cryptui.dll Not Found: Safe Repair Steps for Windows 11 and 10

cryptui.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows system file, not a game-specific DLL or Visual C++ runtime. If Windows reports that cryptui.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair Windows first instead of downloading a replacement from a DLL website.

The file is commonly described as Microsoft Trust UI Provider. Microsoft uses it for certificate selection, certificate viewing and management, importing and exporting certificates, signing, and other trust-related interface functions. A damaged copy can therefore affect applications that appear unrelated to certificates.

The safest repair order is:

  1. Install Windows updates and restart.
  2. Run DISM, then SFC from an administrator Command Prompt.
  3. Check the file path, architecture, signature, and antivirus history.
  4. Repair the affected application if only one program fails.
  5. Use System Restore or a Windows repair reinstall if Windows itself remains damaged.

First, identify the type of failure

Before changing files, record the exact message and the path shown in it. These details determine whether the problem belongs to Windows or to one application.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Common messages include:

The application has failed to start because CRYPTUI.DLL was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.
The program can't start because CRYPTUI.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.

A damaged file can also produce:

program.exe - Bad Image

C:WindowsSystem32CRYPTUI.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.

Use this quick distinction:

  • Several applications fail: suspect Windows component corruption, an incomplete update, quarantine, or malware cleanup.
  • Windows Explorer, LogonUI.exe, startup, or the desktop is affected: treat it as a Windows repair problem.
  • Only one application or game fails: check that application’s installation and any application-local DLL.
  • The message names an application folder: the application may contain a bad private copy.
  • The message names System32 or SysWOW64: repair the Windows component rather than reinstalling every affected application.

A “could not load” error does not always mean that cryptui.dll itself is absent. It can indicate a damaged dependency, a wrong-architecture file, an invalid signature, restricted access, or another DLL named elsewhere in the complete error.

Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart

Time needed: 10–30 minutes, depending on pending updates

Windows servicing updates continue to include system components such as cryptui.dll. An interrupted or incomplete update can leave a component unavailable even when the rest of Windows appears normal.

Windows 11

  1. Open Start and select Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Select Check for updates.
  4. Install all available updates.
  5. Restart when Windows requests it.
  6. Test the program again.

Windows 10

  1. Open Start and select Settings.
  2. Select Update & Security.
  3. Select Windows Update.
  4. Select Check for updates.
  5. Install the available updates.
  6. Restart the computer and test the affected program.

If Windows Update repeatedly fails, continue with DISM and SFC rather than repeatedly reinstalling the application.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC

Time needed: 15–45 minutes

This is the main repair for a missing, corrupted, or incorrectly serviced Windows copy of cryptui.dll.

Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. DISM repairs the Windows component source that SFC uses to restore protected system files.

Run DISM

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Select Yes if User Account Control appears.
  6. Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Wait for the operation to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
  3. Restart Windows after DISM completes.

Run SFC

After restarting:

  1. Open Command Prompt as administrator again.
  2. Enter:
sfc /scannow
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
  3. Restart Windows.
  4. Test the program that reported cryptui.dll.

SFC may report that it found no integrity violations, repaired corrupted files, or could not repair some files. If it repairs files, restart before testing. If it reports that it could not repair everything, run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC once.

If the error identifies a particular Windows copy, you can check only that file with:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
sfc /scanfile=C:WindowsSystem32cryptui.dll

Use the actual path shown in your error. Do not use this command for a file located in an application folder.

When DISM cannot obtain repair files, it may need a matching Windows installation source. The source must match the installed Windows version, edition, language, and architecture. Use Microsoft’s documented DISM repair-source procedure rather than selecting a random ISO or downloaded DLL.

If you prefer an automated diagnostic while you are working through repeated component checks, Outbyte PC Repair can show what it detects before any repair is applied. Its free scan identifies issues, while repair is performed by the full version, and it is not required when DISM and SFC already resolve the problem.

Fix 3: Check the correct Windows path and architecture

Time needed: 5–15 minutes

The correct location depends on whether Windows and the application are 32-bit, 64-bit, or ARM64.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On 64-bit Windows:

  • Native 64-bit files normally use %WINDIR%System32.
  • 32-bit files normally use %WINDIR%SysWOW64.

On 32-bit Windows:

  • The 32-bit copy normally uses %WINDIR%System32.

The names can be confusing. On 64-bit Windows, System32 is normally the native 64-bit system directory, while SysWOW64 supports 32-bit applications through Windows compatibility redirection.

To check the path:

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Enter:
%WINDIR%System32
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Search for cryptui.dll.
  3. Repeat with:
%WINDIR%SysWOW64

Do not copy a file between these folders simply because it exists in one location. A 32-bit program uses the 32-bit Windows copy through WOW64 redirection. An x86 file placed where a native x64 file is expected, or the reverse, can cause a Bad Image error.

