crystalinfostorelib.dll is a third-party Crystal Reports-era assembly, not a Windows system file. When Windows reports that it is missing or cannot be loaded, repair the application that needs it instead of downloading a replacement DLL.
What this file actually does
The file belongs to an assembly imported from the CrystalInfoStoreLib type library. It is associated with older Crystal Reports and Crystal Enterprise software, including applications that used Crystal reporting APIs.

That means the file may have been installed by:
- An older Crystal Reports or Crystal Enterprise package
- A business, accounting, auditing, or document-management program
- A reporting application that embedded Crystal Reports
- A custom .NET application built around an older Crystal runtime
The filename alone cannot identify the exact parent application. It also does not prove that a current SAP Crystal Reports runtime will restore the correct file.

Historical records describe the assembly in more than one way. One record identifies a 32-bit DLL with a file size of 56 KB and version 1.0.0.0, while another historical Global Assembly Cache listing shows CrystalInfoStoreLib version 9.1.5000.0. Treat those as historical metadata, not as a universal specification for every installation.
Causes and symptoms
| What you see | Most likely cause | Best first action |
|---|---|---|
| The error appears when opening one old business application | The application or its Crystal runtime was removed or damaged | Repair or reinstall that application |
| The program worked before a security scan | Antivirus quarantined the assembly | Check Protection history, then reinstall from the official installer |
| “The specified module could not be found” appears even though the file exists | A dependency of the DLL is missing | Reinstall the complete application and confirm its architecture |
| The program runs on another computer but not this one | Missing legacy runtime, prerequisite, or application component | Compare the application installation and use its original installer |
| A 32-bit application fails on 64-bit Windows | The required x86 runtime is missing | Repair the application with its 32-bit components |
| Several Windows components also fail | Possible Windows component corruption | Run DISM, then SFC |
| The file is in a temporary or unrelated folder | The file may not belong to the Crystal application | Check its location, signature, and origin before using it |
Reported messages can include:
- “This application failed to start because crystalinfostorelib.dll was not found.”
- “The file crystalinfostorelib.dll is missing or corrupted.”
- “A required component is missing: crystalinfostorelib.dll. Please install the application again.”
- “Error loading crystalinfostorelib.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The program can’t start because crystalinfostorelib.dll is missing from your computer.”
The last message does not always mean the named file is absent. Windows can display “the specified module could not be found” when a dependency required by that DLL is missing.
Fix 1: Identify the application that is calling the DLL
Do this before downloading or reinstalling anything. The correct repair depends on which program installed the assembly.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Check the full error message
Note the following details from the dialog:
- The application name
- The executable filename
- The folder shown in the message
- Whether the error appears at startup or only when opening a report
- Whether the wording says “missing,” “not found,” “corrupted,” or “specified module”
If the dialog identifies an executable, search for that program in Windows.
Check Event Viewer
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
eventvwr.msc. - Press Enter.
- Expand Windows Logs.
- Select Application.
- Select Filter Current Log in the right-hand pane.
- Under Event sources, select application error sources if available.
- Look for an event at the time the program failed.
- Open the event and record the Faulting application name and Faulting module name.
The faulting application is usually more useful than the DLL name. It tells you which program needs repair.
Check Reliability Monitor
- Press the Windows key.
- Type
reliability. - Open View reliability history.
- Select the red failure marker for the time of the error.
- Expand the application failure details.
- Record the affected program and its installation path.
Search installed applications
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for the program that fails.
- Also look for entries containing Crystal Reports, Crystal Enterprise, BusinessObjects, or a vendor-specific reporting component.
Do not assume that an entry named Crystal Reports is the parent application. Many business programs include Crystal components without displaying Crystal in their own name.
