the expected Crystal export modules.

If the application still fails, do not keep copying individual DLLs. Continue with the architecture and runtime checks below.

Fix 3: Reinstall the application from its official installer

A complete reinstall is usually more reliable than replacing crxf_rtf.dll manually. Crystal Reports components are loaded as a group, and the missing file may only be the first dependency that Windows reports.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before uninstalling, make sure you have:

  • The application’s original installer or official download
  • Any license key or activation information
  • Database connection details
  • Report templates and custom export settings
  • A backup of application data

Then:

  1. Open Settings with Windows + I.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Open Installed apps.
  4. Select the affected application.
  5. Choose Uninstall.
  6. Restart Windows when prompted.
  7. Install the application again from the original vendor.
  8. Right-click the installer and choose Run as administrator if the vendor’s instructions require elevated installation.
  9. Restart Windows again.
  10. Test the application before restoring optional plugins or custom extensions.

For a legacy Crystal Reports application, its own installer is authoritative. Installing a modern Crystal runtime may not repair an application built for an older generation.

Fix 4: Install the matching Crystal Reports runtime

Applications built with Crystal Reports for Visual Studio may require an SAP Crystal Reports runtime package. The package family commonly uses names such as:

CRRuntime_32bit_13_x.msi
CRRuntime_64bit_13_x.msi

The x portion represents the runtime release or service-pack family. It must match what the application supports. Do not select 64-bit simply because Windows itself is 64-bit.

Determine the application architecture

Check the vendor’s documentation first. If it does not state the architecture, Task Manager can provide a clue:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Start the affected application.
  2. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
  3. Open Details.
  4. Right-click a column heading.
  5. Select Select columns.
  6. Enable Platform, if available.
  7. Look for an x86 or x64 indicator.

On some Windows builds, the platform column is unavailable or does not identify every application correctly. A 32-bit application can run on 64-bit Windows, so the operating system’s architecture is not enough.

A vendor’s installer may also reveal the required runtime. Do not mix a 32-bit application with only a 64-bit Crystal runtime, or the reverse.

Install an official MSI

After obtaining the exact MSI from SAP’s official Crystal Reports download route or from the application vendor:

  1. Copy the MSI to a local folder.
  2. Close the affected application.
  3. Right-click the MSI and select Install.
  4. Follow the setup wizard.
  5. Restart Windows.
  6. Test the application and its RTF or Word export function.

You can also install it from an elevated Command Prompt:

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
msiexec.exe /i "C:PathCRRuntime_32bit_13_x.msi"

For a 64-bit runtime:

msiexec.exe /i "C:PathCRRuntime_64bit_13_x.msi"

Replace the path with the real location of the MSI. If the installer reports that a different runtime is already installed, stop and verify the application vendor’s required version before removing anything.

When the runtime install does not help

A runtime installation may fail to solve the issue when:

  • The application uses a bundled legacy runtime rather than the modern runtime.
  • The wrong architecture was installed.
  • The application expects a specific service pack.
  • The application’s search path points to an obsolete Crystal directory.
  • A dependent DLL is missing.
  • A server deployment copied only the main executable and not the Crystal runtime files.

In those cases, reinstall the parent application or compare its complete installation with a working computer.

Fix 5: Repair export-only failures and related dependencies

If the application opens reports but fails only when exporting to RTF or Word, focus on the export subsystem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Crystal Reports installations may use related files such as:

  • Exportmodeller.dll
  • Crtslv.dll
  • Other Crystal runtime libraries
  • Supporting runtime or compression libraries

The exact files vary by product generation and deployment model. Do not download individual replacements from a DLL site.

Use this sequence:

  1. Close the reporting application.
  2. Open Installed apps or appwiz.cpl.
  3. Repair the parent application.
  4. If a separate Crystal runtime is listed, repair or reinstall the matching runtime.
  5. Restart Windows.
  6. Open a small report.
  7. Export it to RTF or Word.
  8. Test a second report if the first succeeds.

If only one report fails, the report itself, its data source, or its export formatting may be involved. If every report fails at export, the Crystal export module or runtime is the stronger suspect.

“The specified module could not be found” does not always mean crxf_rtf.dll itself is absent. Windows may be unable to load a dependency required by that DLL. This is why reinstalling the complete Crystal package is safer than copying one file.

Fix 6: Check antivirus quarantine

Security software can quarantine a Crystal DLL after an update, migration, or scan. It can also flag a modified or unofficial copy.

Rank #2

Check Windows Security

  1. Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Review entries around the time the error began.
  5. Expand any item associated with the affected application or crxf_rtf.dll.
  6. Check the original file path and detection details.

Do not restore a file simply because its filename looks familiar. Verify that it came from the application’s official installer and that the path belongs to the expected Crystal Reports directory.

The safer sequence is:

  1. Record the quarantine event.
  2. Contact the application vendor if the detection is unclear.
  3. Repair or reinstall the application from trusted installation media.
  4. Update security definitions.
  5. Test the application again.

Do not permanently disable antivirus protection to make the error disappear.

Fix 7: Check deployment paths on servers and Citrix

Legacy Crystal Reports applications often fail after being copied to another PC, server, terminal server, or Citrix host. Copying the executable and a few visible DLLs may not reproduce the original runtime environment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compare the failing machine with a working one:

  1. Check the application’s installation directory.
  2. Confirm the Crystal bin or runtime directory exists.
  3. Compare the presence of export modules and dependencies.
  4. Check whether both machines run the same application build.
  5. Confirm that the process architecture is the same.
  6. Check service accounts and user permissions.
  7. Review the application’s configured search path.
  8. Re-run the vendor’s installer on the failing machine if the deployment is incomplete.