To check the Windows architecture:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System.
  3. Select About.
  4. Read System type.

On Windows 11, this may show an x64-based system or an ARM64-based system. On Windows 10, it may show a 32-bit or 64-bit operating system. Use Windows Update and Windows repair sources that match the installed architecture.

Check for an application-local copy

An application may load a DLL from its own folder before searching the Windows system locations. If the error names a program directory, inspect that directory instead of replacing the Windows copy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Note the complete path in the error.
  2. Open the application’s installation folder.
  3. Look for cryptui.dll.
  4. Do not delete it immediately.
  5. Use the application installer’s repair or reinstall function.
  6. If necessary, contact the application vendor with the exact path and error.

A private application copy should be repaired through that application. A copy in System32 or SysWOW64 should normally be restored through Windows servicing.

Fix 4: Verify the file’s Microsoft signature

Time needed: 5 minutes

A file can have the right name and still be unsafe or incompatible. Check the publisher before considering any manual recovery.

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Browse to the path named in the error.
  3. Right-click cryptui.dll.
  4. Select Properties.
  5. Open the Digital Signatures tab.
  6. Select the signature and choose Details.
  7. Confirm that Windows reports a valid signature from Microsoft.

If there is no Digital Signatures tab, the signature is invalid, or the publisher is not Microsoft, do not use that file. Run a full security scan and repair Windows through DISM, SFC, Windows Update, or Windows recovery.

File versions vary by Windows release, update level, architecture, and language. Do not select a replacement because its visible version number or file size looks newer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 5: Check Windows Security quarantine

Time needed: 10–30 minutes

Security software may quarantine a genuine system file after a false positive, or it may remove a modified file during malware cleanup.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Windows Security.
  3. Open the app.
  4. Select Virus & threat protection.
  5. Select Protection history.
  6. Review recent actions involving cryptui.dll.
  7. Check the file path, detection name, and publisher.

Restore a quarantined file only after confirming that it is the genuine Microsoft file and that the detection is a false positive. Microsoft warns that restoring a real threat can expose the computer again.

If malware is suspected:

  1. Open Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Scan options.
  4. Run a Full scan.
  5. If the infection may be active before Windows starts, use Microsoft Defender Offline scan.

After malware removal, run DISM and SFC again. If the system remains untrusted or repeated repairs fail, back up important data and use Windows recovery or a clean installation.

Fix 6: Repair the affected application or game

Time needed: 10–60 minutes

If only one program fails and the error points to that program’s folder, repair or reinstall it from its official source. Reinstalling an application cannot normally restore a damaged Windows copy in System32.

For a game launcher with a verification feature:

  1. Open the launcher.
  2. Open the game library.
  3. Open the game’s menu.
  4. Select its Manage or Verify option.
  5. Allow the launcher to compare and replace damaged files.
  6. Start the game again.

For Epic Games, the usual path is Library, the three-dot menu beside the game, Manage, then Verify. Verification can replace damaged game files without normally affecting saved data.

If verification succeeds but the error names %WINDIR%System32cryptui.dll, return to DISM and SFC. The launcher can repair its own files but normally cannot repair Windows system components.

Fix 7: Check dependencies before installing runtimes

Time needed: 10–30 minutes

Read the full error carefully. Another DLL may be the actual missing dependency.

  • Visual C++ Redistributable packages repair Visual C++ runtime DLLs. The official packages include vc_redist.x86.exe, vc_redist.x64.exe, and vc_redist.arm64.exe. They do not restore cryptui.dll.
  • DirectX legacy runtime packages install older D3DX, XAudio, XInput, and related libraries. They are not a cryptui.dll repair.
  • .NET should be installed or repaired only when the error identifies a .NET runtime or framework.
  • Windows Features should be changed only when the application identifies a missing Windows feature.

To inspect Windows Features:

  1. Open Control Panel.
  2. Select Programs.
  3. Select Turn Windows features on or off.
  4. Review the feature named by the application’s documentation.
  5. Do not disable unrelated features to troubleshoot cryptui.dll.
  6. Restart only if Windows requests it.

Installing several runtime packages at random can obscure the original problem and introduce unnecessary changes.

Fix 8: Check drivers only when the evidence points there

Time needed: 15–30 minutes

A driver reinstall is not a normal cryptui.dll fix. Consider it only if the error began immediately after a specific driver package, or the application vendor identifies a driver installation problem.

To inspect drivers:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the device category associated with the failure.
  4. Right-click the device.
  5. Select Properties.
  6. Open the Driver tab.
  7. Review the provider, date, and version.
  8. Use Update Driver, Roll Back Driver, or the hardware manufacturer’s official installer as appropriate.
  9. Restart and test the application.