Inspect a copy that already exists
If you find crystalinfostorelib.dll on the computer:
- Right-click the file.
- Select Properties.
- Open the General tab and record its full location.
- Open Details and note any available version or product information.
- Open Digital Signatures, if present.
- Select a signature and choose Details.
- Check whether Windows reports that the signature is valid.
A legitimate copy may be beside the application executable or inside a .NET assembly location. Historical installations also placed the related assembly in the Global Assembly Cache. A copy in a random download folder, temporary folder, or unrelated startup directory deserves extra scrutiny.
Fix 2: Repair the parent application
This is the safest and most likely solution.
Use the Windows repair option
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the application that produces the error.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
Some traditional desktop programs show Modify, Repair, or Change instead:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select the affected program.
- Choose Change, Repair, or Modify.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows and test the program.
A successful repair should allow the application to start and open the report or module that previously failed. It should also restore the required Crystal components to the application’s expected location.
Reinstall from the original vendor
If Repair is unavailable or does not work:
- Back up the application’s documents, reports, templates, and configuration files.
- Check whether the vendor provides an uninstall utility or repair installer.
- Uninstall the affected application from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the original installer supplied by the application vendor.
- Install any Crystal Reports or Crystal Enterprise components offered by that installer.
- Restart Windows again.
- Launch the application using Run as administrator once.
Use the installer intended for that specific application. A modern Crystal Reports package is not automatically interchangeable with an older embedded runtime. An incompatible runtime can prevent the application from loading or break report functionality.
If the program is maintained by a business software vendor, ask for its supported Crystal runtime or full application installer rather than requesting the DLL by itself.
Fix 3: Match the application’s architecture
Historical records identify crystalinfostorelib.dll as a 32-bit component. That matters when the failing program is 32-bit.
A 64-bit Windows installation can run many 32-bit applications, but it does not convert them into 64-bit programs. A 32-bit application may still require its x86 Crystal runtime and other 32-bit dependencies.
Find the application architecture
There is no universally reliable label in every installer, but these checks help:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select Details.
- Start the affected application.
- Find its process.
- On some Windows builds, a 32-bit process is marked with a suffix such as 32 or 32-bit.
You can also ask the application vendor which runtime architecture it requires.
Repair the correct runtime
- Close the affected application.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for Crystal Reports, Crystal runtime, BusinessObjects, or the application’s runtime entries.
- Repair the existing runtime if Windows provides that option.
- If the runtime is absent, use the application vendor’s installer.
- Choose the x86 or 32-bit package when the application vendor specifies it.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
Do not copy the file into both System32 and SysWOW64. Those folders are not interchangeable storage locations. Windows uses them for different system architectures, and manual copying can create version conflicts or security problems.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may remove or quarantine an old assembly, especially if the application is rarely used or the file has unusual packaging.
Check Windows Security
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review detections from the time the application stopped working.
- Open a detection related to the affected application.
- Check the file path and detection details.
Restore the file only when all of these are true:
- The file came from the application’s official installer
- The path belongs to the affected application
- The detection is clearly a false positive
- The application vendor confirms that the file is required
Otherwise, leave the item quarantined and reinstall the application from its official source. Do not disable antivirus protection to install a DLL downloaded from an untrusted archive.

