drvcheck.dll Errors: Trace the Owner Before Repairing Windows

drvcheck.dll load failed, drvcheck.dll is missing, and drvcheck.dll was not found are common forms of the same problem. A program is requesting drvcheck.dll, but Windows cannot load the copy or one of its dependencies.

The 60-second answer

drvcheck.dll is not established as a standard Windows system file. It is an application-owned DLL that has appeared in several unrelated third-party programs, including older MSI Live Update packages, HeritageQuest Resource Viewer, and Driver Talent.

The safest fix is to identify the program named in the error, then repair, update, or reinstall that program using its original vendor installer. Do not download a random copy of drvcheck.dll and place it in System32 or SysWOW64.

The same filename can belong to different applications. A copy that works for one program may be the wrong build, wrong architecture, incomplete, or malicious for another.

  • Stay in touch with friends and family with Microsoft Teams, which can be seamlessly integrated into your taskbar. (1)

What the error messages mean

You may see wording such as:

  • drvcheck.dll load failed
  • drvcheck.dll is missing
  • drvcheck.dll was not found
  • Cannot find drvcheck.dll
  • Error loading drvcheck.dll. The specified module could not be found.
  • The program can't start because drvcheck.dll is missing from your computer.
  • A required component is missing: drvcheck.dll. Please install the application again.

The message usually appears when you:

  • Start Windows and an old startup item runs
  • Launch an old driver utility
  • Open genealogy software or older CD-based media
  • Start a hardware utility
  • Run an older application after an update or reinstall
  • Restore a backup or remove software incompletely

The phrase “specified module could not be found” is important. It can mean that drvcheck.dll itself is missing, but it can also mean that a dependency required by the DLL is missing.

What is drvcheck.dll?

The filename is associated with a description such as DrvCheck DLL or DrvCheck Dynamic Link Library. Public evidence does not establish one universal publisher or one Windows component behind that name.

Examples of applications associated with the filename include:

  • MSI Live Update 3: Older packages used DrvCheck.dll. Release information indicates that one version updated the file to address driver access on 64-bit Windows Vista.
  • HeritageQuest Resource Viewer: Archived support reports describe DrvCheck.dll load failed errors when opening the genealogy software or related media.
  • Driver Talent: File inventories show a copy inside the program’s own installation directory.

These are separate applications. The presence of one example does not prove that your copy came from the same product.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Some public file indexes describe a 32-bit copy with version 1.0.0.1 and a size of approximately 54.5 KB. Those details are third-party metadata, not proof of a current or universal build. Do not use them to select a replacement download.

First, identify the program that requested the file

Repairing Windows before identifying the parent application often wastes time. Start with the path and the exact program name.

Check the error window

Read the title bar and the text around the missing filename. The application name may appear in the title, shortcut, or another part of the message.

Write down:

  • The program that was starting
  • Whether the message appeared during boot
  • The complete error text
  • Any second filename mentioned
  • Whether the problem started after an uninstall, update, driver change, or antivirus alert

If the message appears only when opening one application, that application is the first repair target.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the shortcut

  1. Right-click the shortcut that produces the error.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open the Shortcut tab.
  4. Check Target and Start in.
  5. Note the application’s installation folder.

A legitimate application DLL is normally beside the program that uses it or inside one of that program’s subfolders. It should not automatically be copied into a Windows directory just because the error mentions a DLL.

Check installed applications

On Windows 11:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Choose Installed apps.
  4. Search for the program that produced the error.
  5. Select the three-dot menu beside it.
  6. Choose Advanced options if available.
  7. Look for Repair, Reset, or Uninstall.

On Windows 10:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Choose Apps & features.
  4. Select the suspected program.
  5. Choose Advanced options or Uninstall, depending on what Windows provides.

Not every traditional desktop program offers a Repair button. If it does not, use the program’s original installer and look for Repair, Modify, or Reinstall.

Check startup entries

If the error appears immediately after signing in:

  1. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. Select Startup apps on Windows 11, or the Startup tab on Windows 10.
  3. Look for the application named in the error.
  4. Right-click it and choose Open file location, if available.
  5. Confirm whether the folder still exists.

