Error messages you may see
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Windows or an affected program may display one of these messages:
- “The program can’t start because your Cryptsp.dll program is missing from your computer.”
- “The program can’t start because cryptsp.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because cryptsp.dll was not found.”
- “There was a problem starting cryptsp.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “Error loading cryptsp.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “cryptsp.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
- “cryptsp.dll Not Found.”
- “Cannot find cryptsp.dll.”
The wording varies between Windows and the application that is loading the file. “The specified module could not be found” can mean that cryptsp.dll is missing, but it can also mean that another dependency required by the DLL or application is unavailable.

The 60-second answer
cryptsp.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows system file. Its description is Cryptographic Service Provider API, and it supports the legacy Windows CryptoAPI used for encryption, hashing, signing, key storage, and related security operations. Microsoft documents Cryptographic Service Providers as Windows DLL-based components and recommends newer Cryptography API: Next Generation APIs for new development.
Do not download cryptsp.dll from a random DLL website, copy an unknown version into System32, or run regsvr32 as a general repair. The safest first repair is:

- Install pending Windows updates.
- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Run DISM.
- Run System File Checker.
- Restart Windows and test the affected program.
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow
Run DISM first, allow it to finish, then run SFC. This repairs Windows components rather than masking the problem with an unverified replacement file.
If only one game or application fails while Windows and other programs work normally, repair or reinstall that application instead. The correct decision is usually:
- Missing or broken across Windows: repair Windows with updates, DISM, and SFC.
- Broken in one program only: repair, verify, or reinstall that program.
- Removed by security software: inspect Protection History before restoring anything.
- Still broken after repair: investigate dependencies, malware, disk corruption, System Restore, or a Windows repair reinstall.
What cryptsp.dll is and where it belongs
cryptsp.dll is part of the Microsoft Windows operating system, not a normal Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET runtime package. Microsoft servicing manifests continue to list the file among Windows components. Its exact version and size depend on the Windows build and image variant, so there is no single correct universal version or file size.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →On 64-bit Windows, the normal locations are:
%WINDIR%System32for native 64-bit system files%WINDIR%SysWOW64for 32-bit system files used by 32-bit applications
These names are counterintuitive. System32 normally contains 64-bit system files on 64-bit Windows, while SysWOW64 contains the 32-bit compatibility files. This behavior is part of Microsoft’s WOW64 file-system redirection.
Do not move files between these folders to resolve an error. Do not copy a 64-bit DLL into a 32-bit application directory, and do not copy a 32-bit DLL into a 64-bit program directory. An architecture mismatch can produce a different error or make the original problem harder to diagnose.
To check whether the expected files exist, open File Explorer and enter each path in the address bar:
%WINDIR%System32cryptsp.dll
%WINDIR%SysWOW64cryptsp.dll
The second path is expected only on 64-bit Windows. The presence of a file does not prove that it is correct or undamaged, so use Windows repair tools rather than trusting a file based only on its name.
Why the error appears
The most useful distinction is whether the problem affects Windows generally or only one application.
| Situation | Most likely direction |
|---|---|
| Several Windows programs fail | Missing or corrupted Windows component |
| The error appeared after an update or crash | Incomplete servicing or component corruption |
| Antivirus reports or quarantines the file | Removal, false positive, or unauthorized replacement |
| One game or application fails | Damaged application files or a missing dependency |
| “Not designed to run on Windows” appears | Corruption, wrong architecture, or incompatible build |
| The file exists but loading still fails | Missing dependency or DLL search-path problem |
| The issue began after a system change | System Restore may help |
| Repairs fail repeatedly | Component-store, disk, malware, or installation-media problem |
A cleanup utility, failed update, abrupt shutdown, disk error, or malware infection can damage or remove a Windows file. These possibilities should be checked in a controlled order rather than by replacing the DLL with an arbitrary download.
Fix 1: Install pending Windows updates
Windows servicing is the correct delivery mechanism for a missing or corrupted Windows system DLL.
Windows 11
- Select Start.
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Test the program again.
Windows 10
- Select Start.
- Open Settings.
- Select Update & Security.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates and restart.
Windows 10 reached the end of support on October 14, 2025. Existing Windows 10 systems can still be repaired using the available Windows tools, but moving to a supported Windows version should be part of your longer-term recovery plan where the hardware and software allow it.
If Windows Update fails, note the displayed error and continue with DISM and SFC below. Do not repeatedly retry updates without repairing the component store when Windows itself reports servicing problems.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
This is the primary repair for a genuinely missing or damaged Windows copy of cryptsp.dll.
Run DISM
- Select Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Press Enter.
- Leave the window open until the operation finishes.
DISM repairs the Windows component store, which is the source Windows uses for protected-file repair. The progress percentage can pause for a while. Do not close the window merely because the percentage has not changed recently.
A successful result normally reports that the restore operation completed successfully. Restart Windows before testing the affected program.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Run System File Checker
After DISM completes, open an elevated Command Prompt again if necessary and enter:
sfc /scannow
Press Enter and wait until verification reaches 100 percent. SFC scans protected Windows files and replaces damaged copies using the repaired component store.
The result may say that:
- No integrity violations were found.
- Corrupt files were found and successfully repaired.
- Corrupt files were found but some could not be repaired.
Restart Windows after SFC completes, then open the program that produced the error.
If SFC repaired files and the error disappears, no manual DLL download is needed. If SFC could not repair everything, run DISM again, restart, and run SFC once more. Repeatedly running the same commands without checking the error result is unlikely to solve a damaged component store.