- Run a Windows Security scan.
- Start the application.
- Confirm that the file is recreated in the application’s expected location.
- If it is immediately quarantined again, contact the application vendor and security software vendor.
Fix 5: Reinstall a missing prerequisite
A Crystal assembly can load other components. If the error says “the specified module could not be found,” the missing item may be a dependency rather than crystalinfostorelib.dll.
Start with the application’s own installer because it knows which prerequisites are required. Do not install random runtime packages based only on a generic DLL error.
If the application vendor specifies a Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable:
- Confirm whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Obtain the redistributable from Microsoft’s official documentation.
- Install the architecture required by the application.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application again.
Older Visual C++ runtimes can remain installed alongside newer ones. Do not remove existing versions simply because a newer redistributable is present.

If the application depends on an old .NET Framework feature:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Optional features.
- Choose More Windows features.
- Review the available .NET Framework entries.
- Enable only the feature required by the application vendor.
- Select OK and allow Windows to install it.
- Restart the computer and test the application.
On some systems, the same dialog is available by pressing Windows key + R, entering optionalfeatures, and pressing Enter.

Do not enable every legacy feature as a general experiment. Old applications can require a particular .NET or database component, and the vendor’s documentation is the reliable way to identify it.
Fix 6: Use the application vendor’s driver or database repair path
Some Crystal-based applications connect to databases, printers, scanners, or document systems. A driver problem can appear alongside a missing assembly, but drivers do not normally recreate crystalinfostorelib.dll.
Use Device Manager only when the error also involves hardware or a device connection:
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Printers, Imaging devices, Display adapters, or Network adapters.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Properties.
- Review the Device status on the General tab.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Use Update Driver only with a driver supplied by Windows or the device manufacturer.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
For a database-driven program, contact the software vendor about its database client, ODBC driver, or connection package. Installing an unrelated driver will not repair the Crystal assembly.
If manually finding the correct driver versions is the part slowing you down, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers; its free scan shows what it finds, while driver installation is handled by the full version. Reinstalling the affected application remains the definitive fix when crystalinfostorelib.dll itself is missing.
Fix 7: Run DISM and SFC only for broader Windows corruption
SFC and DISM repair protected Windows components. They do not normally recreate a third-party Crystal Reports assembly.
Use them when other Windows features are also failing, such as Settings, Windows Update, built-in utilities, or system services.
Run DISM first
- Open the Start menu.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to complete.
- Leave the elevated Command Prompt open.
Run System File Checker
After DISM finishes, run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application again.
If SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupted files, test Windows and the application after the restart. If it reports that no integrity violations were found, focus on the parent application rather than repeating the command.
The manual process can involve repeating repairs without knowing which component changed. Outbyte PC Repair can scan and show what it identifies, while repair is handled by the full version; it is optional, and it does not replace reinstalling the specific application that owns this DLL.
Do not download the DLL separately
Random DLL download sites are a poor repair path for this file. A downloaded copy can contain malware, the wrong historical version, the wrong architecture, or incomplete dependencies. Even a clean copy may not match the application’s expected Crystal runtime.
Manual copying also hides the real cause:
- The parent application may be partially uninstalled
- The runtime may be the wrong version
- A dependent module may be missing
- Antivirus software may have quarantined the file
- The application may require a 32-bit component
- The old application may no longer be compatible with the current Windows installation
Use the original application vendor’s installer, installation media, repair package, or supported runtime documentation. For Microsoft components, use Microsoft’s official downloads and support documentation.
Why regsvr32 usually does not help
regsvr32 is not a universal DLL repair command. It is intended for DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer.
crystalinfostorelib.dll is associated with an imported .NET type-library assembly. That does not establish that it is a self-registering native COM DLL.
Do not run this command as a routine fix:
regsvr32 crystalinfostorelib.dll
If the command reports that DllRegisterServer was not found, registration is not applicable. If the application vendor explicitly says the file is a native COM component and provides the correct registration instructions, follow those instructions, including the correct 32-bit or 64-bit regsvr32 utility. Otherwise, repair the application instead.

If reinstalling still does not work
Collect the information below before contacting the application vendor:
- Complete error text
- Name of the executable that fails
- Full path of that executable
- Windows version and system architecture
- Application version
- Whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit
- Location of any existing
crystalinfostorelib.dll - File Properties details and signature status
- Event Viewer or Reliability Monitor details
- Whether antivirus quarantined the file
- Crystal Reports or Crystal runtime entries shown in Installed apps
- Whether the problem affects one program or several
An old Crystal Enterprise-era application may depend on legacy .NET, COM, database, or 32-bit components that are no longer included in a modern installation. Ask the vendor whether it supports the current Windows version and whether it has a newer build or a documented legacy runtime package.
If the failure began immediately after a known software change and a suitable restore point exists, System Restore may be considered:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select a restore point from before the failure.
- Review the affected programs.
- Start the restore only if the point is appropriate.
System Restore is not a substitute for the application vendor’s installer and may not restore application data or external runtime packages.

Is crystalinfostorelib.dll part of Windows?
No evidence identifies it as a Windows inbox component. It is associated with third-party Crystal Reports and Crystal Enterprise software.
Which program installed it?
The filename alone cannot identify the exact program. It may come from older Crystal software or from a business application that embedded Crystal Reports. Use the error dialog, Event Viewer, Reliability Monitor, and Installed apps to identify the parent program.
Should I copy it into System32?
No. Do not copy an unknown DLL into System32, SysWOW64, or an unrelated application folder. The correct location and architecture are determined by the application installer.
Is the 56-KB version the correct one?
Not necessarily. That is historical metadata from a public file record, not a universal replacement specification. Another historical record identifies a different assembly version in the .NET Global Assembly Cache.
Does a 64-bit Crystal runtime fix a 32-bit application?
Not automatically. A 32-bit application may require the x86 Crystal runtime and compatible dependencies. Install the architecture specified by the application vendor.
Can SFC restore this file?
Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows files, while crystalinfostorelib.dll is a third-party application component. Run SFC and DISM only when broader Windows corruption is also suspected.
What if the file exists but Windows still says it is missing?
The message may refer to a missing dependency. Repair the complete application, verify its architecture, and check the application’s required prerequisites.
Is the file malware?
The filename is associated with a legitimate historical Crystal assembly, but location and origin matter. A copy in a random temporary or download directory should be verified before use. Scan it and reinstall the parent application from its official source if necessary.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

What is the safest fix?
Identify the program that reports the error, then repair or reinstall that program using its original vendor installer. Install only the matching Crystal runtime and prerequisites specified for that application.