You can also check:

  1. Press Win+R.
  2. Enter shell:startup.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Remove a shortcut only if you have confirmed that it points to an uninstalled or unwanted program.

For a more persistent startup entry, search Windows for Task Scheduler:

  1. Open Task Scheduler.
  2. Select Task Scheduler Library.
  3. Review tasks associated with the old application.
  4. Open a task’s Actions tab to see what it launches.
  5. Disable or delete the task only when you have confirmed that it belongs to the removed program.

Do not delete an unknown task merely because its name looks unfamiliar.

Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the parent application

This is the most likely solution for drvcheck.dll.

Use the application’s repair option

  1. Close the affected program.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. Go to Apps, then Installed apps on Windows 11 or Apps & features on Windows 10.
  4. Select the affected application.
  5. Choose Advanced options and then Repair, if available.
  6. Restart Windows.
  7. Test the program again.

If the repair option is not available:

  1. Download the installer from the application’s official vendor.
  2. Choose the version intended for your Windows installation and application.
  3. Run the installer.
  4. Choose Repair, Modify, or Install.
  5. Restart Windows if requested.
  6. Launch the program from its normal shortcut.

For MSI hardware utilities, use the support and download page for the exact motherboard or device model. Avoid installing an old, generic Live Update package merely because it contains a file with the expected name.

Reinstall when repair fails

  1. Save any application data you need.
  2. Open Settings → Apps.
  3. Uninstall the affected program.
  4. Restart Windows.
  5. Download a fresh installer from the original vendor.
  6. Temporarily close other installers and hardware utilities.
  7. Install the program with its normal options.
  8. Restart Windows.
  9. Test the application before restoring custom settings.

A reinstall restores the DLL together with the files, registry settings, configuration, and dependencies that the application expects. Copying only one DLL does not do that.

If the program is very old, install its latest supported release rather than restoring an obsolete package. Some older software may not be compatible with current Windows versions even after its files are restored.

Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine

Security software may have removed or quarantined the file. A missing DLL after a security alert should be treated as a security issue, not automatically as a file-repair issue.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In Windows Security:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Windows Security.
  3. Open the app.
  4. Select Virus & threat protection.
  5. Choose Protection history.
  6. Review recent detections.
  7. Expand a detection related to the affected application.
  8. Check the original path, detection name, and source.

Microsoft documents Protection History and its restore controls here.

Restore a quarantined file only when all of the following are true:

  • The file came from a known, legitimate installer.
  • The original path belongs to the expected application.
  • The application was obtained from its official vendor.
  • The detection is understood and has been reviewed.
  • A current security scan does not indicate that the installer is compromised.

If you cannot verify the file, do not restore it. Uninstall the application, download a clean installer from its official source, and scan the installer before running it.

If reinstalling immediately causes the same detection, stop restoring the DLL and investigate the application or installer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 3: Confirm the file path and architecture

A 64-bit Windows installation can run 32-bit applications. In that situation, the application may legitimately need a 32-bit drvcheck.dll.

The important question is not whether Windows is 64-bit. It is whether the application and its DLL are compatible with each other.

Check whether a copy already exists

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Search the application’s installation folder for drvcheck.dll.
  3. Right-click the file and select Properties.
  4. Review the General, Details, and Digital Signatures tabs.
  5. Check the file location and any listed product information.
  6. Compare the path with the program that produced the error.

A file beside the requesting application is more relevant than a similarly named file found elsewhere. A missing digital signature does not by itself prove malware, especially for old software, but an unexpected path or unfamiliar publisher is a reason to avoid restoring it.

Do not assume that the file belongs in both:

  • C:WindowsSystem32
  • C:WindowsSysWOW64

Those are protected, architecture-specific Windows directories. They are not general-purpose DLL storage locations.

  • MICROSOFT WINDOWS 11 PRO (INGLES) FPP 64-BIT ENG INTL USB FLASH DRIVE

Check compatibility settings

For an old program:

  1. Right-click the application shortcut.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open the Compatibility tab.
  4. Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
  5. Test an appropriate older Windows mode only if the application vendor recommends it.
  6. Select Run this program as an administrator only when the application needs elevated access.
  7. Select Apply, then OK.
  8. Launch the program again.