For a server application, the service account may see a different working directory and environment than an interactive administrator. A file that exists on disk can still fail to load if the process cannot access its directory or if a dependency is outside the loader’s search path.

Fix 8: Do not use regsvr32 as a general DLL repair

Running this command is not a universal solution:

regsvr32 crxf_rtf.dll

regsvr32 works only with DLLs that implement the DllRegisterServer entry point. Ordinary Crystal runtime and export modules do not automatically meet that requirement.

For some very old Crystal Reports installations, related dependency files may have specific registration requirements. That does not prove that crxf_rtf.dll itself should be registered.

If the application vendor explicitly instructs you to register a particular file, use the correct regsvr32 version for the DLL architecture:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • C:WindowsSystem32regsvr32.exe is the 64-bit tool on 64-bit Windows.
  • C:WindowsSysWOW64regsvr32.exe is the 32-bit tool on 64-bit Windows.

Do not guess which tool to use. Registering the wrong file or architecture can create more confusing errors. Microsoft’s regsvr32 documentation explains the command and its requirements.

Fix 9: Run DISM and SFC only for broader Windows corruption

DISM and System File Checker repair Windows components and protected Windows files. They do not normally restore a third-party Crystal Reports DLL.

Use them when you also see Windows component errors, broken built-in applications, failed updates, or other system-file problems.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for it to finish.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Test the Crystal Reports application again.

Microsoft recommends DISM for repairing the Windows component store and SFC for checking protected system files. See Microsoft’s DISM and SFC repair guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If SFC says it found no integrity violations, that does not prove the Crystal runtime is healthy. The file belongs to an application, so return to repairing or reinstalling that application.

Repeatedly running SFC and DISM without identifying what changed rarely fixes a missing Crystal component. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for broader Windows problems and show what needs attention, while the full version performs the repair; reinstalling the Crystal application remains the definitive fix for this specific DLL.

Fix 10: Check drivers only when another dependency points there

Graphics and chipset drivers are not first-line fixes for crxf_rtf.dll. Update them only if the application logs identify a separate graphics, display, printer, or hardware dependency problem.

To check drivers manually:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand Display adapters, Print queues, System devices, or the category named in the error.
  4. Right-click the affected device.
  5. Select Update driver.
  6. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  7. Restart Windows if a driver is installed.

For a printer-related export failure, also install the printer driver supplied by the printer manufacturer and test a different default printer. Do not replace Crystal DLLs to solve a driver-specific error.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Finding the correct driver manually can mean checking hardware IDs, Windows compatibility, and several vendor packages. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers, with installation handled by the full version; use it only for an evidenced driver problem, not as a substitute for reinstalling Crystal Reports.

Why random DLL downloads are unsafe

Do not download crxf_rtf.dll from a generic DLL repository and place it in System32, SysWOW64, or the application folder.

That approach can fail because the downloaded file may have:

  • The wrong Crystal Reports generation
  • The wrong architecture
  • A different service-pack build
  • Missing dependencies
  • An altered or malicious payload
  • A path or licensing mismatch

It can also hide the real cause, such as antivirus quarantine, an incomplete application installation, or a runtime mismatch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The safe sources are:

  1. The original application vendor’s installer.
  2. The application’s official installation media.
  3. The official SAP Crystal Reports runtime package specified by the application.
  4. A controlled enterprise deployment package created from the exact supported installer.

Manual copying is appropriate only when the application vendor explicitly supports it and the file comes from the same trusted installer used for the rest of that deployment.

Frequently asked questions

Is crxf_rtf.dll a Windows file?

No. It is a Crystal Reports application DLL for Rich Text Format and Microsoft Word-compatible export. Windows does not normally provide it.

Is the file safe?

The filename is known and legitimate in Crystal Reports installations, but the name alone does not prove that a particular copy is safe. Check its location, publisher, digital signature where available, and provenance.

Is it required just to view reports?

Not necessarily. It is specifically associated with RTF and Word export. An application may still view reports while failing when you export them. Some applications may load export modules during startup, so a missing component can still prevent the entire program from opening.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which Crystal Reports versions use it?

Historical evidence associates it with Crystal Reports 8.5, 9, XI and XI R2, Crystal Reports 2008, and related BusinessObjects deployments. The exact file build, architecture, path, and dependencies vary by generation and service pack.

Should I install the latest Crystal runtime?

No, not automatically. Install the runtime version and architecture required by the application. A newer runtime is not guaranteed to support an older application’s deployment layout.

Why does Windows say “the specified module could not be found” when the file exists?

The named DLL may be present while one of its dependencies is missing, incompatible, or inaccessible. Repairing the complete Crystal Reports installation is more reliable than replacing the named file.

Should I run regsvr32?

Usually not. regsvr32 applies to DLLs that expose DllRegisterServer. Use it only when the application vendor’s instructions identify a specific self-registering component.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can SFC restore this file?

Normally no. SFC checks protected Windows system files, while crxf_rtf.dll belongs to third-party Crystal Reports software.

What if the error started after an antivirus scan?

Review Protection history, verify the path and detection, then repair or reinstall the application from trusted media. Do not restore an unknown DLL or permanently disable protection.

What information should I give the application vendor?

Provide the full error text, application name and version, Crystal Reports generation, Windows version, process architecture, runtime package installed, whether reports open, whether only export fails, the installation path, and any antivirus quarantine event. Also mention whether the problem began after an update, migration, cleanup, or reinstall.

The practical fix is usually determined by the parent application: restore its complete supported Crystal runtime, match its architecture, and keep every export dependency from the same trusted installation.