If DISM says source files cannot be found
Microsoft supports using a matching Windows repair source:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with a real repair source that matches the installed Windows edition, language, architecture, and build. Do not use a random Windows folder copied from another computer or downloaded from an untrusted source. A mismatched source can leave the component store in a worse state.
If you do not have a known-good matching source, use official Windows installation media or move to the repair-reinstall steps later in this guide.

Fix 3: Repair one affected game or application
If Windows works normally and only one game or application reports cryptsp.dll, the application installation may be the real problem. The application may also be loading a dependency that Windows reports as a missing module.
Try these steps in order:
- Close the affected program.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps in Windows 11, or Settings > Apps > Apps & features in Windows 10.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Test the application.
- If Repair is unavailable or ineffective, select Reset only if you understand that it may remove application data and settings.
- Reinstall the application from its official vendor or launcher.
For a Steam game:
- Open Steam.
- Open Library.
- Right-click the game.
- Select Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for verification to finish.
- Start the game again.
For another launcher, use its equivalent file-verification or repair option. If the program stores user saves or configuration files locally, back them up before uninstalling.
Do not place a downloaded cryptsp.dll beside the program executable. Windows DLL search behavior can allow an application-folder copy to load before the correct system component. A wrong or altered file can create a security risk and may make diagnosis misleading.
If reinstalling the application fixes the error, the Windows copy was probably not the original problem. If several programs still fail, return to the DISM and SFC procedure.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine safely
Security software can quarantine a file after a detection, a false positive, or an unauthorized replacement. Do not restore a quarantined DLL automatically.
Check Windows Security Protection History
- Select Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open the app.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review entries mentioning
cryptsp.dll, the affected application, or a suspicious file location. - Note the detection name and original path.
Restore the file only when the file is confirmed to be a legitimate Microsoft copy and the detection is a false positive. If the file was located in an unusual application folder, a temporary directory, or a user-writable location, do not assume it is genuine merely because it has the correct filename.
After a suspicious detection:
- Update Microsoft Defender security intelligence.
- Run a Full scan.
- If the concern remains, use Microsoft Defender Offline scan.
- Restart when prompted.
- Run DISM and SFC after the scan.
If malware may have replaced the file, repair Windows rather than restoring the suspicious copy. A clean scan does not by itself prove that every system file is correct.