Compatibility mode cannot create a missing DLL, but it can help an older application load correctly after the correct files have been restored.

Fix 4: Update or reinstall the related driver

Some applications using drvcheck.dll are driver-management or hardware utilities. If the error began after a driver update, remove and reinstall the related vendor software rather than installing a standalone DLL.

Update through Device Manager

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the category related to the hardware.
  4. Right-click the device.
  5. Select Update driver.
  6. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  7. Restart Windows if prompted.
  8. Test the original application.

For a vendor-specific driver package:

  1. Identify the exact device model in Device Manager.
  2. Open the hardware vendor’s official support page.
  3. Download the driver intended for your Windows edition and architecture.
  4. Run the installer.
  5. Restart Windows.
  6. Launch the application that reported drvcheck.dll.

Do not use Device Manager to replace the application’s own DLL. Device Manager manages device drivers, not arbitrary application files.

When manually finding the exact hardware package means hunting through many model pages and driver versions, Outbyte Driver Updater can show what its free scan identifies as outdated; driver installation is performed by the full version, and reinstalling the application remains the definitive fix when that application owns drvcheck.dll.

If the error names an old driver utility that you no longer need, uninstall the utility instead of installing a replacement DLL.

Fix 5: Check for a missing dependency

Windows may find drvcheck.dll but fail to load it because another library is absent or damaged.

Read the complete message carefully. If it names another file, repair that dependency rather than focusing only on drvcheck.dll.

Examples include:

  • VCRUNTIME140.dll
  • MSVCP140.dll
  • A named DirectX component
  • Another DLL in the same application folder

Only install the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable when the application actually requires the runtime named in the error. Microsoft maintains the supported package information here.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Some older games and applications need optional legacy DirectX side-by-side components. Microsoft provides the DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer here. This does not replace ordinary Windows DirectX and does not replace drvcheck.dll.

After installing a required runtime:

  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Start the affected application.
  3. Check whether the error changes.
  4. If a different DLL is now named, repair that dependency through its official installer.

Do not install several runtime packages at random. The full error should justify the package.

Fix 6: Remove an obsolete program and its stale startup entry

Sometimes the application is gone, but Windows still tries to start it.

If you no longer need the program:

  1. Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
  2. Find the old application.
  3. Select its menu.
  4. Choose Uninstall.
  5. Restart Windows.
  6. Check Task Manager → Startup apps.
  7. Disable an orphaned startup entry that clearly belongs to the removed program.
  8. Check shell:startup for a leftover shortcut.
  9. Check Task Scheduler for a task that launches the removed program.

If the uninstaller is missing, do not delete random program files first. Look for the original installer and use its uninstall option. If the software is obsolete, remove its remaining startup reference only after confirming the target path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is especially relevant when the error appears during boot but the associated program is no longer used.

Fix 7: Run DISM and SFC for broader Windows corruption

drvcheck.dll is not established as a protected Windows component, so System File Checker is not normally the direct fix. SFC repairs protected Windows files, not arbitrary files belonging to third-party applications.

Use these tools when you also have symptoms such as:

  • Multiple Windows components failing
  • Damaged system settings
  • Built-in Windows applications refusing to start
  • Unexpected crashes across unrelated programs
  • Windows Update or servicing errors

Run DISM, then SFC

  1. Open Start.
  2. Search for Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Wait for the command to finish.
  3. Then enter:
sfc /scannow
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
  3. Restart Windows.
  4. Test the affected application.

Microsoft’s official procedure is available here.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If SFC reports that it repaired files, test Windows and the application again. If it reports that no integrity violations were found, the application’s own installation remains the likely cause.

Repeating SFC will not restore an application-owned DLL that was never part of Windows.

When the manual process means repeatedly running DISM and SFC without knowing which component changed, Outbyte PC Repair can use its free scan to show what it identifies as problematic; repair is performed by the full version, and reinstalling the specific application remains the definitive fix for an application-owned drvcheck.dll.

