How progression and unlockables work
Abilities turn blocked paths into future routes
When Pluto reaches a door, gap, obstacle, or puzzle that cannot yet be completed, mark it mentally or on a personal map instead of assuming the area is optional. The official descriptions specifically connect new abilities and upgrades with expanding the map. A blocked route is therefore a backtracking prompt: continue through currently reachable rooms, obtain the next useful upgrade, then return to the obstruction.
This approach prevents two common mistakes. First, repeatedly attacking an obstacle with the wrong tool wastes time. Second, abandoning an area permanently can leave collectibles behind once a later ability makes the route possible. Keep a short list such as “sealed door near the hub,” “high ledge in the west section,” or “puzzle with an inactive mechanism.” Revisit each note after a meaningful ability or attack upgrade.
Exploration and puzzles are the unlock system
Crypt Custodian does not present its secrets as a separate cheat menu. Hidden rooms, upgrades, abilities, and collectibles are rewards for inspecting the connected world and understanding its puzzles. Search side passages, unusual corners, and rooms that look too small to matter. If a puzzle appears to require an interaction you do not yet understand, leave a marker and return after exploring elsewhere rather than forcing a solution with random attacks.
Broom combat supports exploration
Pluto’s broom is both the signature weapon and the tool that makes ordinary encounters manageable while you search. Learn enemy spacing, avoid taking unnecessary damage, and use upgrades as they become available. A clean fight preserves health for rooms where the real challenge is navigation or puzzle timing. The game’s official descriptions confirm broom combat and upgrade collection, but they do not publish a complete list of attack names or unlock conditions.

For a named list of upgrades and special attacks, use the player guide All Upgrades and Special Attacks in Crypt Custodian. It is third-party guidance, so compare its instructions with the version you are playing and be alert to revisions after patches.
Hidden collectibles and completion targets
Cat Spirits
Steam’s community guide index includes a guide specifically for all 20 Cat Spirits. That number is a useful completion target, but the index is a player resource rather than official documentation. If you are collecting them without a walkthrough, sweep each newly opened region twice: once while following the main route and again after acquiring an ability that changes traversal. Keep a checklist of collected spirits so a later map sweep focuses on gaps instead of repeating every room.
Keys and the Cat Door
Community listings also include a key-location guide and a guide to opening the Cat Door. Search results reference “Theatre and ‘The Back’ Keys” as a guide topic, indicating that players commonly need help connecting named keys with their locks. Do not infer a universal location or unlock condition from a search title alone; use the full guide and verify the room or landmark in your own save. If a key appears missing, check every accessible branch in the relevant region before concluding that the game has failed to spawn it.

100-percent runs
A 100% video walkthrough with all achievements is listed among Steam’s community resources. Video can be useful when a map is confusing, but it can also hide the reason an area became accessible. Pause at each transition and record which ability, key, or puzzle solution opened the route. That record lets you recover if your run diverges from the video and reduces the risk of following an order that assumes a different version or save state.

A practical route for finding secrets
- Finish the reachable loop first. Explore every branch that does not require an unknown ability. Open obvious rooms, solve puzzles you can currently understand, and collect visible rewards.
- Record every blocker. Note the landmark and what appears to stop you: a height difference, sealed door, inactive mechanism, or missing key. A precise note is more useful than “come back later.”
- Prioritize upgrades that change movement or access. The official game descriptions establish that abilities and upgrades expand the world. After receiving one, revisit your blocker list before pushing deep into a new region.
- Re-sweep in a consistent pattern. Travel room by room, checking side paths and unusual corners. Mark completed rooms so a collectible guide can be used as a verification tool rather than a substitute for navigation.
- Use a community map only when needed. Steam’s guide index contains maps, collectible references, and completion walkthroughs. Choose one guide, identify it as community-made, and check its publication or update date if your result differs.
- Verify the result in-game. A guide’s checklist is not proof that your save has registered an item. Confirm the collectible count, opened door, or completed achievement in the game before moving on.
Using guides without spoiling or corrupting a run
Start with the least revealing resource that answers your problem. A map is preferable to a full video if you only need to locate one unexplored branch; a key guide is preferable to a 100% route if one lock is stopping progress. Read headings first and avoid expanding sections for regions you have not reached.
Steam’s Crypt Custodian Guides page is an index, not an official support manual. “The route in the guide is blocked.”
Check whether the guide assumes an ability or key you have not earned. Return to your blocker list, explore another accessible branch, and revisit the route after the next upgrade. Do not treat a locked path as evidence that your save is broken.
“The collectible is not where the video shows it.”
Confirm platform, region, and guide version. Videos may use a different route order or skip the prerequisite that makes a room reachable. Use the room’s landmarks and map position rather than the video’s timestamp alone.
“A code does nothing.”
There is no official code procedure to troubleshoot. Verify that the claim names the same platform and version, and avoid installing untrusted tools. If the only evidence is a copied text entry with no demonstration, discard it and use the game’s ability-and-exploration progression instead.

“I missed something in a completed area.”
Revisit after every traversal-changing upgrade, then sweep methodically with a checklist. A missed Cat Spirit, key, or Cat Door prerequisite is more likely to be an overlooked branch than a hidden command.
What counts as a legitimate “cheat” here?