Fix 5: Verify the file signature and location
If cryptsp.dll exists but you are unsure whether it is legitimate, check its location and Authenticode signature.
A normal Windows copy should be in the appropriate Windows system directory, not randomly beside a game executable or in a temporary folder.
Open PowerShell and run:
Get-AuthenticodeSignature "$env:windirSystem32cryptsp.dll"
Review the Status and signer information. A valid signature supports authenticity, but it does not prove that the file is the correct build for your installation. A missing or invalid signature is a reason to repair Windows and scan for malware, not a reason to download a replacement.
On 64-bit Windows, you can also inspect the 32-bit system copy:
Get-AuthenticodeSignature "$env:windirSysWOW64cryptsp.dll"
Do not delete either file manually. Protected Windows files should be repaired through servicing tools or trusted installation media.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFix 6: Investigate dependencies and architecture
A “specified module could not be found” message does not always identify the missing component accurately. The application may find cryptsp.dll but fail while loading one of its dependencies.
Check the following:
- Is the application 32-bit or 64-bit?
- Is Windows 32-bit or 64-bit?
- Does the error occur before the application window opens?
- Does the file exist in the expected Windows directory?
- Does the application include its own outdated DLL beside the executable?
- Did the error begin after replacing or modifying application files?
Do not copy files between System32 and SysWOW64. Do not add Windows system directories to an application-specific workaround unless a qualified technician has identified a particular loader problem.
Visual C++ Redistributable packages, DirectX redistributables, .NET Desktop Runtime, and .NET Framework do not supply cryptsp.dll. Install those packages only when the application reports a different missing runtime or its official documentation identifies one. They are not a direct repair for this Windows system DLL.
Fix 7: Do not use regsvr32 for this file
Do not run:
regsvr32 cryptsp.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, commonly used by COM or ActiveX components. It is not a general-purpose missing-DLL repair command, and registering a Windows system library does not restore a missing file or repair its dependencies.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteUse Windows servicing tools for cryptsp.dll. If an application vendor specifically instructs you to register a different component, follow that vendor’s documented procedure for that component only.
Fix 8: Update a related driver only when logs identify it
cryptsp.dll is a Windows user-mode system DLL, not a device driver. Driver reinstallation is not a normal first-line fix.
Consider a driver or vendor security component only when the error is connected to a smart-card reader, certificate device, security product, or other hardware and logs identify that component as the failing dependency.
If you need to inspect drivers:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Smart card readers, Security devices, or Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Right-click the identified device.
- Select Properties.
- Review the General and Driver tabs.
- Use Update driver only when you have a trusted driver source.
- Restart Windows and test again.
Do not use Device Manager to replace random system DLLs. Device Manager handles hardware drivers, not Windows cryptography libraries.
Outbyte Driver Updater can remove the guesswork of identifying stale hardware drivers when logs point to a particular device. Its free scan shows the detected driver issues, while installation is performed by the full version, and updating a driver is not a substitute for DISM and SFC when Windows itself is damaged.
Fix 9: Use System Restore after a recent change
System Restore is appropriate when the error began after a recent driver installation, software installation, update, cleanup operation, or system modification.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore does not normally remove personal documents, but it can remove applications, drivers, and updates installed after the restore point. If no suitable restore point exists, continue with a repair reinstall rather than creating a new restore point after the failure.
Fix 10: Repair-reinstall Windows
Use a repair reinstall when DISM and SFC do not restore the component, the issue affects multiple programs, and Windows Update or a previous system change appears responsible.
On Windows 11, where the option is available:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts.
- Keep the option to preserve apps, files, and settings when offered.
This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving your existing environment. The option may not appear on every installation, so follow the requirements shown by Windows.
If the option is unavailable, use official Windows installation media and choose the in-place repair option that keeps personal files and apps where supported. Back up important files first. Confirm the edition, language, and architecture before starting.
A clean installation should be the final resort when malware, severe corruption, disk failure, or repeated repair failures make an in-place repair unreliable. Back up personal files and verify that you have the required application installers, licenses, and recovery information before proceeding.
Should you download cryptsp.dll manually
No. There is no supported standalone Microsoft cryptsp.dll redistributable named “Cryptsp Runtime.” The file is delivered as part of Windows servicing.
Random DLL download sites can provide:
- A file from the wrong Windows build
- A 32-bit file for a 64-bit application, or the reverse
- A modified or malicious file
- A file that lacks required dependencies
- A replacement that hides the real Windows corruption
The safe sources are Windows Update, DISM and SFC, official Windows installation media, and the affected application’s official repair or reinstall process. Manual replacement is an advanced recovery procedure only when the source is verified, matches the installed Windows build and architecture, and the file has been checked.
Frequently asked questions
Is cryptsp.dll a Microsoft file?
Yes. It is a Microsoft Windows operating-system component with the description “Cryptographic Service Provider API.” Microsoft documents the related Cryptographic Service Provider architecture as part of Windows CryptoAPI.
Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Not to repair cryptsp.dll itself. Those packages may resolve separate missing-runtime messages from the same application, but they do not supply this Windows cryptography system file.
Does cryptsp.dll need to be registered?
No. Do not use regsvr32 cryptsp.dll. Registration is for DLLs that expose the appropriate registration entry points, not for repairing an ordinary missing or damaged Windows system component.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

What if Windows Security quarantined it?
Review Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection history. Restore only a verified legitimate Microsoft copy after confirming a false positive. Otherwise scan the system and repair Windows with DISM and SFC.
Can I copy cryptsp.dll from another computer?
Only as a controlled recovery procedure when the source exactly matches the installed Windows edition, language, architecture, and build and the file is verified. In normal troubleshooting, component repair or official installation media is safer.
When should I reinstall Windows?
Use System Restore or a repair reinstall first when practical. A clean installation is justified when malware, severe component corruption, disk problems, or repeated repair failures prevent a trustworthy in-place repair. Back up personal data before making that decision.