Fix 8: Use System Restore after a known recent change

System Restore is appropriate when the problem began immediately after installing a driver, application, or update and a suitable restore point exists.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Win+R.
  2. Enter:
rstrui.exe
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select Next.
  3. Choose a restore point created before the error began.
  4. Select Scan for affected programs if available.
  5. Review the programs and drivers that will be changed.
  6. Select Next, then Finish.
  7. Allow Windows to restart.

System Restore rolls back system files, registry settings, drivers, and installed programs while preserving personal files. Microsoft’s instructions are here.

Use this as a recovery step for a clearly timed system change, not as the normal first response to an old application DLL error.

Windows 11 also has Settings → System → Recovery → Reinstall now, which can reinstall the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings on supported systems. Reserve that for wider Windows repair problems. It is not the normal solution for a missing DLL owned by an old utility.

Why regsvr32 usually does not fix drvcheck.dll

regsvr32 is not a general DLL installation command. It is used for DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Running this command:

regsvr32 drvcheck.dll

usually does nothing useful for a missing application DLL. It may produce an error such as:

  • The module was loaded but the entry-point DllRegisterServer was not found
  • The specified module could not be found
  • A registration failure caused by another missing dependency

That does not mean you need another download. It often means the DLL is not designed to be registered.

Use regsvr32 only when the application vendor specifically instructs you to register that particular DLL and supplies the correct file and command. Microsoft documents the command syntax here.

What not to do

Avoid these common mistakes:

  • Downloading drvcheck.dll from a random DLL website
  • Copying it into System32 or SysWOW64
  • Replacing a 32-bit application DLL with an assumed 64-bit copy
  • Using a file size or version label as proof of authenticity
  • Registering the DLL without evidence that it supports registration
  • Running registry cleaners to repair a missing file
  • Restoring a file that antivirus identified without checking its origin
  • Running SFC and expecting it to restore a third-party application file
  • Keeping a stale startup task solely because it is difficult to identify

A random DLL can contain malware, target the wrong architecture, have incompatible dependencies, or simply silence one message while leaving the application broken.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The safe source is the original application installer from the identified vendor. If the software came with physical media or an old CD, use a clean, trusted copy of that software or replace the obsolete application.

FAQ

Is drvcheck.dll a Windows system file?

No public evidence establishes it as a standard Windows component. It appears to be application-owned and has been associated with multiple unrelated third-party products.

Which program installed drvcheck.dll?

There is no single confirmed answer. Older MSI Live Update packages, HeritageQuest Resource Viewer, and Driver Talent have all been associated with the filename. Check the error, shortcut, installation path, and startup entry to identify your copy.

Can I download drvcheck.dll by itself?

You should not. A standalone download may be malicious, incompatible, or intended for a different application. Reinstall the program that requested the file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does a 64-bit version of Windows need a 64-bit drvcheck.dll?

Not necessarily. A 64-bit version of Windows can run a 32-bit application that needs a 32-bit DLL. The application and its own DLL must match.

Will SFC restore drvcheck.dll?

Normally, no. SFC repairs protected Windows files. It does not normally restore a DLL supplied by an application.

Should I run regsvr32?

Usually not. Missing application DLLs are normally restored by repairing or reinstalling the parent program. Use regsvr32 only when the vendor specifically requires it.

Is drvcheck.dll malware?

The filename alone cannot answer that. Review the file’s path, digital signature, source installer, and Windows Security detection. Do not restore a quarantined copy unless its origin is verified.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if the original program is no longer supported?

If you do not need it, uninstall it and remove its stale startup entry or scheduled task. If you need its data, preserve that data and look for a supported replacement or updated version rather than placing an unknown DLL into Windows.

What if the error remains after reinstalling?

Check the exact path, Protection History, Event Viewer, and the complete error for a second missing dependency. Also test the application in a new local Windows profile if only one user account is affected. If the problem continues across profiles and other Windows components are failing, then DISM, SFC, or System Restore becomes more relevant.