If you are checking many devices manually, Outbyte Driver Updater can show which drivers it identifies as outdated before changes are made. Its free scan reports the detected drivers, while driver installation is performed by the full version, and a driver tool is not required for a genuine Windows component repair.

Fix 9: Use System Restore after a recent system change

Time needed: 20–45 minutes

System Restore is appropriate when the problem began immediately after a Windows update, driver installation, security product change, or application installer and a suitable restore point exists.

System Restore rolls back system files, settings, registry state, and installed programs. It does not normally remove personal files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Enter:
rstrui.exe
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select Next.
  3. Choose a restore point created before the error began.
  4. Select Scan for affected programs if available.
  5. Review the changes.
  6. Select Next, then Finish.
  7. Let Windows restart.
  8. Test the affected program.

If the problem began after malware activity, do not rely on an old restore point as the only recovery step. Scan the computer and consider Windows repair or reinstallation.

Fix 10: Reinstall the current version of Windows

Time needed: 30–90 minutes

If Windows 11 still reports a damaged cryptui.dll after updates, DISM, SFC, security checks, and System Restore, use Windows’ repair reinstall when it is offered.

On supported Windows 11 installations:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System.
  3. Select Recovery.
  4. Look for Fix problems using Windows Update.
  5. Select Reinstall now.
  6. Follow the prompts.

This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving applications, personal files, and settings. Keep the computer connected to power and do not interrupt the process.

If the option is unavailable or Windows cannot boot, enter Windows Recovery Environment and try Startup Repair or System Restore first. If malware is confirmed or every repair path fails, back up important data and perform a Windows repair installation or clean installation.

Why the error happens

cryptui.dll belongs to Windows, so the practical causes are different from those for a DLL shipped only with one game.

Windows component corruption

This is the leading practical starting point when several programs fail, Windows startup is affected, or the error names System32. An incomplete update, damaged component store, disk problem, or interrupted repair can make the file unavailable or invalid.

DISM followed by SFC is the appropriate first repair because it addresses both the component source and the protected system file.

Antivirus quarantine or malware cleanup

Security software may remove a modified or suspicious file. A genuine Microsoft file may also be quarantined incorrectly. Protection History and a full scan help distinguish those situations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Wrong architecture or incompatible copy

A 32-bit application and a 64-bit application do not necessarily use the same physical copy. A mismatched file can exist and still fail with Bad Image or “not designed to run on Windows.”

An application-local replacement

Some applications search their own installation folder before Windows system directories. A damaged private copy can affect only that application while the Windows copy remains healthy.

Damaged application files

If one game or program fails and the error points to its own directory, the installer or launcher may have damaged files. Use its repair or verification function before changing Windows files.

Do not download cryptui.dll from a DLL website

Random DLL download sites can provide malware, an altered file, the wrong architecture, or a version from a different Windows release. Even a genuine-looking replacement may not repair the component store, its dependencies, its signature, or the update that originally damaged it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no official standalone cryptui.dll redistributable intended for routine download. Restore it through Windows Update, DISM, SFC, a matching Windows repair source, System Restore, Windows Recovery, or a Windows repair installation.

Do not use regsvr32 cryptui.dll as a generic fix. regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose COM registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer; cryptui.dll is not documented as a self-registering COM component.

Manual replacement is an advanced exception only when Microsoft’s recovery guidance calls for it. The replacement must come from a known-good Windows installation with the same build and architecture. Never use a file copied from an unknown computer or downloaded from the Internet.

Frequently asked questions

Is cryptui.dll safe?

The genuine Windows file is a Microsoft system component commonly described as Microsoft Trust UI Provider. Verify its location and Microsoft digital signature rather than trusting the filename alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Where should cryptui.dll be?

On 64-bit Windows, the native copy normally resides in %WINDIR%System32, while the 32-bit copy normally resides in %WINDIR%SysWOW64. On 32-bit Windows, the 32-bit copy normally resides in %WINDIR%System32.

Should I reinstall the program that reports the error?

Only if one program fails and the error identifies its own installation folder. Reinstalling that program usually cannot restore a missing or corrupted Windows copy in System32.

Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?

Only when the complete error identifies a DLL or runtime belonging to that package. Those packages repair different components and are not general repairs for cryptui.dll.

What if SFC says Windows is healthy?

Check the exact path in the error and look for another missing dependency. Also check for an application-local copy, wrong architecture, invalid signature, access restrictions, or a security product action.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if the computer cannot boot?

Enter Windows Recovery Environment and try Startup Repair or System Restore. If those fail, use a matching Windows repair source or repair installation. Avoid replacing files manually unless you can verify the exact Windows build and architecture.

Can I copy cryptui.dll from another computer?

Do not do this routinely. Manual replacement requires a known-good file from the same Windows version, servicing level, architecture, and language context, and it does not repair a damaged component store. DISM and SFC are safer first choices.
